Guilty Till Proven Innocent Page 2

by Devine, Dorothy

“I know what you are going to say, so please save it and only get to tell me what I want to hear. I have to say that I don’t have to be here. But since it’s only fair that you are given a chance to prove your innocence, despite being caught pants down in the act of killing, I think you should be able to tell me something that I can use to prove your innocence. So, without wasting either of our time, I want you to come clean and tell me whatever the hell is going on without leaving anything behind. So speak.”

Jacob shook a little bit, as though he didn’t know what he was supposed to say or where to begin. But as soon as he was composed for a little bit, he cleared his throat and begun talking.

“I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. How many times am I supposed to tell you people that I am innocent?”

“Yes, we have already been through that. Now all that I want to know is what the heck were you doing up there huh? I have been trying my level best to make sure that you are getting out even if it’s on a technicality. But from the look of things, you just don’t care anymore. If you don’t give us anything new than telling us how innocent you are, then you aren’t going to go as far as you might have wanted. So please, it’s your time now.”

Jacob was now starting to shed tears and for a moment, it did appear as though the good police officer was about to kick his ass so that he could get to crying properly. But then again, the only good thing that would have come out of all that would have been lots of problems since Jacob could pretty much sue her.

“Look, I didn’t come here to see a grown man cry. So it would be a good thing for you to get your shit together and make sure that you are getting to give me something, anything for crying out loud.”

There was some long stretch of silence. And from the look of things, it was starting to appear as though her threats had done some good at the end of the day. It had also appeared as though virtually every damn thing was going to work out just perfectly.

“You know, I can walk away from this place and this will be the last you see me, as well as the only hope that you have to make something work for you. So please, get to do yourself a favor and tell me whatever the heck that is going on.”

At that point, agent Kennedy was starting to believe that Jacob wasn’t insane or was he an idiot freak as he was trying his level best to sell himself as.

He was protecting someone and from the look of things, it was someone who was really close to him. And in as much as she respected that, there was no way that agent Kennedy was going to sit there and let a murderer go scot free. If Jacob wanted to take the fall for it, that was his problem. But agent Kennedy’s problem was making sure that there were fewer killers walking the streets.

“Look, I know you are protecting someone and so you think that taking the fall is going to protect them. But tell me, what is going to happen if you are in jail but you can’t protect them?”

At that moment, Jacob was starting to shake a little and it was at that moment that agent Kennedy knew that she indeed had touched a nerve. And so she didn’t want to stop there. All that she wanted to do was to make sure that she had followed the same path and make sure that she had irritated him so much to the point that she was getting whatever she wanted.

  “I told you, I didn’t do it.”

“And I believe you, so tell me, who did it? And why are you covering for him?”

And once again, it seemed as though there was no telling why he was doing it. But either way, she wasn’t going to just sit there and do nothing. So all that could be done was to just kick back and make sure that she was continued to pester him. But his lawyer showed up and agent Kennedy was forced to fall back.

But she knew that she was on to something and that it would be a good idea for her to make sure that she had made a point of making a follow up as soon as possible. It was time to give the forensics guy another visit.

  Chapter 5

  -The doppelganger-

From the look of things, there was nothing that agent Kennedy could pretty much do despite the fact that she had all the instinct that told her that Jacob was innocent. The court had a way of doing things and that was by getting the evidence to prove that either a defendant was innocent or guilty. Without the latter, then the only thing that would make sense would have been to wait and see if a miracle could happen.

But at that moment, it was starting to look as though there was no miracle that was going to happen at any given moment and the only thing that would make sense was for agent Kennedy to just kick back and get to accept that there was nothing that she could for Jacob.

And just like that, agent Mary Kennedy thought that maybe it was just about that time that she accepted that she did all in her power to make things right and that said, start moving on. But the problem was that no matter how hard she tried to do just that, nothing was coming forth and she always kept on veering back to those damaging thoughts of not being able to save someone that she thought was innocent and that was just too darn bad altogether.

Finally, that one call that she had been waiting for hit her phone and from the look of things, all that she could have done at that time would have been to kick back and wait for a minute before picking it up.

“Come on now, I have been waiting for this call. Tell me what you have.”

The courtroom was already in session and the judge was just about to make his final ruling when agent Kennedy came busting in waving a couple of papers in her hand. Everyone, including the magistrate as well as defendant looked as though they had been startled to some extent. But it was the magistrate who expressed the fact that he was pissed off. But thankfully, agent Kennedy had something that was going to change everything.

“I hope you have something that is important or else I will throw you for contempt.”

“Sorry for the interruption. And I assure you that I wouldn’t have done this unless I had something very important to inform the court.”

  “And what might that be?”

“I am glad that you asked. You are about to convict the wrong person and I have the evidence to prove it.”

Agent Kennedy paused as she quickly sorted out the papers that she was carrying as the entire court looked on in awe. They never understood whatever the heck that was going on. But either way, they were all very much curious and it went without saying that they clearly wanted to get to the bottom of it at the end of the day.

  “We are waiting agent.”

“Sorry sir, oh here it is. Jacob Thomas was a doctor before he got sued for malpractice. I guess we all already know that. But what we don’t know is that on that day, his brother took advantage of him having a personal emergency and came to hospital under the pretense of the good doctor and killed the patient. On that night, his brother was also out to kill another person when his brother intervened, but it was too late. So he took his clothes and led the police away from him. The reason why the defendant did this was because his brother is bipolar.

“The defendant has a twin. And on that day I carried out the arrest, he was wearing white sneakers. But in the footage, the person who killed the victim was swearing red white sneakers. I know that at the end of the day, all that might not mean anything alone. But it proves that I am right. And I had to do this because I can’t live with the fact that you are about to put an innocent person behind bars for a crime that his brother committed.”

There was silence in the courtroom for a little while and from the look of things, it seemed as though it had changed the gravity of everything. Jacob was silent. He wasn’t pleased alright, but he didn’t have a damn thing to say about the whole thing since the agent was right.

Agent Kennedy forwarded the new evidence to the judge who took some time to go through them as fast as possible and as soon as he had sorted out everything, the next thing for him to do was to go ahead and wait as the judge read it.

“Find the brother it is clear that he needs help. If the police will go through all of this and ascertai
n what agent Kennedy is saying, you will be a free man.”

Everyone seemed to be shocked by the new findings of the court but it was what it was. And from the look of things, it appeared as though Jacob Thomas had given up on trying to always take the fall for his twin. Agent Kennedy was right; it was about that time that they did something about finding him some help. Agent Kennedy was finally at peace and as soon as the court was dismissed, she left with a smile on her face.
