Before Jacob and I grew close, I would have thought the scene before me would have been completely ridiculous. Instead it felt like a normal Saturday morning. Around the kitchen table sat Jacob and to his sides were Spike, Drags and Eggs. Spike refused to look at me as he put his sandwich together. "Is everyone settled?" I asked.

"They are excited. Let's get down there and see if the ritual is prepared." Jacob grinned as he moved to the basement door.
The world bloomed into long surreal moments. I glanced to the windows and could see the wind picking up. Trees swayed and dark clouds rolled in. I wondered about what we were about to do. I knew Jacob was into some dark art magic but that didn't bother me like I thought it should. And here I was ready to bring another magical animal into our world so our strange family could become just a little more stranger. I thought about the unicorn from my dream. I thought how nice it would be to have another female around to talk with and get to know. If this was a crazy train then I never wanted to get off. Some people spend their entire lives trying to find where they belong. I just happened to be lucky enough to find my place in this crazy mixed up world.
In the basement, we saw that Spike and Eggs were hard at work. In the middle of the room stood a sturdy wooden table with a smaller table on it. Runes and designs were carved into the thick wood as wires splayed out over the table, down the legs, up the wall and out the basement window. Behind the table stood the door to Jacob's secret room. I had glimpsed it once. It breathed and glowed with an alter in the middle and books lining the walls. As far as I knew, only Jacob and Spike had ever been in there.
I placed the unicorn on the smaller table. Jacob went to work as the guys watched. He quickly performed minor surgery on the stuffed unicorn. Jacob came over to me and kissed my forehead. "Okay, since she is your creation, you will have to speak the words and complete the ritual."

"She will need a piece of your spirit if she is to be female. If any of us do it, she will be male."
I looked into his eyes. "Okay. What do I have to do?"
Jacob guided me over to in between the big table and the secret room. He opened the door and a cool gust of wind flowed over my spirit. Energy crackled in the air and shadows waved in the corners of the mysterious chamber. The alter inside glowed a sickly green glow as it beckoned me to get closer.
Jacob touched my shoulders and turned me around so I faced the unicorn and my back was to the strange alter. "Best not to look at it for too long. The altar connects to a well of dark magic. You are going to channel it into our new family member."
Spike put a book on the table right in front of the unicorn and opened it. "Don't worry Julie. We will be right here. Speak the words when you're ready."
My body trembled. I was really going to do this, animate a stuffed animal for our growing family. I took a few deep breaths and picked up the book. Outside the wind picked up and darkness floated in. A tendril reached out and touched my back seductively. It coiled up my spine and caressed my neck like a long lost lover. I began speaking the words and the tendril seemed to push into my body, grazing my heart. My eyes widened but I continued speaking each and every word to the spell. My men watched me as energy arced in the room. A sense of pride washed over Jacob's face as he gazed at me doing the very dark magic that created Spike.
Words hung in the air as my voice grew louder and more commanding. I was nearly done and my heart thudded in my chest. I said the final word and slammed the book shut. Lightning struck the house with a "BOOM!". Energy arced as it snaked around the wires and cables. Spike and Eggs gave each other a high five when the energy shot into the table. The unicorn vibrated, energy lashing and spilling into it. The tendril at my back flowed through me, taking a piece and slamming it into the trembling stuffed animal. I let out a wild screech and the world turned black.
My breathing was slow and steady. A shaft of light stabbed into the darkness. I blinked as I saw Jacob point the flash light my way. In the dark, stuffed animals moved to me, paws touching in concern.
"Are you okay?" Jacob said bending down.
"Yea. Can we turn on the lights?" I asked as I slowly stood up.
"That was a big hit. I think the power is out in the whole neighborhood." Jacob said.
"Did it work?" I could sense a part of me moving a short distance away.
Jacob shined light on the table. A plush hoof stamped at the wood. Big eyes looked back at me and a sparkling horn seemed to almost glow in the light. The stuffed unicorn jumped off the table and ran to me. My arms went wide and she jumped right in them. The unicorn snuggled into me, nibbling at my neck.
"What's her name?" Drags said as he jumped and flapped his little wings.
"Her name is Yuki." I said looking into her adorable eyes.
"I like that name." Yuki said with a shake of her head.
I put Yuki down and she hopped around like a horse at play. Even in the dim light, I could see smiles on everyone's face as Yuki bounced. Jacob handed the flashlight to Eggs and moved to the fuse box. He opened the latch and pulled the switches. The house remained dark.
"Well it looks like the power is really out." Jacob said closing the fuse box.
Spike jumped on the table. "That means we are having a black out party!" The teddy bear screamed and cart wheeled.
Yuki jumped up onto the table and hopped around as Spike pretended to play air guitar. I giggled as Eggs and Drags climbed up and joined them. Soon all four stuffed animals were dancing and flipping like it was the end of the world. Jacob walked over to me and put his arm around my waist.
