  "Yeah, I saw that," he said, his attention diverting back to the mushroom binder.

  "I think your accountant is embezzling money from you," said Lilith. "I'm sure there are other possibilities, but this is kind of weird. Money just disappearing off these charts."

  "He's not embezzling money," said Saul.

  "He's not?"

  "No, I told him to start putting some extra money aside for some stuff."

  "Do you mind if I ask for what? Business stuff?"

  "No."

  "Then?" asked Lilith, pointedly. The plane could wait, it was just Roger's plane anyway.

  "I had them start putting some money aside instead of giving it to me in salary, because I don't have full health care," said Saul, putting the mushroom notebook aside and staring at Lilith.

  "Why?"

  "I have pancreatic cancer," said Saul. "Doc Mulreedy wanted me to start chemo, but I had to put away some money to do it."

  Lilith sat still for a moment, trying to process the fact that her father was dying. "You're dying?"

  "God'll have to yank me with his own fists, but I suppose it's lookin' that way."

  "Is it operable?"

  "No."

  "And you just waited to start chemo?"

  "The money needed to go towards other things," said Saul. "Big ranch, lots of things to do, ya know."

  "Dad."

  "Yeah. You got a plane to catch."

  "You just want me to leave after this?"

  Saul picked up the binder again. "You got a life. Go live it. You ain't my nursemaid. I didn't need one growing up, I don't need one now."

  Lilith stared at her father, the answers to her questions, the peace she wanted to find, all of it was unknown, confusing, and out of reach.
