“I can’t thank you enough. Debs will be over the moon to have our daughter back home. Thank you for believing in us, eventually.”

Cooper winced. “Ouch! I guess I asked for that. I’ll be in touch soon.”

Martin showed them to the door and shook their hands. He walked back into the lounge, swept Logan up into his arms and spun around on the spot. “Hey, little man, your big sister will be coming home soon.”

He sat on the sofa and hugged his son as the years of frustration eased from his shoulders.

  He sat there and wept.

  Epilogue

Debs had shelled out on new outfits for all of them. She bought a pretty summer dress for the occasion. Martin was dressed in a crisp navy business suit, and Logan was sporting a cute little sailor suit she’d picked up as a bargain from one of the shops in town. Everyone keen to make a good impression as today was the day Adele was coming home. Nothing could spoil this day for them.

Social Services had warned them that the transition for Adele wouldn’t be easy and that patience would be the order of the day in the months ahead. People were free to offer their advice, but none of that mattered to either Debs or Martin. Debs knew that love would conquer all.

They met Adele at the arranged location: the local park. Their little girl found it hard to make eye contact with them. She kept her head low, displaying shyness and the lost soul she had become. Logan turned out to be the ice-breaker they needed to get her to open up and accept Debs and Martin as her parents again.

Adele gelled with her baby brother immediately, and Logan’s endless tears seemed to dry up and were replaced by laughter and cute chuckles the day she walked back into their lives.

Watching the children play in their back garden, the day after Adele’s arrival, Debs slipped her hand into Martin’s and smiled up at him. “I can’t believe our family has been reunited. She’s slotted back in so well, hasn’t she?”

“She has. One day, in the near future, let’s hope she trusts us enough to open up and tell us what her life has been like the past five years.”

Debs watched her precious daughter and shook her head. “I don’t think I want to know. Anyway, what did your mum say when you rang her?”

“I let her have it, didn’t hold back either. If it hadn’t been for her big mouth, none of this would have happened.”

“Oh no, that’s a shame, Martin. I don’t suppose she meant anything by telling Angela about you. Mothers tend to speak proudly about their children, I’m sure her intentions were good. Maybe you’re being a little hard on her.”

“I’m not. You’re just too forgiving. We’re lucky Adele is back with us. If you hadn’t seen her at the school gates a few weeks ago, we’d be none the wiser and still missing our beautiful daughter. Who knows when our nightmare might have ended?”

Her emotions soared. She was relieved everything had finally fallen into place and that they could finally get their lives back. “I know. We have to be thankful that someone was looking down on us.”

He nodded and hugged her. “She’s back now and I know neither one of us is about to let her out of our sight in the future, neither of them, right?”

“Definitely. I don’t think I could ever go through dealing with that nightmare all over again. I love you Martin Jenkins, thank you for having always been by my side throughout this horrendous ordeal.”

“I love you, too. Hey, why don’t we top things off by renewing our vows? I’m sure someone we know will be eager to be a flower girl.”

Debs smiled up at him. “That, dear husband, is the best idea you’ve ever had. I’d love to.”
