“Do we know how to do it?”
“I do,” I said. “I’m the cook! You can be my assistant.”
Meekly Em said, “OK.”
“And for pudding—”
“Something nice!”
“For pudding,” I said, “I shall make possets.”
Nobody, but nobody, could resist my possets. Well, nobody except Caroline. I should have known then that she wasn’t going to be right for Dad. Polly was the one!
We’d always loved Polly. I reckoned Dad had too – he just didn’t realise it.
“It’s up to us,” I said.
There was a pause. I thought for a minute that Em was going to get cold feet, but quite suddenly she seemed to make up her mind. She sprang off the bed, tipping a surprised Bella out of her arms. “I’ll go and ring Polly right away!”
“Friday,” I called, as Em disappeared through the door. “And don’t forget to tell her there’ll be possets!”
