  Having her words turned on her stung, but she didn’t relent. However, the longer she watched the fire and heard the gunshots, the more hopelessness sank in. She felt the tension in everyone in the vehicle. They needed to get going; otherwise, no one would make it to the other side.

  “Mom,” Trinity said.

  “I know, I’m waiting,” Naomi explained.

  “He might not come, Mom,” Trinity said meekly.

  Mouth agape, Naomi turned back to her daughter. Out of everything that happened during this long day, nothing hurt worse than that. Her own daughter thinking that her father was gone. Naomi was alone with a car full of nearly all strangers. She was unsure how much more she could handle.

  “Look!” Becca pointed.

  A hand rose from the bank where the leafless trees jutted from the earth. Another hand followed. Then Calvin pulled himself into view.

  Exhausted, he shambled to the Rover.

  Naomi raced out of the vehicle and slung her arm around his shoulder.

  Face broken, bruised, and crusted with drying blood, Calvin managed to smile.

  They got into the vehicle where Calvin collapsed in the front seat. Naomi, not one for driving, took the wheel and aimed the vehicle away from the city of Philadelphia.

  She drove into the dark snowy night as the fire of civilization flickered out of view.
