  Chapter 1

  Friday, March 28th

Kyle Harding believed in letting life come as it came. That especially held true when it came to a particular red-headed spitfire. Tracking the little savage through the crowd, Kyle felt almost every cell in his body start to vibrate. It had always been like that, and normally the sensation ended in disaster.

All the lessons of a lifetime didn’t mean he could stop from crashing into that hole time and time again. Even now as she came too close, he knew he should just let her pass him by without incident. Not that he would.

Especially not with her so blatantly ignoring him. An invitation to “accidently” crash into all those luscious curves, that’s what that was. Sweet feeling and smelling like cinnamon, even if her face puckered up into a scowl at the sight of him, Kyle didn’t let that dissuade him one bit as he latched onto his prey.

  “Well, well, well.”

  “Kyle.”

Hailey Mathews’ nose did that thing it always did when she said his name—crinkled in disgust. Far from menacing, the gesture made her almost irresistibly cute. It sort of enticed a man to pick on her a little more.

“Hailey Mathews at a Cattleman’s event. Will life ever cease to surprise?”

Just as Kyle expected, her gaze narrowed on him in annoyance, and she didn’t disappoint to come back with an immediate insult. “It already did. I’m not the least bit shocked to find you here.”

They’d been eight. That’s when this war started. It had been a sunny spring day. She shoved a firecracker down the headless body of his GI Joe figurine. He bombed her with dog-poo grenades on her walk to school. It had been a tit for tat kind of war that only kids got away with, except now they’d grown up and still nothing had changed.

  Well, some things had.

Back then Hailey had been nothing more than a scrawny girl with a wild, orange halo around her head. Given the way dirt always clung to her clothes and a smart comment always tripped out of her lips, she’d earned her nickname as the little savage.

Just the memory had Kyle’s lips kicking up into a grin, especially as her scowl darkened further. Annoying Hailey came like second nature to him, and nothing annoyed Hailey more than the fact that she wanted him. Well, at least her body did.

It always betrayed her. That ritual hadn’t changed, either, from the way the puckered tips of her breasts panted out to greet him. Kyle let his gaze linger there, knowing it only made her burn more.

“I must say, you’re looking very tempting tonight, Hailey.”

In silent defiance to his ogling, Hailey’s arms crossed over her chest. “You look as plum ugly as ever.”

Kyle gave a true laugh at that. Hailey never changed. Wild, free, and untamed, God, but he’d love to get her beneath him. All those curves helped inflame that itch. Time had been kind to Hailey, filling out her body with very tantalizing dips and slopes. Yeah, they added a little more weight to her body and made her clothes look a little dumpy, but Kyle kind of liked that size.

He liked it since about sixteen when he started noticing just how good Hailey looked bent over a hood with that ass sticking out like an invitation. If any of the other fools in his shop class would have noticed then it might have been all right to show a little more interest in the girl. What had been a negative back then, though, turned only into a positive in Kyle’s mind because the idiots still didn't recognize what they had right there under their noses.

“I see your charm hasn’t changed, either, nor your fashion sense.” He taunted her just to earn that look from her again.

“Never did take to the street walker style.”

“Hmm.” Kyle took another look. “Didn’t your mama ever tell you covering everything up just makes a man itch to unwrap you? But,” his finger reached out to stroke down her neck and Hailey flinched backward, “you seem to be missing something.”

  “Don’t touch me.”

Like he’d obey that command. “Ah, but you’re so soft.”

“I also have teeth, and trust me my bite is a lot worse than my bark.”

He might have taken that threat a little more seriously if her tone hadn’t dipped into the husky notes of arousal. It just made the comment come out dirty. “I love a woman who bites…and screams and bucks with her passion.”

  “Passionate hatred.”

“You protest a lot for somebody who could just walk away.”

That hadn’t been the brightest thing to say, Kyle realized as Hailey did just that. He’d forgotten how H
ailey took to challenges. Never back down, which was something they shared. The little princess had to realize that all that running just tempted him all the more.

Why would she? You ain’t done nothing about it so far.

That angry response echoed out from the cock that had finally started to harden for the first time that night. A real shame about that because there were a hell of a lot of women around who would be a damn sight nicer to his poor, pulsing dick than Hailey Mathews. After all, he might not mind getting bitten, but it all came down to location.

Shaking the empty beer can in his hands, he pitched it toward the open-barreled trashcan. Silently, he awarded himself two points as the aluminum rolled over the rim and fell in. The momentary glow of victory came and went as his gaze traveled over the dingy lip and up into the sparkling chaos of the party whirling around him.

Everybody and everything rolled on at full speed while he stood there feeling like an old man stuck in the mud. The bonfires raged high into the night sky, casting a warm glow over the half naked women running wild through the fields. The half drunk men chasing after them could easily have been mistaken for frat boys instead of the responsible, hard-working men they were.

That’s what the Cattleman Club was all about. A safe place to have some fun and not worry over the wagging of tongues. Not that Kyle felt any shame in any of his needs, and if somebody had something to say about that, they just talk on. Actually, he didn’t know any man who’d have disagreed with him on that. It was the women who got funny about people knowing all their kinks.

Women also got funny about getting kinky with a man. They tended to want to believe that love had something to do with letting a man do that to them. The club offered Kyle an excuse to do just about anything he wanted without consequences. No names given, no obligations made, no woman could misunderstand that.

That had always been the best advantage of the Cattleman’s club, until lately. The endless sea of pretty women and constant flow of hot sex had actually begun to feel like monotony. A fact that shocked even Kyle. Not that he didn’t want his pretty woman or night after night of sex, but Kyle just wanted to go home for that.

His mama always told him that a dog only had so many tricks in him. By the time he finished running through all his, he better have found a master who loved him enough not mind that he wasn’t so cute and lovable anymore. Kyle always listened to his mom and figured one day he’d end up chained.

That time felt like now. He’d come to the point where he should be getting off work to go home to a house that smelled nice and woman that smelled even better. Ideally, she’d be one of those women who could actually cook and clean but not be one of those fragile kinds of ladies. What he really needed was a lady with an attitude.

Kind of like a savage princess.

For all the naked women running around, he didn’t see but one who fit that description. On its own, his gaze found Hailey again, talking to the Davis brothers, and Kyle didn’t have to wonder about that. He knew the inside scoop there.

A six-year-old with a crayon could have connected those dots. Hailey’s best friend, Patton, happened to belong to the Davis brothers. While the details had certainly not been aired publicly, nobody doubted anybody who touched Patton would be held accountable for touching what belonged to them boys.

Three boys. Three big boys. Very big boys. He and about everybody else had been warning Cole about just that. Cole, his best friend, didn’t like to listen to reason. He especially didn’t like to hear the word no, so Patton saying yes when he suggested they take a drive had been viewed as a good thing by Cole.

As Kyle watched Slade and Chase Davis make a rapid departure, he had to wonder just how long Cole would be holding that opinion. Hell, he didn’t even know if Cole would hold on to all his teeth through the night, but it was his own dumbass fault for not listening.

That’s why Kyle didn’t make a single move to help his buddy out. Instead, his focus remained on the little spitfire trailing in the brothers’ wake. He could almost hear fate calling him a dumbass for letting her walk away. He’d let her do that too often, but then again he really hadn’t been ready to settle down.

Just the idea made him smirk because when he thought of Hailey the last thing he thought of was domestication. Eight years of waiting and wanting hadn’t dulled the primitive urges filling his balls as he tracked that sassy ass as it bounced its way through the crowd.

That is a mountain made to be conquered.

Before he could indulge in any gluttonous victory feast, he’d have to figure out just how to con the little princess out of her clothes.

  He needed a plan.

A plan, a little luck, and certainly a willingness to sink to any level.

  * * * *

  Saturday, March 29th

“I told you, you ain’t never had a chance at that woman.”

Whatever it takes, whatever lever I have to sink to, I’m going to bend Hailey to my will and keep her as a plaything. Cole Jackson had become quite tired of Hailey Mathews making him the laughingstock of Pittsview. About every man in the damn Cattlemen’s Club had a good laugh at his expense last night, this morning, and probably for the next few weeks out.

“Hailey would rather dance at his funeral than with Cole any day of the week,” Jacob grunted, earning him a dark glower.

Not that Cole could deny it. Hailey didn’t like him. Never had. That didn’t change that he always had a boner waiting for the little darling. It’d been half-mast the first time he met her. Not that he’d been panting after the girl. Hailey might be cute, but she wouldn’t be drawing any catcalls from the sidelines. He’d just been being his normally friendly self, trying to bring a little happiness into another person’s life and what did Hailey do?

  She bit him.

God but he loved a woman who bit, made conquering her worth every single eleven inches he could offer up to the job. Being hard for a woman didn’t mean he intended to play the fool for her. Cole didn’t chase what wouldn’t chase him back. Waste of time.

Especially not when he knew Hailey would come his way eventually. He didn’t care how much bluster and fire she put into her supposed dislike of him. Cole had a keen ability to tell when a woman wanted him, and Hailey’s panties dripped, she lusted so hard.

A seasoned and successful hunter, Cole had long ago identified Hailey Mathews as a spitfire. They tended to burn hot and wild, fueled by their own passionate natures to go the extreme. That included hating and screwing.

That meant bagging Hailey wouldn’t only be a very large notch on his bedpost, but it would be a hell of a ride to take. That made Cole’s own cock go a little misty around the eye. Yeah, he imagined more than once all the fun he could have with Hailey Mathews under his direction. He just hadn’t figured out a way to get in close enough without getting mauled.

He thought he’d seen a path, but he’d been blinded by his own driving need. It left him vulnerable to assault. That’s just what happened last night when Hailey and her little gal pal, Patton, had set him up.

That stilled the fingers swirling the spoon through his mug. The sugar had long since dissolved into the hot liquid, but he didn’t take a sip. Instead, he glared out at the world as he felt the fresh burn of Hailey’s most recently delivered insult.

Cole knew the moment he saw Patton next to Hailey who she was. A legend almost in the Pittsview, she did her reputation justice. Not that Cole had really cared much about Patton. Sure, he’d have screwed her, but he’d really been after the hope of making Hailey jealous.

That they used his game against him only made him ache that much more to punish the fiery red-head once he got her beneath him. Then, they’d see who liked to be bitten…whipped, spanked, fucked, and eaten out for hours.

Got to stop thinking about that.

It never helped him come up with a plan.

Trying to shake the dirty thoughts from his mind, Cole’s gaze skipped over the remains of the Bread Box’s morning rush. Barely
nine in the morning and the little bakery already looked worn through.

  Silent as a grave.

Except for the click and clack of plates being stacked as Heather scuttled about trying to rectify the damage. Cole’s gaze narrowed in on her as he tracked her movements from table to table. Cute and petite, the fact that she had a kid didn’t stop him or any other man from flirting her up whenever she came close.

Not that Cole would have gotten with a woman with a kid. Kids meant commitment, and he didn’t do that. Not anymore.

“Hell, Hailey tried to bury him last night.” Aaron laughed, drawing Cole back into his cousin’s obnoxious poking. “Didn’t I warn him that Patton was up to no good?”

“That you did.” Jacob nodded at his brother.

“And didn’t I tell him that Hailey and Patton were setting him up?”

“Hell, even I told him that.”

  “And did he listen?”

Jacob shook his head like a Sunday worshipper in the pew. “No, sir.”

“And did they get over good on him?”

“His ass almost got beat bloody by Slade Davis.”

Yeah, Cole’s cousins had it right on every point. That didn’t mean the story ended there. This story wouldn’t end until he had Hailey so under his thumb she couldn’t come without his approval.

“Look at him.” His cousin’s voice broke annoyingly through Cole’s thoughts. “He got that goofy look on his face again.”

“You mean that no good look,” Jacob shot back.

“No, I mean that he got that screwed but didn’t get any pussy—”
