“I know it’s very odd when you compare it to New York City.”

“I can see why you come out here as often as you can. Instead of moving back in creating an office in Sugar Hill, you should move your corporate office to this town. That way you would live near parents and be able to see them even more.” Sally said.

“That is a good idea, but have this special lady in my life now that really loves the city. I don’t want to be without her so I would never move and be this far away from her.”

“Maybe that special lady would be willing to move with you, if you asked her nicely.”

“But you said you loved New York City and you’ve only been there for a little bit. I would feel bad asking you to leave.”

“Silas I love you more than I could ever love the city. Also I kind of do miss the slow pace of a small town. If you really want to do this, then I’m on board.” Sally stated.

“Sally you are truly one amazing woman and I wish I could have met you sooner.” Silas complemented her.

“But I don’t know how that would have worked, remember I’m only 24, and I probably wouldn’t have been legal,” Sally said, laughing.

“Look at who’s worried about the age difference!” He said jokingly.

“So tell me what do they call a male cougar?” Sally chuckled.

“Oh no! You didn’t just call me a cougar! I’ll have you know that I would be called a manther.”

Sally busted out laughing, “Are you kidding me? A manther? What the hell is that?”

“The male equivalent of a cougar! Duh! I guess they couldn’t call it panther, because it doesn’t sound as good!”

“So my sexy manther, which house belongs to your parents?” Sally laughed.

“Hmm, I shouldn’t have told you that word! It’s two houses down on the left.” He pointed as he drove to their destination.

He got her bag out of the car and opened her door for her. “Welcome to Chateau McComb!”

“Wow! It’s so beautiful.” Sally commented.

“My dad used to work in construction and had his crew build this house before he retired. My mother and he designed it together. Wait until you see the inside. They really did some amazing things with this house!” Silas said proudly.

He gave her a quick tour, cutting it short so they could go to the hospital.

  Chapter 22

Silas held her hand firmly in his as they walked into the hospital. Several of the nurses stopped and told him, “It’s nice to see you again Mr. McComb.”

Sally saw a few looks of jealousy but mostly just people who were being friendly. As they got closer to the room where his father was, she felt her nerves grow tenser.

Silas squeezed her hand and whispered, “It’ll be fine, don’t be so nervous.”

As they walked in the room Sally noticed a man who was the spitting image of Silas, with a little bit more gray in his hair and some wrinkles. If this is what Silas would look like at that age, she knew she would still love him just as much as she did now. His father didn’t look old at all. She put the thoughts of their age differences behind her. Perhaps it was the thought that she would eventually be left alone when he died, because surely he would pass before she would. But she wouldn’t let this love go because of that fear.

His father stood up when they walked in the room and came over and gave Silas a hug. He then wrapped his arms around Sally in a warm embrace. “I’m glad you came with Silas. I haven’t seen him in such turmoil for a long time. But now I can see he’s happy once more.” His father said to her.

“It’s really nice to meet you. Has there been any change in your wife yet?” Sally asked.

“Not yet, but hopefully soon she will come out of the coma. The latest word is that they think her body did this on purpose so it could focus on healing the damage that was done when she hit her head.” He explained.

Silas moved over to the bed and give his mother a kiss on her forehead. “Mom if you can hear me, I want you to know I’m back, and I brought that girl I was telling you about the other day.”

Sally felt a thrill go through her body thinking that Silas had talked about her. She wondered what he had said to her but she didn’t ask him as she knew it wasn’t the right time to do that.

“Hey dad, when was the last time you ate?” Silas asked.

“I honestly don’t know. But I’m not really hungry.” He answered.

“Try to eat something and we’ll stay with mom. I’ll call you if she wakes up before you get back.” Silas stated.

His father grudgingly left to go eat. Silas pulled a chair up beside his for Sally to sit.

“Sally tell mom about yourself. I try to talk to her whenever I’m here. They say that she can hear us and that maybe it will help her recover quicker knowing someone is here waiting for her to wake up.” Silas explained.

“Hello Mrs. McComb, my name is Sally Yates, I work for Silas in his office. I come from Nebraska and it’s a lot different than New York City. I would say our small town is a lot like the one you live in now; very peaceful and quiet. The kind of place where you can trust everyone and can leave your doors unlocked at night with no fear. My whole life I have longed to leave Nebraska and come to the big city. But now visiting this quaint little town I realize how much I miss the peacefulness of it all. I don’t know how many times you’ve been to New York City, but I’m sure if you have been you’ve noticed the difference too. I’m trying to talk Silas into moving his office back to this town, and maybe soon we’ll be neighbors.”

Silas squeezed her hand and looked at her. Sally could see the love shining in his eyes and had no doubt about his feelings towards her.

Silas started talking to his mom about his childhood, recalling fond memories of when he was a child. Sally listened and learned more about the man she was head over heels in love with.

“I think I just felt her squeeze my hand.” Silas commented.

“Great maybe she’s coming out of the coma. Do you want me to get the nurses?” Sally asked.

  “Yes please.”

Sally went to find a nurse and brought her back into the room.

“I felt her squeeze my hand several times now. A couple more since you left to find the nurse.” Silas announced as they walked into the room.

The nurse checked her vitals and commented, “Keep talking to her, I think she may be coming out of the coma soon.”

Silas recalled a Little League game he had played in as a youngster. “Remember how loudly you were cheering me on, even when I would strike out?” He laughed.

His mother’s eyes opened and she got a smile on her face, “Of course I remember that! The other parents looked at me like I was crazy, but I didn’t care.”

Her voice was low and Sally filled up her glass with water and helped her get a few sips of it.

“Who is this lovely young lady?” His mother asked.

“This is Sally Yates and she’s going to be my wife one day.” Silas said introducing her.

Sally could see the confusion that passed over his mother’s face, “Nice to meet you Mrs. McComb.”

“Call me Martha; Mrs. McComb makes me sound far too old. Though I do feel really old right now.”

“I gotta call dad and let him know you are awake. I made him go eat something,” Silas said as he stood and took his phone out of his pocket.

“Good thing you made him eat, that fool would let himself starve just to make sure I was okay.” Martha laughed.

Sally could hear the love in Martha’s voice as she talked about her husband.

“Sally come sit by me and tell me about you and Silas. It seems I’ve missed a few things since I fell and hurt myself.” Martha said.

Silas interrupted quickly and told his mom, “I caught Jackie cheating. But you know I was well on my way to a divorce before that; it just had to be when I was ready. Sally is my new Executive assistant, and she made me realize just how unhappy I was with Jackie. So when I also found out she was cheating on me, my only choice wa
s to divorce her.” Silas explained.

“Okay Sally, now tell me how you and Silas fell in love.” Martha said, wanting to hear from Sally what had happened between them.

Sally sat down by Martha and begun sharing the story, one that Silas himself was surprised to hear about.

“Well when I was 16 I knew that I loved the business world. I had always planned to go to college to study business but I wanted to work for company that was doing the right things. So I started searching for cutting-edge businesses and came across McComb industries. I read up on the company and the men behind it. I’m not ashamed to admit that I had quite the crush on Silas at that time. I watched many of his videos and figured he’d be one of the best to work with. So I tried to do well in college and get good grades. I worked with another company in Nebraska for a couple of years before I found a job opening at McComb Industries...”

She continued, “I jumped at the opportunity and sent my resume to Silas. The day I got his letter back about the interview, I was ecstatic. I hoped to impress him at the interview and eventually be hired. But honestly during the interview I thought I had completely messed it up. I was so nervous. He was so much more charismatic in person and I had a hard time thinking straight. I was sitting in front of the man I’d been crushing on for almost 8 years by that time. But somehow he saw through that nervousness and offered me a job. Not on the spot, but a few days later, and accepted it quickly. Once I moved to New York City and worked closely with him, I knew that I had to control my emotions. Since he was married I didn’t pursue him, but that didn’t mean I didn’t still find him very attractive. When I found out he was unhappy I thought maybe my chances of getting to know him better had increased. Then Jackie came into the office and they had this huge fight right in front of me, with both of them were talking about getting a divorce. I was sad for him, but happy at the same time and I felt really guilty about it. But Silas let me know how he felt about me and I knew that we had a chance at something wonderful.” Sally explained.

Martha chuckled, “I like her a lot, and she’s straightforward and pulls no punches!”

“I love her Sally mom, and I asked her to marry me once the divorce is final.” Silas announced.

His father had made it back by this time and heard the news. “That’s great son, we’re really happy for you! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you smile this much.” His dad said.

“Far too long, in my opinion!” Martha added.

  Chapter 23

“Are you absolutely certain you won’t mind living here?” Silas asked Sally.

She laughed, “For the hundredth time I’m positive I love this little town. And your parents are so sweet. I know they love the idea of you being around more.”

“This is not for my parents Sally, this is for us too. Sure I love the idea of being around them more often. I get to spend more time with them, and I’m here if anything goes wrong, not hours away. But in the long run it comes down to whether you will be happy here in this small town.” Silas commented.

“Silas I would go anywhere to be with you. But the fact is that I love this little town and I love your parents. Let’s do it!” Sally said.

“Wait you love this little town and my parents what about me?”

Sally smacked him in the arm, “You know how much I love you Silas! Don’t act like I don’t tell you all the time!”

He laughed, “I know honey, I just like picking on you!”

“Oh the ways of the manther, I may never understand them all!”

He picked her up and tickled her. His touches soon became gentler as he moved his hands over her body. They had made love almost every night since his mother had come home. Being discreet about it, he moved his mouth down her body.

Sally was soon crying out as he took her to the edge more than once. She knew she would never tire of his gentle touches and his love making.

She sighed happily as they lay on the bed together.

“I can’t believe you had a crush on me all that time.” Silas commented.

“Hey you are one sexy man and I couldn’t help it.” Sally stated.

“Maybe I should come up for a name for you, like manther, but better!”

“Nah that’s okay, you can just call me all those sweet things you do! Let’s look for a place for the business. Will you move the other divisions her as well?” Sally said, trying to refocus them on the business at hand.

“Good questions. But I think we’ll have to leave some of the divisions in New York City. It’ll be wrong to relocate all of the workers as their lives are all set up there. But maybe we can open the new one here with the corporate headquarters. That way we’ll be able to keep a closer eye on the production of the new drugs, and [people who are offered the position can than choose whether they want to move here or not.” Silas said.

“I saw a nice piece of property for sale the other day when we were driving around. Maybe we should go and have a look.” Sally offered.

“Do you remember where it was?”

“Sure, it’s on the way to the hospital. You know that one corner where the office structure is surrounded by all the trees?”

“Yeah I know where you are talking about. Let’s go and look at it again. I’ll contact the agent once we are out there.” Silas stated.

“We should also let your parents know the good news, they’ll be thrilled.” Sally said.

“My mom was pretty sure you already had me talked into it. She’ll love having you close by. You know she never got along with Jackie very well. Jackie always had this snobbish attitude towards my parents.” Silas explained.

“Oh I’ve heard plenty from your mother and how she felt about Jackie, believe me.”

Silas laughed, “You’ll have to tell me some of those stories.”

  “Definitely!”

  Chapter 24

Silas was discussing the deal with the agent as Sally listened. They had agreed this would be the perfect spot. Perhaps the hospital would even be willing to partner with them and test out some of the new drugs the division would create one day.

They both had high hopes in this endeavor, though it would be an uphill battle against other huge pharmaceutical companies.

“Silas you know what I never thought about, my new lease with on my new apartment. I don’t know if I’ll get as lucky as last time, and I might have to pay the full lease.” Sally said, thinking for the first time of the dilemma it might create.

“Oh I think the owner will let you off without a problem.” He chuckled.

“How can you be so sure?” She asked still not catching on.

“That building was built by a division of McComb Industries. I’m the owner; well my parents and I are joint owners. I think you’ll have three people who will let you out of a lease without a problem.” Silas explained.

“Oh no wonder I got such a sweet deal!”

“Hey, I was watching out for the woman I love.” Silas commented.

“You didn’t love me at that point.”

“How do you know? Sally you wowed me the first time I met you. You claim you were nervous and that you felt like you messed up during the interview. But what I saw was a confident woman who was the perfect choice to add to our company. I won’t say that I didn’t find you quite attractive. But I wasn’t thinking of you that way, not at that point anyway. However, that first day of work, sitting close to you, oh and seeing how that dressed hugged your curves. I will be honest and say if I had been a lesser man I would have seduced you that first night, especially when I was watching the delight that spread over your face looking out over the city. I saw a woman who was not only happy, but thrilled to experience something new. That night when I went home I tried to reconcile the feelings you had brought up inside of me. I felt guilty at the same time, knowing that I was considering cheating on my wife. I took my vows very seriously, and had never been this tempted in the past. The next day was the day Jackie had come in asking for the divorce. But right bef
ore you showed up I was on the phone with the private investigator I had hired. He had just told me about the pictures he had gotten of Jackie and her new lover. So when she came in I was prepared, well not for the slaps across the face, but for what she was going to do or say. I saw it as a gift from God; he had brought you into my life and helped to remove the person who stood in our way. It seemed like a sign to me, one that meant I was open to pursue you earnestly and without repercussions. So I took the chance and here we are now. I love you Sally and I’m not quite sure when it actually began, but I know that I want no one but you by my side as we pave the way to a new future together.”

She teared up at his words, “That was beautiful Silas, thank you. I love you and want no one but you for the rest of my life either. Though I fear the day that you will pass and I’ll be left alone to continue.”

“Oh honey that will be years away, let’s not focus on the bad things. We’ll have a long life together and I’ve never been happier than I am with you.”

He hugged her close to him.

“I’m sorry I just seem to be a lot more emotional lately.” She admitted.

“Come on, let’s let my parents know the good news.” Silas said as he led her back to his car.

  Chapter 25

Silas mom was elated by the idea of both of them moving to town. “This is great news!” She cried happily. “I’ll be so happy to get to know you better too Sally.” She hugged Sally tightly.

“I’m really happy to be moving here too, and hope to have tea with you more often!” Sally smiled.

“She’s so much nicer than Jackie.” Martha said to Silas.

  Silas laughed, “I know mom.”

“Don’t you agree Thomas?” Martha turned towards her husband.

“Much nicer. She doesn’t have that ‘I’m better than anyone’ attitude!” He laughed.

Silas was shocked by his father’s comment, he had always seemed to enjoy Jackie’s company. Upon seeing his look, his father patted him on the back, “I told you I was the star actor in the high school play didn’t I?”
