Fast Lane: A Turbocharged Romance Page 21

by Ada Winter

Not everything is rosy all the time. The hurts of the past sometimes come back to sting us, and when they do, the other half is there to provide a shoulder to lean on. We are human after all, and although we can let go of past disappointments, they don’t always let go of us so easily.

I address the kids now. “Before we take you kids out for our daily ride, Lane and I are going to take a ride of our own. Just us two.”

Tyrelle makes smooching noises and the other kids laugh. We all do.

I direct my attention to Amanda. “Would you mind watching Eliza while she naps?” She nods. Carefully unfastening her now, I place her in the bassinet in the office.

“I’ll saddle up the horses.” Lane is out the door whistling as he walks and the kids move away in the other direction.

“It’s been so long since we’ve had a date. Not that this qualifies as one, but just a few minutes alone will be just what we both need.”

Amanda nods. “You guys have fun. Everything is under control here.”

With that I smile and make my way out to the stable. Lane is just finishing up and he’s become rather good at saddling horses in the last year. He secures my hand in his and walks me over to Belle. “Ladies first”. He motions for me to mount up as he holds the reigns.

Lane mounts Lucky and we slowly guide them over to the gate opening. Fortunately, I was able to purchase these two from Acadia through the approval of Mr. Porter.

“So Mrs. Astor. You want to race?” He smiles and I know he is kidding.

“Last one there gives in to the other’s wishes.” And I was off like a bolt leaving a dumbfounded Lane in the dust before I finish the sentence. He tries to catch up to me, but I have a dozen or more years’ experience on him and he knows it.

We ride hard until we reach Miller’s Creek, and I finally let up. He is out of breath. “That wasn’t fair, Mrs. Astor. But I like your style.”

We both dismount and tie the horses to an old fence rail. I saunter up to him and say, “I believe I have some wishes coming my way.” I begin unbuttoning my blouse and Lane can only look with wanting eyes as my boots come off next, then my jeans, and finally my panties and bra.

My body shows no ill effects from the birth four months prior and I feel as sexy as ever. “I want another baby with you, Lane Astor. We better keep it going if we’re going to reach five.”

“Five?” He moves to meet me and is smiling his devilish grin now. When our mouths meet and his hands caress me, I think back to what got us here. To our best selves. I have plenty of time ahead to relive memories.

My attention goes back to Lane and the present moment. After all, we have a family to grow.
