Twisted by the Boss (Tempted Series Book 4) Page 9

by Hazel Kelly

I heard the tone in his voice, the biting reference about his mother.

“I don’t know what your problem is. All I know is that if a girl that perfect cared about me, I wouldn’t fuck it up by taking her for granted.”

  “Is that all?” I asked.

He took a deep breath and leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees. “Yeah.”

“I trust you will keep this knowledge between the three of us.”

  “Sure, whatever.”

“Your mother doesn’t need to know.”

  “She already knows.”

  “What do you mean?”

“She told me months ago that she thought you were screwing one of your employees.”

“Why does she tell you things like that?”

He shrugged. “I guess because she doesn’t have anyone else to vent to.”

  “Oh.”

“But I don’t even pay attention to it if I’m honest. I know I’ve been a dick to you in the past, but I was just being immature. Part of the reason I’m here is because I want to fix our relationship.”

  “You do?”

“Yeah. It’s not like you’re some kind of loser that I’m ashamed of.”

“That’s the nicest thing you’ve said to me since I sent you that hovercraft.”

He smiled. “I absolutely loved that thing. I was depressed for weeks when I got too heavy for it.”

  “So I heard.”

“Anyway, I want to get to know you and I want to learn about your business.”

“It means a lot to me to hear you say that. I thought you were just here to appease your Mother.”

“Not at all. It was my idea actually.”

  “I didn’t realize.”

“And just because my loyalties have always lied with Mom in the past doesn’t mean I don’t want you to be happy.”

  “Thanks.”

“Which is why I had to come up here and tell you that you were being an asshole and making a huge mistake.”

  “I heard everything you said.”

“So what are you going to do about it?”

“What do you mean what am I going to do about it?”

“Well you have to do something or you’re going to lose her.”

  I exhaled through my nose.

“It might even be too late.”

  “Too late?”

“I don’t know for sure, but she was really upfront with me about what she wants, and it’s nothing crazy. If you won’t give it to her, she’ll find someone else who will.”

  “I suppose you’re right.”

“She won’t have to go far, either. There’s not a single member of your staff that wouldn’t put their job on the line for one night with her, man, I’m telling you.”

  “Don’t call me, man.”

“Sorry.” He put his hands on his knees like he was about to stand up. “Anyway, that’s all I wanted to say.”

  “Wait.”

He dropped his butt in the seat again.

“Why did she tell you the truth?”

“Probably because she knew you wouldn’t and because she didn’t think I would ever stop asking her out otherwise.”

I smiled. Ella was right. Maybe Ben and I had more in common than I thought.

“And I wouldn’t have either,” he said. “I mean she’s really special and her body is-”

  “That’s enough.”

“Sorry.” He smiled. “I just think you’re making a huge mistake if you don’t ask her to be more than just fuck buddies.”

“You’ve made your position quite clear.”

“Is that all then?” he asked. “I’m supposed to meet Martine on the fourteenth floor in a few minutes.”

  “One last thing.”

  “Shoot.”

  “What would you do?”

“What would I do to what?”

“To win her back? I’m not saying that’s what I want to do necessarily. But if I did, what do you think I would have to do to make her feel good about giving me another chance?”

Ben put his chin in his hand and considered the question. “My first instinct is that you should do the opposite of whatever you’ve been doing.”

  “Nevermind.”

“Hold on. Let me think.” He wrung his hands in front of him. “You might have to suck it up and do something big.”

  “Something big?”

“Yeah, girls love it when you go to a bit of trouble for them. It would probably mean even more coming from you because you never have to lift a finger unless you want to.”

I listened carefully, nodding the whole time.

  “I don’t know if that’s helpful or-”

  “No it is.”

He stood up and headed for the door. “Great.”

  “Ben?”

He looked over his shoulder at me.

“I’m not sure how to say this, but I appreciate you coming up here to tell me I was being an asshole.”

“Anytime,” he said. “And good luck.”

I leaned back in my chair and watched the door close behind him.

“Thanks,” I said. “I’m gonna need it.”
