“We need to know where he stashed Tracy.”

He nodded, his face too low for her to read. “You should call Eric and ask him to send another shifter to track the scent from the garage.”

“Is the wolfsbane permanent?” Her stomach rolled and she swallowed her nausea back. Blain saw the world through scent. Without it… Well, he’d truly be blind.

“No, but we don’t have the time to wait for it to wear off. The effect of the plant only last less than an hour but Todd concentrated it in a powder. So who knows how long it will last?”

She ran her hands over his very muscular shoulders and arms. Unable to resist touching him. “I’ll tell William to make the contact.”

As she called the team and informed them of Blain’s condition, he pulled the meal cart to the bed.

He sat on the edge and prepared a plate.

“William will make the arrangements with Eric.” She sat next to him.

“Eat.” He set said a plate loaded with food in her hands.

“You’ll still stay and help me?” She wanted to make it an order, not a question.

  “On one condition.”

She stared at the meal with no appetite. “What?”

“Once this is over, you’ll let me cook you a meal.” He started in on the rare burgers she’d ordered especially for him. He moaned around a mouthful. “Shifting makes me so hungry.”

She laughed. “That’s it? You want to cook for me?”

He nodded. “Well, you have to eat it.”

She gave him a wary look. “You know how to cook, right?” What an odd request.

“I make a killer mac and cheese with ham and jalapeno bits. I’ll put in extra for you.”

She blinked and stared at the hotel walls. Maybe she was still unconscious on the parking lot and this was a dream. The food, the half naked werewolf next to her, the bed. Three weeks ago, she’d been sitting in her office reading reports. This was better. “I do love spicy food.” He remembered. She set her plate aside.

“You’re not hungry?” He touched her forehead. “I want to take you to the hospital. They can scan your head for a concussion and run blood tests to check if you’ve been infected.”

“I wasn’t bitten.” She set his plate next to hers and climbed onto his lap. “But I’m starved for some shifter.” She pressed her mouth softly against his for a quick kiss then retreated.

Blain sat still, eyes closed, as if savoring the moment.

She ran her fingertips over his thick eyelashes. So unfair that he had the most beautiful eyes she’d ever seen and they didn’t work. If they did, though, he wouldn’t be her Blain. Fierce, independent, thoughtful male who treated her as if she were the most precious thing in the world.

Wow. When had she fallen so hard for him? It had snuck on her until it was too late to escape. She’d been caught.

He groaned and leaned into her touch.

Her wandering fingers, explored his shoulders, collar bone, chest…all so well-defined.

His muscles moved below his skin, flexing as he thrust his hands into her tangled hair, holding her against him. “I need to make one thing clear.” His lips brushed over hers as he spoke. “This isn’t a fling. You’re mine now.”

Tingles ran over the sensitive flesh of her mouth. “Yours?”

No one had claimed her in so long. She’d forgotten what it felt like to belong. No family, no real friends, just work. Not even coworkers, since she was always on the move. Hunting, chasing, capturing her nightmares and locking them away for good. Could there be more to life? Was Blain that promise?

“Yes.” He locked his mouth on hers and slid his tongue along her bottom lip.

She opened to him. Somehow this wolf knew how to slip past all her defenses. He touched things inside her she’d thought dead, like her heart.

Rubbing his tongue against hers, he thrust with slow languid strokes that reminded her of sex. Involuntarily, she rolled her hips. Her pulse throbbed a beat between her thighs and she ached with need. She moaned and surrendered to Blain’s kissing assault.

By the time she pulled up for air, they were on the bed, him on his back and her pressed to his bare chest. Dazed, she gave him a slow blink.

Oh boy, this was going to happen. Cell phones be damned. All she needed was five minutes—she was that ready for him.

“Sonya,” he murmured and his hand went to the towel wrapped around her body. Pressing delicate kisses to her cheeks and jaw, he tugged the cloth loose and let it fall to the floor. His large hands caressed her skin, hesitating over her fractured rib. He frowned as if struggling with a decision. “You’re hurt. Maybe we should—”

She kissed him. That was enough of that train of thought. She wasn’t made of glass. Her healed bones were evidence of that. Finally, she had him right where she needed him. She’d take advantage of this gorgeous shifter over and over all night long.

Blain’s attention moved to her breasts. He cupped them as if weighing and measuring them, kneading them together and apart. His hips moved to hers, his hard cock evident under the towel. She pressed against him, wanting more of his touch. There was something so delicious about this shifter.

His kiss turned hungrier and she moaned as his hands cupped her ass, moving her wet pussy over his hard package. “Sonya,” he whispered in her ear before nuzzling her neck.

Oooh. Her nipples hardened and she clung to him as he licked the tender skin of her neck, then her ears and nibbled her lobe. She lifted her hips and pulled the towel around his waist open, leaving him naked under her.

God, he would feel amazing inside of her. She gripped his thick cock at the base and stroked his length.

Arching his neck back, he groaned. “You’re driving me mad.”

She loved the desperate edge his words held. It made her feel powerful to affect such a dominant creature. She gripped him tighter, stroking him faster, until a bead of pre-cum formed on the tip of his flushed cock. She slid along his body and licked the pearled bead.

He gasped and thrust his hips in reaction. He stared down along his body, his eyes changing to amber once more. “This might not be the best idea.” His voice was rough with emotion…or wolf. “Whatever the EMTs gave me has weakened my control.”

“Really?” She took her time to lick the length of his cock from base the tip. “I didn’t notice.” She trusted him not to hurt her. He needed to trust her not to break.

His lips parted and a feral noise rumbled deep within his chest. She swore his canines lengthened right before her eyes. He tangled his fingers in her hair. “More.”

Who was she not to comply? She wanted more too.

He barely fit in her mouth. So hot and hard. In and out, she sucked on his cock, guided by his hand.

“Like that,” he practically exhaled the words. His abs contracted as he leaned up on an elbow. He closed his eyes and threw his head back. “Oh fuck, that feels so good.”

The pressure between her legs was almost painful. She needed to be touched or fucked, to come. Arching hips, she made contact with his knee and rubbed her aching pussy against it, trying relieve her growing need. She moaned around her mouthful.

In one smooth motion, he sat up and scooped her in his arms. He wrapped her legs around his hips. As she settled against him, arms around his neck, she sank his cock inside her pussy. He cupped her ass and guided her hips as he thrust inside her, slow and deep.

She bit her bottom lip. This pace might kill her out of sheer pleasure. She couldn’t catch her breath. She moaned, the sound traveling from the darkness of her most secret fantasies. Shifter, coworker, hotel room all they needed was a jar of Nutella and some silver cuffs.

His thrust grew faster, harder. He lifted her, moving her in time, up and down his shaft. “Come for me, baby.”

She came. Every stroke pushed against her swollen clit. She dug her nails into his shoulders, mouth open but unable to make a sound. So intense. The pleasure took away her breath.

  She’d thought his pussy-eating sk
ills too much to handle?

He whispered soft words in her ear, but she couldn’t concentrate on what he said. Just the sound of his deep, rough voice. It sounded like mine, mine, mine as he fucked the hell out of her. He growled low his throat and shuddered.

She felt him pulse inside her, his semen hot against her inner flesh. The growling became louder, the thrusting harder. His fingers dug deeper into her hips as he climaxed.

This sent her into another orgasm. She came apart with each thrust of his cock, until she lay against his chest, boneless and weak and moaning. “Oh Blain.” Her brains felt like mush. Thinking seemed impossible.

He planted tiny kisses along her shoulder. “Did I hurt you?”

She giggled. Actually giggled. “Anything but.”

He rolled his hips, moving his cock inside her again, already getting hard.

  Her eyes went wide. “Already?”

He chuckled. “Consider it a bonus when becoming a shifter.” He rolled her and settled between her legs. “Need to rest?”

A huge smile spread across her face. What was inside her chest that felt like bubbles and rainbows? She poked it and called it happy. So this was what it felt like? “I want more.”

“Whatever my mate desires.” He kissed her again, his hunger seemed unsatisfied and need just as strong as when they’d begun.

  Chapter Fifteen

Morning came too soon. Sonya stepped out of the bathroom, fresh from the shower. She searched the floor for her discarded clothes that were scattered around the hotel room. She glanced at Blain, who was still lying in bed, rolled on his side as if watching her.

“You move like you’re anxious.” He rested his head on his hand.

She tossed him an incredulous look. He could tell how she felt by the way she moved? She had plenty to worry about. Crime, murder, being called mate. He couldn’t see her expression though. She sighed. “I’m not accustomed to fucking my coworkers. I’m not sure where we go from here.”

He rolled onto his back with a groan. “I’m not a coworker.”

“What would you call yourself then?” She set her hand on her hip.

“Your mate.” He grinned at the ceiling as she grunted.

  “Blain—”

“You like me. Admit that you like me.”

She hung her head. “I like you.” There, that was honest.

“You more than like me.” His grin grew wider. “Tell me you don’t want to be my mate.”

Her teeth hurt and she eased from grinding them. “No.”

  He rolled. “No what?”

“I’m not playing this game.” She put on her underwear then picked up her pants. Where the fuck was her bra?

“This isn’t a game.” His tone became stone cold serious. “I wasn’t joking when I called you my mate, Sonya. I wish you could hear my truth.”

She dropped his pants and looked under the table. “I can’t hear it though. How can you be so certain? We just met.”

“I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life.” He spoke so quietly. She glanced at him—his head was down, shoulders hunched. “Just keep an open mind about us, okay?”

Her heart flip flopped. He was actually serious. He wanted her. Forever? “Okay.” Her pulse raced and that stupid little happy feeling returned.

  Wow, that was nice.

His head jerked up and he gave the most heart breaking smile. “Okay then.” His phone chimed and grabbed it off the nightstand. “Why do people text me?” He handed the cell to her.

She was dressing and he wished she wouldn’t. They had nowhere to be until a new lead turned up and she needed to heal. His huntress had a restless, damaged soul.

“They forget you can’t see. Take it as a compliment.” She read the message. “It’s from a Tyler. He says Eric will be here in an hour and to meet them at the car detailing garage.”

Blain groaned. Guess he had a reason to dress now. “Tell him I’ll be there.”

“We’ll be there. Partners remember?” She clicked at the screen as she typed a response. “That gives us enough time to check in with the others at the police station.”

“Can we grab breakfast first?” His stomach echoed it was so hollow.

“How many meals do shifters eat a day?”

He kissed the top of her head and missed her cinnamon scent. The wolfsbane should have worn off by now, but Todd had ground it into such a fine powder it had probably settled right into the sinuses. Who knew how much damage had been done? Without his nose, he truly felt blind. “I expended a lot of energy last night. It must be replaced.”

She stroked her hands over his bare chest as he slipped his arms into his shirt sleeves. “Then I’d better feed you so you have more energy for tonight.”

Her touch sparked his instincts. His. His. His. Claim her. Protect her. Care for her. It was a fine dance to do around such an independent female. A challenge worthy for a handicapped shifter. It was anything but boring.

  Sonya buttoned his shirt.

“I can dress myself.” He tucked his shirt tails into his slacks as an example. The last thing he wanted was a caretaker.

On tiptoe, she pecked him on the lips. “I know, but I like to touch you.”

He leaned toward her for another kiss, deepening it. Nipping her swollen bottom lip, running the tip of his tongue along the crease of her mouth so she’d let him in. They could be a little late.

With her hand on his chest, she retreated. “We have a case.”

“Yes, yes, yes.” He finished dressing quickly so he wouldn’t be tempted to change her mind.

They crossed the street to the police station where the general buzz of multiple people talking quieted as they entered. Whispers still reached his sensitive ears. Word had spread of his uncontrolled shift at the garage and fear laced their voices.

A killer werewolf hunted in their small town. Todd had taken him and an FBI agent down easily. What chance did they have? No one wanted to be bitten. Becoming a shifter should be a choice. Those forced into the life always had a harder time adjusting.

Thinking of it, Blain realized that Eric and his inner circle of friends had been forced to become shifters in one form or another.

Sonya led Blain through the maze of desks.

Blain paused and faced the room. “The alpha of the Vanguards pack is on his way to assist us in hunting this killer. He’s a good wolf. He wouldn’t let you face this on your own.” Blain wanted to add don’t shoot him, but the tension in the room, wrapping around him like a plastic bag, eased.

The murmurs grew louder. From the comments, Eric already had a good reputation for taking care of lawbreaking shifters in the city.

Sonya pulled at his arm. “What was that all about?”

“They thought they were alone in this fight. They needed to know help was on the way.” Blain understood the need. He’d been alone until he’d gone to bootcamp. Having friends, someone to watch his back, was a relief.

Sean strode to them as they entered the meeting room. “You’re right, Blain.”

“Nice.” He grinned. “About what?” Sean relaxed most of Blain’s predator instincts. If he were a shifter, Sean would most likely be an omega. No doubt.

“About testing the women for the shifter virus.” William, on the other hand, had the opposite effect. “They’re all positive.”

“So he’s trying to make himself a mate?” The horror in Sonya’s voice echoed what was in Blain’s heart.

Shifters needed a pack, especially the wolves. If lone wolves went weird because they didn’t have a pack—or if they had no pack because they were weird—who knew? Obviously, Todd was tired of being on his own.

A mate didn’t have to be a shifter. Actually, most weren’t. Maybe Todd was trying to kill two birds with one stone. A female shifter could be both mate and pack.

“Can he force her to be his mate? I mean, I thought it had to be a mutual feeling.” Sonya had on her business voice, but the subject was more pe
rsonal. He had called her his mate.

“They can be one-sided. Love is love and it’s not always fair. This is a sociopath we’re discussing, after all. Most people don’t kidnap their love interests.” Blain couldn’t smell the emotions in the room. He would give his left nut to know what Sonya was feeling. She liked him well enough in bed, but after this case, would she pack her bags and move on to the next job without looking back?

“Knowing his motive is not helping.” William paced the room. “It just makes it clear we unstable shifter loose in the area.”
