“No. No. No.” Julia groaned as Ben placed her sitting between Arden’s legs. Her back rested on Arden’s chest.

“You’re almost done,” Arden murmured into her ear as he smoothed her hair back away from her face.

Ben was instructed to stay next to Ann and follow her directions to a tee during the delivery.

“Okay now, Julia, get ready to push.” Ann nodded to Arden who positioned Julia’s torso forward into pushing position and did a soft backward ten count in her ear.

Julia was tired but obediently repeated the cycle of pushing and resting when told to until she couldn’t do it anymore. “I can’t anymore,” Julia moaned. She was crying, a steady stream of tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Bullshit,” Ben said to her. “You’re almost done, Julia. Don’t quit.”

“When I give the go-ahead, we’re going to do a twenty count, and if you give it all you’ve got, you could be done. All right, Julia?” Ann asked.

  Julia nodded.

Ann moved Ben so he was shoulder to shoulder with her in front of Julia. Ann laid a clean towel on the bed to the left of Julia‘s legs. She met Ben’s eyes. “I’m going to help deliver the shoulders. After that, you grab hold of the baby with both hands. It’s going to be slippery, so get a good grip and help pull the rest of the child out. I’ll take care of the umbilical cord. Once the cord is clamped and cut, you keep holding the baby for me so I can suck out its mouth and nose. Then put the child on the towel and wrap it up. You got it?”

  Ben nodded.

  Ann nodded to Arden.

“Okay, Julia, we’re going to do twenty. Do your best and you should be done.” Arden supported Julia’s torso back up into pushing position and began his twenty count.

  “Twenty, nineteen, eighteen, seventeen, sixteen…”

  “Head is delivered.”

  “Fifteen, fourteen, thirteen, twelve, eleven…”

  “Shoulders are delivered.”

  “Ten, nine, eight, seven…”

  “Baby’s out. Relax, Julia.”

  “It’s a girl,” Ben declared.

But, there was no cry. Julia began to panic. She could see Ben and Ann working.

  “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong,” Ann said, still working.

Ben held the baby girl for Ann as she clamped and cut the cord then sucked out her mouth and nose.

Suddenly, their tiny new daughter began a pissed off wail of a cry that was so intense it ended in a couple of seconds of silence that made Julia will her to take a breath and wail again.

“Looks like she has her mother’s temperament,” Ben commented, smiling ear to ear. He wrapped her up in the towel, gently wiping off her face with one corner. He stood with the baby in his arms and walked around to the head of the bed. “She’s perfect,” he said as he placed the wailing newborn in her mother’s arms.

Ben sat down next to them as Arden looked over Julia’s shoulder. Julia cried tears of joy over the tiny girl.

“She looks like you, too,” Arden whispered into her ear.

He was right. The baby girl already looked a little like Julia, with a spray of dark hair and big round eyes. And Ben was right. The baby girl loudly proclaimed that she’d inherited her mother’s disposition.

Julia leaned over and kissed her baby. “Her name is Hope.”
