I had no idea how long it lasted. I felt her nipples straining against her dress and rubbing against my chest.

Finally, we separated, out of breath, I was on fire for her and wanted to let my mouth explore the rest of her.

But maybe the bank teller was right, maybe this was all new to her. That presented a lot of fun possibilities I could explore with her.

I had her for the day tomorrow if I didn’t scare her off tonight.

“Oh my God. You’re a really good kisser. I shouldn’t have probably come down here at night.”

  “You’re all grown up right?”

“Yes, it’s just…” She didn’t finish the sentence. She seemed to be reconsidering the wisdom of spending more time with me.

“What time do you want to leave in the morning?”

  “A little before lunch?”

“Fine.” And I plunged in again. I kissed her lips, and she melted into me. I trailed my mouth down to her neck and to the top of her breast. I used my teeth to trap one of her nipples through the fabric of her dress. She moaned, and it was the most delicious little sound. She may not be experienced, but she was responding to my touch more than any woman I’d been with.

She wanted more. And I would give it to her. I slid one side of her bra strap down and watched her tremble. She was scared it was clear. But curious. I lifted her breast out of the cup and sucked in her nipple. This time, no fabric to protect it. I heard her gasp.

I wanted her to want more. I wanted her to get the idea of what we could be like together. I wanted her to be begging when the time was right.

I nibbled gently and palmed her other breast, still hidden in her dress. It took everything I could not to rip it open all the way. To take her right then. To pull up her skirt and slide her panties off. To lift her legs apart. But I stopped. I wanted to break down her barriers, and that mean letting her think about this. It meant letting her fantasize about how it would feel to have me inside her. I knew I would be thinking about it all night.

I slowly slid her bra back into place. She opened her eyes. I kissed her again.

“What was that,” She asked. “I’m sorry I just don’t have much uh, experience.”

  “It’s okay. I do.”

  “I better go.”

“See you tomorrow Kara.” And I moved aside as she sprinted topside and out of the boat.

I could have pounded nails with my cock at that point but hey. Tomorrow wasn’t that far away.

  Kara

I wanted him to keep going but was also totally out of my league. This I knew. When Stone put my bra strap back up, I was massively disappointed, and I also smart enough to know it was time to go.

I didn’t have a clue on how to handle someone like him. Hell, I didn’t have a clue on how to handle college guys in my biology lab. Stone was beyond that. I did know I wanted to see him again. At the same time, my face was red hot wondering how I would be able to look him in the eye.

I’d kissed him twice now and this time, oh, the sensations his mouth made me feel.

I went up to my room after my second Stone make out session and realized I could see the boat from my window. I had a light on in my room. Was he looking up at me?

Something in me hoped so. I wanted him to see me. But I turned off my light. I did not want the entire bar to see me. I did imagine Stone was still watching as I dropped my dress to the floor and climbed into bed.

Playing with Stone would be a very bad idea. But I was tired of being the good girl.

If I was really descended from pirates, it was time for me to do a little swashbuckling.

Daddy always kept me away from boys. I spent all my time at school or helping him research. There was never any time for dating. And in college, there was never one man that ever held my interest. And so here I was, 21, and I’d never had sex.

One of those brief boyfriends spread it around that I was frigid after I wouldn’t have sex with him and it was embarrassing as hell. My Dad heard the rumor and told me to hold on to my purity, Kevin heard it too. The island could be like high school all over again.

I suppose it made me a freak. It made me more interesting to Kevin Potter too. He was always telling me he was going to show me this or that. He was always using that word pure. I hated it.

When Stone touched me, for the first time in my life I wanted him to keep going. I wanted him to show me more. I wasn’t pure. I just hadn’t done it yet. I hadn’t been interested. That had changed. I wanted Stone.

I fell asleep thinking about his lips on me. Everywhere.

  Chapter Six

  Stone

I started the next day with the Estelle’s advice and headed to the Island Togs store. I didn’t want to weigh myself down too much with crap, but a pair of shorts wouldn’t hurt if I was going to be on the boat and then Kara’s beach. I got an early start since she’d wanted to head out before lunch.

I followed Estelle’s directions and wound up in the Island Togs store. And can only say I felt as out of place as if I’d stepped into a knitting circle.

And something was wrong. Very wrong in this tourist shop.

There he was. Butchie and doing the exact same shit as I’d seen him do with Estelle and Frank.

This time, he was beating the piss out of an old man.

A man I recognized. The older man wore a Hawaiian shirt, but his arms were covered in tats.

It was Slim, the guy from the rest stop. Apparently, he was the owner of Island Togs. He looked a lot different, his biker gear was replaced with the island togs, but it was him. And Butchie was getting the best of him.

This guy liked picking on old people it appeared. I knew I was supposed to be laying low. But I couldn’t stand by and watch this guy continue to terrorize these nice people.

“Hey. Asshole.” I said, and Butchie stopped, mid-punch, to turn and look at me.

“Beating up old people is pretty fucking cowardly.” Slim’s eyes darted from me to Butchie.

“Stay out of it. It’s okay. I owe,” Slim said.

“Fuck that.” And I hauled off and punched Butchie in the face like he deserved. He was going to deal with me and get the beating he deserved. Take that you piece of shit.

He came at me and tried to tackle me but I shook him to the side, and he tumbled into a rack of Island Togs.

I charged forward. I didn’t want to give him a moment to consider his options. He decided to go for my legs and take me down. It was a bad move.

I bent over and helped him stand up and then landed another punch that split his nose open.

“Stop, you better stop,” Slim called out. I didn’t want to mess up the man’s store. I just wanted to mess up Butchie’s ugly face. But I held back the next punch only because Slim asked.

“Next time I see you terrorizing someone in this town I won’t be stopping. Get the fuck out of here.”

Butchie wiped his nose with the back of his sleeve.

“I don’t know who the fuck you are, but this was a dumb move.” Butchie started to make his way to the door.

“I said get the fuck out of here,” I was tired of seeing this guy beat up on old people.

“You do not know who you’re messing with.” He opened the door, and the glass shattered all over the front of the shop. What a complete asshole.

  “Slim, are you okay?”

“I’m okay, I am.” He held on to his checkout counter for support.

“You don’t look okay. You need to call the cops on him.”

  “He is the cops.”

  “What, I think he’s a two-bit loan shark.”

“No, he works for someone else. He’s just the muscle. And his dad is the county sheriff. Nobody ever stops Butchie from being Butchie.”

  “Shit.”

“Yeah, shit. Look. I appreciate your help.”

“I been here two days. This is the second time I’ve seen that guy push someone around.”

“Shit, what the hell is he up to?” Slim said more to himself
than to me.

“I don’t know but it seems like everyone in your charming little town is on his list.”

“Yeah, well, don’t worry about me. I’m tough and really it’s not your concern. You’re here to rest, vacation, enjoy the beach! Let’s get you some togs!” Slim was trying to change the subject.

  “Everyone’s afraid of him.”

“Forget what you heard. You’re on vacation right? Not a crusade now let’s head over to the big and tall.”

“You sure we shouldn’t get you to a hospital.”

“No, I’m fine. I’m fine. Let’s get you some togs,” he repeated.

  “Seriously?”

  “Seriously.”

I stopped pushing. A man didn’t want to be babied.

Slim was rattled, and I could see a bruise swelling upon his cheek. What the hell was going on in this town? It seemed like everywhere I went this Butchie character was shaking someone down.

I had met three decent business owners who were all scared shitless of Butchie and or the bank.

Slim packed me up with shorts and other beach shit. I put $500 dollars down on the counter.

  “What’s this for?”

  “The window.”

“Butchie did that not you. Your best bet is to enjoy your vacation and stay out of the mess we’re all in.”

“How many of you are in this mess?”

“I’d say most of us. It’s not our town anymore.” Slim looked at the broken glass of the front door.

“It seems like a lot of bullshit. And don’t argue about the money.”

“It is bullshit. And I can’t accept it.”

I didn’t pick the money back up. “That glass may not have broken if it wasn’t for me throwing Butchie out.”

I felt like I did owe Slim. He didn’t want to take the money but too bad. I was helping out dammit.

I left the shop wondering how extensive Butchie’s bullying was. And fearing Gold Cross, Florida was a town in major trouble.

I looked up and the blue sky of yesterday had been replaced with some gray clouds rolling in. My boat ride with Kara might be bumpier than she planned.

  Kara

I tried not to let my lust over Stone Calder overwhelm me. I had a job to do. Two jobs actually.

I’d submitted the report of my find to the Fish and Wildlife and hoped I’d made a good i.d.

If the hawk was the species, I’d thought it would be important. Maybe we could help bring their numbers back. It was the first time I felt my work could really make a difference. I may be a brand new biologist, but it felt like a big moment. Well, if the labs came back and I had spotted the right bird.

There was nothing more I could do now on it, though, it would be up to the lab to analyze my data and the samples and confirm what I found.

It was time to turn my attention to my other search. I had Daddy’s map with me and a way to get to the island. Sure there was a biker sized obstacle, but I’d deal with one disaster at a time. What else could I do?

I didn’t want Jason to know I had the map or the desire to try to use it. I was going to spend the day out on Ross Island, and I wasn’t going to tell him. I had to be sure Stone stayed more or less in the dark too.

Stone. I flashed again to his rough hand on my dress last night and got distracted.

Shit. I needed to plan not fantasize about Stone Calder. I mentally went through the mistakes my Dad made and was excited to try something new. I hoped my deductions and theories were right.

My dad had always centered his searching on the beachhead. He’d read the legends of the island and the history and had spent hours combing the shore.

My search was going to be different.

I packed up my supplies and head out to Stone’s boat. I called his name, but he wasn’t there. Well, the boat was, that was the important thing. Though I felt a pang of disappointment that Stone wasn’t there to greet me. A shirtless Stone had been living in my fantasies all night.

Maybe he’d gone to check on his bike? I hoped he hadn’t decided I was more trouble than I was worth or my kiss was so clumsy that… whatever that was not what today was about!

The least I could do was put gas in his tank. So I busied myself doing that from the pump at Pontiac’s Pier.

“Good Morning Beautiful.” He’d snuck up behind me while I was pumping gas and kissed my cheek.

Kevin Potter. He was getting more and more comfortable touching me. I wondered what Daddy would have done if he would have known how closely he’d tied me to this creep.

  “Morning Kevin.”

“Did you hear about the commotion over at the Island Togs Shop?”

“No,” Slim Kasmeyer owned it, and he was good friends with the Pontiacs.

“Yeah, some asshole biker mugged Butchie, as he was shopping. A real jerk.”

  “Butchie?”

“Yep, he’s okay, though. Don’t worry,” like I worried about that asshole.

I did not share with Kevin that I’d seen Butchie the day before. It didn’t take much to figure he was probably pushing Slim like he’d pushed Estelle and Frank.

  “How’s Slim?”

“Fine, I guess. So I came by to tell you that I’ve purchased you a dress for the Save the Manatee event.”

“The event. Oh yeah, that’s this weekend.” I was blocking it out of my mind.

“I plan to make a generous donation, but I thought you might need help on the dress front, you know, you’re supposed to be in formal wear, and I know you can’t afford it.”

“I don’t need you to buy me a dress.” I was so stupid for agreeing to go to this function with Kevin. But it kept him happy. It kept him thinking I might not hate him. The whole idea made me feel dirty. But island treasure wasn’t my only play. I had to be smart. I had to be calculating. I had to be nice to Kevin. He held the fate of my island in his bank vault.

“I like buying you outfits. I plan to buy you more. I can’t wait to see you in it.” I tried to smile at Kevin, but my lips felt dry and stuck on my teeth.

My bosses were hoping to raise big money at the Save the Manatee event. Everyone in the office was supposed to sell tickets. Kevin bought tickets and then said he’d write a big donation check too. But only if I would go to the event with him. He wanted to show everyone I was his date.

I’d been putting it out of my mind. When I did think about it, I cringed at him touching me. And now he wanted to put me in clothes he selected. He leaned in close to me and slid his hand into the top of my shorts. I wanted to bolt away. Where was he going? I was mortified. I felt myself clench as his fingertips touched the top of my ass. God, no, inside I was recoiling.

“I’ll have it delivered this week. And Kara, you’ll want to let me zip it up. It’s really hard to do by yourself.” He licked his lips and scraped his nails against my skin. I stepped back. I wanted my ass out of his range.

“Great. Thanks.” And then Kevin leaned in and tried to close the gap of space I struggled to put between us. H was going to try to kiss me. I leaned back and put out my hand for a fist bump or high five or anything but having him kiss me again. Once on the cheek was enough for today thank you. For a lifetime actually. He was annoyed that I dodged him. I always dodged him.

“Careful out on the water today Kara. Looks like rain.”

“Bye.” Kevin walked away from me. Seeing him walk away had the effect of releasing the tension in my shoulders. I always felt like I survived encounters with him. Until the next one.

At that moment, of course, Stone walked up. The two men had met at the bank.

“You again, Stone? What are you doing here?” Kevin was instantly suspicious.

“Well, this is my boat. I’m taking Kara out today.” Stone smiled and walked passed Kevin, who now looked furious.

“Counting species all day,” I smiled at Kevin and acted like I didn’t notice his anger. He turned and walked off. I was going to hear about this I’m sure but mercifully not now.

  “He
s very into you,” Stone said, and there was anger in his eyes too. Jesus. I was walking through one minefield after another. So I did what I always did when I got nervous. Talked.

“Uh, Kevin? Yeah, he’s part octopus. Unfortunately, he’s also the richest man on the island. If I want money for some of my causes I have to be nice. I also owe him. Big.”

  “What?”

“He owns the mortgages on Ross Island, he owns the debt to Pontiacs, to Ross’s shop. Just everywhere. Plus he’s a major donor to local charities. Kevin’s money helps a lot of people.”

“Helps? That’s debatable. So why is that Butchie character the one I keep seeing. What’s his story?”

“Well, like Pontiacs, a lot of people went to Butchie, or rather the loan shark Butchie works for, to stave off Kevin and the bank. Kevin recommended it I heard. He just wanted to get paid.”

“Did you go to a loan shark too?”

“No, I’m about to lose the island because of it.”

“That sucks. But good. I’d have to kill Butchie if he touched you.”

“I heard you almost did earlier. That’s really dangerous Stone, messing up Butchie. Though I’m glad you did. After the way, he destroyed Frank’s kitchen.” I’d said too much, as usual, so I changed the subject.

“Nice shorts.” Stone had shorts and army boots on. It wasn’t exactly beach wear, but it was a start.

He held up a few bags of food.

“I was in town for Togs and food.”

We stepped on the boat, and Stone eased it away from the pier.

  “And ass kicking.”

  “And ass kicking,” Stone said.

“That could come back to bite you in the ass.”

We were on the boat and out of nowhere Stone scooped me into his arm and kissed me hard on the mouth, it was rough, it threw me off balance. He fired up my desire for him and then stopped as soon as he started.

I swallowed hard, and he let me go. I didn’t know if I wished Kevin Potter saw it. He’d only left a second ago. I didn’t know if I wanted him to see me with Stone or if that would make things worse.
