Alex, Leon and Raddler were bringing beer from their truck. Adam and Anna were supervising the barbecue, while Ryan was preparing the meat. Celine was looking at the stars, swinging away in her favorite pink hammock, while talking to Sean's mum about the pregnancy. The only one who wasn't there was Dean. He'd called earlier to say he was late. God only knew what the man was up to.
They all made their way towards the mostly empty table, where the new family was entertaining a giggling Ellie.
Adam was the first one to hug Janet. "That's great news, Bubbly."
His embrace wasn't long because he went stiff when a pained bellow pierced the air. As he turned around he saw the source a few feet away. A massive auburn-brown bear was swaying from side to side with confusion clear in its eyes. Adam recognized his mate's chocolate-brown eyes in a second. He moved towards his mate as if the attraction was pulling them together. Anna's bear rubbed her head on Adam's hand in an affectionate gesture.
"Sorry guys, I have to go. We'll be back later. It's the first time she managed to change, so this calls for exploration," he explained to his stunned friends. They all knew Anna was having a hard time, but both of them were very private so nobody knew she had trouble changing into her bear form.
Ryan gently pulled Celine to his side and stroked her lower back. Her baby-bump wasn't that visible yet, but a back rub made her feel better any time. As Sean shook hands with Ryan, he thanked him for all his help.
Once everyone was done congratulating them, they went back to preparing the food.
It wasn't long till they all sat down at the table to enjoy a lovely meal together. Even Anna and Adam were back.
"I hope you haven't forgotten about me," Dean's voice came from the forest as he showed up with Matt, Janet's boss.
"Oh, look who's here," Celine said. "Let me get two more plates for you guys. Glad you could join us, Matt!"
As Celine stood, Ryan put his hand on her shoulder, urging her to sit down. "I'll get them some plates."
Dean and Matt engaged in conversation as if they were part of the group already. Matt clarified that whenever he was available he spent time up there with Raddler, Leon and Alex. He even said that they'd built a cabin for him somewhere close. He was a nice addition to the group as far as Janet and Celine were concerned if their smiles were anything to go by.
"Have you told them the good news, Janet?" Matt asked all of a sudden.
Janet's cheeks turned red and she squeezed Sean's thigh. "No, not yet," she replied.
"Oh, come on, Bubbly. Brag a little. It's your right. Do you want me to tell them?" Matt encouraged her.
"Okay," she said as all the eyes in the clearing next to Ryan's chalet turned on her. "My parents wouldn't be very happy to hear this, but I hope you guys will be. I'm the new Event Manager at Shifting Impulse."
Everybody clapped and cheered as Sean, Ellie and Sean's mum hugged her. They were thrilled for her. Like a real family would be.
"I have some news of my own to share," Sean's mother said. "My son is moving to North Bloom Lake to be with all of you and I'm coming too. It's high time for a change."
Excitement filled Janet's heart as she saw their group grow into a family. Not a perfect family, but something she'd dreamed of having for years.
