Peter Wallace, whose name was also spelled Willis in some documents, is where some believe Belize derived its name.
From the Annals of Jamaica 1827:
“Willis, the notorious buccaneer, was the first Englishman who settled on the banks of the river to which he gave his name. The Spaniards called him Walis, and the corrupting influence of time softened it to Belize.”
The Belize flag represents the unity of the nation’s people and is the only country in the world that depicts people on its flag. On the left of the coat of arms stands a pale-skinned man holding an axe, and on the right, a dark-skinned man holds an oar. Above the coat of arms there is a mahogany tree which represents the trade that became the backbone of the colony, and below is Belize’s motto written in Latin: Sub Umbra Floreo—Under the Shade I Flourish.
