Baxter meets me at the warehouse where we’re having the show. I’m so nervous my hands are sweating. He seems cool as a cucumber, and for some reason it’s pissing me off.
There’s an issue with one of the dresses, which shouldn’t surprise me. I have to pull out a needle and thread to fix the neckline. Once I’m finished, the music starts that I’m supposed to walk out to. This is the most hectic day I’ve ever experienced. I want to cry, but I pull myself together and step out onto the runway, welcoming the crowd to my show. More people have shown up earlier than I’d expected. It’s a full house though the headline designer isn’t on yet.
I’m shaking as my first model comes out. Then the models keep coming and I’m starting to feel better as the crowd claps and exclaims their delight. I feel like I’ve created something special.
Baxter meets me in the dressing room after the show. It’s crowded because the headliner has her models waiting. He pulls me to a quiet corner then drops to one knee. Shock pulses through me. I’d thought we would eventually get engaged, but this is a true surprise.
“Heather, when I called you, I didn’t realize how important that call would be. You’ve changed me for the better. I’m happy and I want you with me forever. Please be my wife.”
People are clapping around us, but I only have eyes for Baxter. He’s my rock, my heart, my everything. I nod as I pull him up. His smile is wide, his eyes bright as he slides a pink diamond onto my ring finger. It’s huge and not at all what I thought I’d like, but I love it. The ring is unique and traditional at the same time. It exemplifies our relationship, the way we’ve adjusted and made our love our own.
Baxter’s lips brush over mine and I lean in, holding tight onto him as he laughs with relief. “Is that a yes?”
“Oh yes, Baxter. I say yes a thousand times.”
And I would say yes to him more than a thousand times. He’s my one and only, and I intend to make sure he knows how I feel. No doubt, this will go down in the books as one of the best days of my life. I’d had an amazing show, and I have an amazing man. My life couldn’t get any better because I took a chance on Jason Delany Baxter-Scott the fifth, and I didn’t regret it for one minute.
