A Father for Danny

“All arranged for tomorrow afternoon.”
“Thanks, Skye.”
“No problem. He’s a great kid. I really like him.”
Sam looked across to the solarium again. “Me, too.”
“Do you think Emily knew how things were going to work out?”
Sam teared up. “Yes, I do. There was something in her eyes when she realized the three of us were there together.”
“She was an awesome woman.”
“And a good mother.”
“Yeah.” Skye looked toward the solarium. “Like ours. I’ll finish the pots and pans. You go get changed.”
“Are you sure? You’ve done most of the cleaning up.”
“Of course I’m sure. Do what I say. I am your big sister.”
“And I love you for it.”
Skye bent her head, rolling up the sleeves of her sweatshirt. When she looked up, her eyes were damp. “Sam, I give thanks every single day for what you did for me.”
Sam bit her lip. “I do, too, Skye, for having luck on my side.”
Skye shook her head. “It wasn’t luck, Sam. You were amazing.” After a long moment, she said, “Okay, pots and pans and then a nice run around the neighborhood. Sound good?”
“Very good.” Sam started to leave, but remembered something. “How has it been for you, Skye? At work?”
Skye sighed. “Things are fine now. Lots of questions about everything.” She flashed a sheepish grin. “I’ve endured a lot of ribbing about the abduction, I can tell you that. But I also got a lot of praise for finding the evidence to reopen the case.”
“I’m glad. And…uh…any more news on the romance side of things?”
“I’ve been seeing someone very different from the others. He’s a chef and he loves to cook for me.” She chuckled. “That’s why I’ve taken up running again.”
Sam laughed. “Be with you in five.”
She hurried to her room and was back within the promised time, walking into the kitchen just as Chase was approaching Skye, finishing up the pots at the sink. Sam froze, heart thudding painfully against her ribs.
“Sam?” Chase said.
Skye turned around and before she could utter a word, Chase added, “Oh. Do you know where Sam is, Skye?”
Skye grinned, pointing her index finger at her twin. “Right behind you.”
He turned, his face breaking into the wonderful, heartbreaking smile Sam had come to love so much. “Hi, beautiful.”
Sam rushed into his open arms, caught her sister’s gaze over Chase’s shoulder and winked.
