The people of Ravenford came out in droves to see them. It turned into an impromptu parade of sorts. The townsfolk cheered as Lloyd flew overhead and appeared in awe of the Boulder. The word ‘Heroes’ kept springing up amongst the crowd. The throng grew as they marched along, following the small company up the hill to Ravenford keep. The entire entourage finally drew to a halt at the front gate. They were greeted by the guard Francis and Lieutenant Relkin.

Francis wore a wide grin. “Well, well, look who it is.”

Relkin eyed the golem with curiosity. “Back victorious, I see?”

Aksel leaned forward in his saddle and spoke softly to the duo, his tone grim, “We need to see the baron at once. It’s urgent.”

Both men turned immediately serious. Francis nodded. “Right then. I’ll notify the captain at once.” He spun around and disappeared through the open gate. At the same time, Relkin motioned to a group of guards just inside the courtyard, then spoke to the companions, “You can leave your mounts and wagon here if you like. We’ll bring them inside for you.”

Aksel gave Relkin a quick nod. “Thanks.”

The small company dismounted, even Seth finally appearing from inside the wagon. The halfling jumped down, patted the Boulder affectionately on the leg, and strode forward to join the others. The group all gathered together in front of the lieutenant.

Relkin addressed Martan, “And just where did they find you, friend?”

An ironic smile crossed the archer’s face. “In the Dead Forest. These heroes of your town more or less saved my life.”

The townsfolk nearest to them picked up on the archer’s statement. A low chant ensued. “Heroes. Heroes. Heroes of Ravenford.”

The companions gazed around at the throng in amazement.

“Well, that just happened,” Seth said in a wry tone.

They waved briefly to the townsfolk, then Aksel addressed Lieutenant Relkin once more, “Gratifying as this may be, we still have that urgent business.”

  Relkin nodded. “Right. This way.”

He led the Heroes of Ravenford through the gate and into the courtyard beyond.
