As she spoke Groves interrupted. “So, he is a tough son of a bitch. I already knew that!”
Jenkins stared back at him angrily.
“Shut up and listen. Jack has skills that cannot be taught. If there was ever a reincarnation of the devil, then Jack is it. He once spent four day torturing a terrorist after the London attacks. By the time he finished, we had more intel than we knew what to do with. He answers to no one, after a failed mission he even punched out an MI6 operative!”
Groves looked at Jenkins in shock.
“That explains why I could never beat him at poker!” he joked. “But if Jack was so valuable, why send him into London?”
Turner looked over at Jenkins.
“Good question,” Turner replied.
Jenkins smiled. “Because I wanted the bastard dead for what happened to my son. Jack left him to die, his best-friend and he left him to rot. That’s why I chose him!”
Turner slammed his fists onto the table. “Because of your pathetic wanting for revenge, Jack may now know everything.”
“Everything?” Groves asked.
Jenkins stayed silent.
Turner looked at Groves. “Are you in?”
Groves nodded his head. “Yeah, I’m in!”
Turner smiled and told his story. “There was no attack, the virus was a weapons test. Now you know what would happen if our allies knew we tested a weapon of such destruction, on our own people. Jack and his team were to find a Dr. Grant, the scientist who worked on the weapon. We needed him on our side, but he began broadcasting the truth. We needed to bring him home. The team, however, was never meant to survive. Those people in the cargo deck are a risk and must be kept quiet.”
Groves frowned. “But they are not infected!”
“But they know too much, they know about the zombies!” Turner replied.
“ZOMBIES!” Groves shouted out in shock.
Turner laughed. “Oh yes, zombies. I have arranged for a Dr. Rachael Horton to join us, she will be here within the hour. She is an expert and will discover if the survivors are infected and must be dealt with, is that understood?”
“Yes Sir!” Groves replied.
“Captain Jenkins, is there anything else we should know about Jack Mason?” Turner asked.
“Yes, if he knows the truth, he will come for us. He will expose us!” Jenkins replied.
Turner stood up. “Groves, do me favor and arrange a little missile launch to destroy the MI6 building in London would you!”
Groves agreed and left the room.
Turner looked at Jenkins. “You hate Jack, you should have said so. We could have had him killed.”
“If he was that easy to kill, I would have done it!” Jenkins replied angrily.
Turner walked towards the door. “We have twelve hours to clean up this mess, before the others takeover.”
Jenkins walked towards him and pushed the door shut again.
“I want to talk to the survivors. I need to know things, personal things.” Jenkins asked.
Turner smiled. “Need to know if Jack is infected, maybe you got lucky and some zombie took a bite out of him. Go ahead!”
“Thank you, Sir.”
CHAPTER THREE
DR HORTON
Inside the isolation tent, Henry was calming the children. All except Clare and Joe; they both looked deep in thought. They had both learned not to trust anyone. Every time a nurse came to draw their blood, they refused.
Henry watched carefully as many of the doctors were stopped from leaving the cargo deck. Deep down, Henry knew something was wrong here.
Lights began to flash again announcing another aircraft was approaching.
Within moments, Jenkins reappeared and approached the isolation tent. She walked toward a plastic door that once she was inside, would allow her to talk with the others safely. She indicated to Henry to come and talk to her.
There was a small red button attached to the microphone, Jenkins pressed it. “Hello, I am Captain Jenkins, but you can call me Samantha.”
“Henry. Sorry, no rank,” he joked.
Jenkins smiled. “Do you have everything you need?”
“Yes, but we’re not infected. We survived six months in hell, we don’t want to be in here.”
“I understand that. Really, I do. I need to ask you about Jack,” Jenkins said.
Before Henry could reply, Clare joined in.
“If he finds out you are treating us like this, he will kill you all!” Clare stated while she stared angrily at Jenkins.
Jenkins gave Clare a wide smile. “I bet he would!”
Henry looked around. “There is something wrong here. We were told we would be protected. Did Jack lie to us?”
Jenkins shook her head. “How much time did you spend with Jack?”
“Not much, he was busy killing those evil bastards that locked us up!”
Jenkins looked at him, in disgust. “What?”
“There are more survivors and they are worse than the fucking zombies; raping, killing, and doing all sorts of things to the children!”
A tear ran down Jenkin’s face.
“I promise, I will help you.” Jenkins told Henry.
Henry moved closer to the microphone, “I am not bothered about me, but the kids... they really need the help.”
Nodding her head, Jenkins turned and left. She watched as the main door opened and in walked Turner and a tall, slim, dark haired woman wearing glasses.
“This is Dr. Rachael Horton, she is here to clean things up.” Turner introduced her to Jenkins.
Jenkins shook her hand. “May I ask what the plan is?”
Dr. Horton smiled. “Simple, they are from the mainland and they are carrying the virus.”
Jenkins frowned. “How?”
Rachael lifted a small silver metallic case up in the air. “By giving it to them of course!”
Jenkins looked back at the children playing in the tent. She felt sick to her stomach.
Dr. Horton walked over to the main table, she quickly dismissed the other Doctors and Nurses who were led away. Jenkins followed them, with Turned at her side.
“Groves is handling the MI6 building and with any luck, all this will be a distant memory in a few hours!” Turner stated.
They followed the Doctors and Nurses into the hanger bay, where several handpicked soldiers waited.
“WHAT IS THIS?” One of the Doctors shouted.
Jenkins noticed Groves at the other side of the room. Groves dropped his arm down, giving the signal to fire. Within seconds all the Doctors and Nurses were dead. Blood soaked the hanger deck.
“That Groves is going places, I like him.” Turner remarked, as he walked away.
Jenkins quickly returned to the cargo deck, Rachael was already inside the isolation tent she laughed and joked as she injected the children. Looking around, Jenkins could see that no one else was around. She rushed for the tent, tearing the sealed door open.
“What are you doing? The infection will spread!” Rachael shouted.
Jenkins pulled her gun and shot Rachael in the head, killing her instantly.
She rushed to Henry. “Who was injected?”
“Everyone except me, Clare and Joe.” He replied in fear.
“Come with me, now!” Jenkins told Henry.
Jenkins led them to the table, she found the metal box Rachael had brought with her. She locked it back up and rushed towards the door. She stopped when Joe screamed.
Jenkins turned to see a young girl standing up from her bed, her eyes dead, blood pouring from her face.
“NOT AGAIN!” Henry shouted.
“We have to run!” Jenkins told him.
Locking the large metal door behind them, Groves appeared in front of them, asking, “What is going on?”
Jenkins had to think fast. “Dr. Horton dropped a vile and the virus is spreading throughout the ship.”
Groves was frozen to the spot when the others ran past him.
Jenkin
s led them into the ward room and locked the door behind them. Suddenly gun fire could be heard, followed by screams. Joe dropped to the floor covering his ears, Clare calmed him by cuddling him into her.
Henry looked at Jenkins. “WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?”
“What I feared would!” she replied.
Henry pulled his gun he still had and pointed it at Jenkins.
“Henry, I’m not the enemy!” she tried to reassure him.
“You sent the team to London, they sent us back to this!”
Jenkins sat down and placed her head in her hands. “The team didn’t know anything, I couldn’t tell them. But I needed to get Jack inside, he was the only one I could trust.”
“Jack knew all about it?” Henry asked.
Shaking her head. “NO! I knew he would figure it out and stay behind to help the survivors. I needed someone on the inside, someone to create hell and to scare the people who have done this. The truth is, I hated Jack for what happened to my son, but he was the best person for this job.”
“You played him, do you have any idea the things he did at the museum to save us!”
Jenkins stood up. “LOOK! Jack is a trained killer. The people that made all this happen are very powerful. I may be on the inside with them, but I needed to be smart, I needed him in England. He will create such a noise their attention will be on him and not me!”
“You fucking bitch!” Clare said.
More screams and banging echoed out.
“We need to get to the hanger deck, we need to get away from here,” Jenkins told them.
“Why should we trust you?” Clare asked.
“Because I know how to fly a helicopter!” Jenkins replied, as she held her gun with one hand and the metal case in the other.
“Let’s go!” she said as she opened the door.
Together they left the room.
CHAPTER FOUR
TRAITOR
The screams on the ship continued. Jenkins led the others along a corridor, the sudden sound of groaning echoed behind them. Henry turned to see a man in uniform, his eyes pale and blood pouring from his mouth. He gave out a screech and moved towards them, within moments dozens more appeared behind them.
Jenkins tried to open the door of the radio room, but it was locked from the inside. She banged on the door, demanding they open it. The zombies dragged themselves closer and closer.
Henry stepped away, shooting at the dead, hitting with every shot, but within moments, he was out of bullets. He looked round to see Clare holding Joe tightly, he looked over at Jenkins.
“Protect them, please for me!”
Jenkins frowned and nodded, she watched as Henry rushed into the hoarded of zombies dragging them to the ground. They watched as the zombies ripped the flesh from Henry’s body, with every scream he tried to fight back.
Suddenly the door opened, Jenkins rushed in with the kids. As the door slammed behind them, Jenkins was met with a gun to her face from Turner.
“What are they doing here?” Turner demanded.
“They escaped. Dr. Horton fucked up!” Jenkins replied in anger.
Turner lowered his gun and sat back in a large seat, one of his guards stood beside him.
“Looks as if we are stuck here?” Turner wondered.
The kids sat in the corner, out of earshot.
“We’re dead. They need to blow up the ship!” Jenkins stated.
“NO! I’m not going out like this!” Turner told her.
Jenkins looked around at the radios. “You think the bosses will help us?”
“I doubt it!” Turner replied.
“Turner, who are they, and why are you so scared of them?” Jenkins asked.
Looking at her he laughed. “You have no idea what the truth is, do you? They told you a pack of lies and you believed it. They live in safety, while us grunts risk our lives for scraps that they throw from the table!”
“LIES! THEY TOLD ME LIES?” Jenkins yelled.
Turner smiled. “You really think the outbreak was an accident! A failed experiment, it was planned!”
Jenkins went as white as a ghost. Her mind was swimming though the lies.
“Who are they?” she asked.
“No idea!” Turner replied.
“Where are they?” she asked.
“In the south; all I know is ‘Oasis’. Just one little name, that’s it,” he replied.
While Jenkins got her bearings, she looked scared, and then a sudden gunshot echoed loudly. Jenkins looked up to see Turner’s guard had shot him in the head.
“WHY?!” She screamed.
“Orders,” He said calmly, as he placed the gun against his head and fired again.
The kids screamed as blood sprayed all over them. Jenkins rushed over to comfort them.
“It’s OK! We are safe in here,” she said softly.
For hours, she held them. Gunfire, screaming, and the groaning of the dead continued to echo out.
The kids were finally asleep. Jenkins stared at the dead bodies when a sudden static noise sounded from the radio.
Jenkins rushed to the terminal; blood and brain matter covered the computers. The signal was scrambled, she attempted to tune it in, but only heard one thing at the end.
“Jack Mason is dead, we need to talk!”
Jenkins closed her eyes and slammed down on the terminal. “NO!” She cried out.
She fell to her knees crying, when Clare and Joe appeared and placed their arms around her to comfort her.
“It’s OK, we will be OK!” Clare whispered to her. Jenkins cried into the children’s shoulders.
CHAPTER FIVE
I’M IN CHARGE NOW!
Groves stood on deck, firing his gun, the horde of the dead were slowly being stopped. Bodies fell overboard, the living kicking the dead over the side of the ship in an attempt to retake the ship.
With the deck, clear Grove shouted out his orders.
“OK, CLEAR THE SHIP, ONE DECK AT A TIME!”
Below Jenkins waited, nothing had been heard for hours. She cracked the door open to see blood covered walls and bodies piled up with half their heads missing.
“Come on, stay close to me!” as Jenkins led the children out, still carrying the metal case. They reached a ladder and slowly climbed up towards the hatch. It suddenly opened, with another gun pointed at her she looked at Groves.
“Nice to see you made it!” Jenkins said.
“And you, Captain!” Groves replied.
Groves noticed the children. “Captain, the children, are they still alive?”
Jenkins looked back at them.
“Yes they are, and that is how it will stay. I am going to need leverage against Jack, and they are it!”
Groves smiled and tilted his head.
“We will be leaving immediately! I want to get this to where it belongs,” Jenkins held up the metal case.
“I can arrange a pilot!” Groves replied.
“No need, I can fly it myself!” Jenkins said, as she walked off towards the helicopter.
Strapping the children onboard, Jenkins whispered to them.
“Now, I need you both to listen to me. We are going to a base in France. When we get there, you are my niece and nephew who were onboard this ship waiting for me to pick you up. You were never in England, and you don’t know Jack!”
Clare looked at her and asked, “We have to lie?”
“Yes, for now. I need to complete a special project and this case will help me do that. Will you both help me?” Jenkins asked Clare and Joe.
Both kids nodded.
Jenkins climbed onboard the helicopter and began to power it up.
Groves was standing on the flight deck, when a soldier ran up to him holding a radio.
“Sir, priority message for you!”
Groves took the radio.
“Commander Groves, I have been informed you are joining us here at Oasis.”
“Yes sir!”
“What is the situation with Capt
ain Jenkins?”
“She is leaving now!”
“NEGATIVE! SHE MUST NOT LEAVE IS THAT UNDERSTOOD?”
“YES SIR!” Groves replied.
“Welcome to Oasis Commander!”
Setting the radio down, he pulled his gun and began to fire at the Helicopter. Jenkins turned to see Groves shooting at them.
“Then it begins, Oasis, I’m coming for you!” Jenkins promised.
Jenkins flew the helicopter up off the pad, a bullet hitting the rear and smoke blew out. Alarms went off in the cockpit, but Jenkins managed to keep the helicopter up and fly it out away from the ship.
Groves stood on the deck of the ship looking out over the ocean. He watched the smoke trail of the helicopter.
“They won’t make it far,” he muttered to himself.
Over the ocean, Jenkins changed her heading, with her headset on she adjusted the signal.
“Cruise Liner Oceana, can you read me?”
A moment of static sounded out.
“IT’S A HOT DAY TODAY!” A voice replied.
Jenkins smiled.
“YES, WE CAN GET BURNT WITH ALL THIS RAIN!”
The children listened confused.
“It’s OK! We are going to meet the good guys, they will help us!”
The radio voice replied and asked, “What is your time?”
“About twelve minutes out, suggest moving destination once on-board!” Jenkins replied.
“Agreed! Have we been compromised?”
“I have, but I have a gift. On my arrival, I need to speak with Adam!” Jenkins replied.
“We await your arrival!”
Jenkins smiled. “It’s okay kids, we’re going home!”
