And then, with nothing more than a gesture of his index finger and thumb, Goth Sullus broke Tyrus Rechs’s neck from a distance.

The Mark I armor fell over and lay still.

The first stars were coming out above.

The man in the dark robe began to laugh beneath the lens of the galaxy he would conquer.

And it was a terrible thing.

The strange gray shuttle came down in the night. Its ominous hum rose above the crackle of the bonfire the man in the dark robe known as Goth Sullus had made.

Upon the pyre, the body of Tyrus Rechs was being consumed by flames.

Sullus stood and watched the flames consume his oldest of friends. The burning ash and sparks rose up against the stars of the galactic edge.

  The armor lay nearby.

The four admirals exited the shuttle as soon as troopers had formed a defensive perimeter. Cautiously they approached the man known as Goth Sullus. His back was turned to them.

“Sire, our fleet has arrived.” The admirals, all in crisp, tight-fitting black uniforms, stood aside to reveal a man dressed in the white garb of a Republic admiral. “Admiral Devers of the Republic wishes to speak with you.”

  Sullus nodded.

Devers stepped forward and lowered himself to one knee, his head bowed. “Sire, I present to you, for the benefit of the galaxy, the Republic’s third sector fleet.”

The wind keened softly, causing a gust of sparks to leap away into the darkness.

  “Good,” said Goth Sullus.

He turned to face them all.

  “You may commence the attack.”
