“Yes, doctor. We’re all in his room.” Andy hung up. “Jeb’s doctor is coming to see us. Not the surgeon, but the specialist in pulmonology that he saw here in Houston, Dr. Saavy.”

“He’s the one I recommended. He’s good,” Chandler said.

“I hope what he told us was right,” Sunn’s mother said. “He said the tumor might be benign.”

A tall man, with black hair streaked with gray, knocked on the doorsill.

“Come in, Dr. Saavy.” Sunn’s mother rose to greet him. “How is Jeb doing?”

“Very good, the tumor was benign and Dr. Ackerman is removing it. But your husband got lucky. He must stop smoking.”

“Don’t worry, he will. We’ve already discussed that if he was saved this time he wouldn’t gamble with his health.”

Dr. Saavy smiled. “Then my work is done. I’d like to check him every six months. If he does have another problem we’ll catch it quick and get it removed.”

“We’re moving to North Carolina for six months out of the year. As soon as we return to Texas, we’ll call and set up an appointment to see you.”

“Maybe you’d like to know I’ve heard some interesting gossip about your town from my secretary’s sister. She’s a journalist, but works on her own. She has some crazy idea that a portion of your town consists of threesome couples. She’ll be arriving soon to discover the truth and write about it. He glanced at Andy and Sunn’s mother. “Be careful, if you don’t want unpleasant notoriety.”

“Thanks, Dr. Saavy. We’ll be on the lookout.” Andy shook his hand. “If you get a chance, come visit us.”

“I might. My friend here”— he nodded at Chandler—“is making a drastic move and leaving Houston. I have to see what the draw is in a little known town.”

Dr. Saavy walked to the door. “He’ll be out of surgery before long and in the recovery room. His surgeon will come out and speak with you.” He waved and walked off.

“I don’t like the sound of someone snooping around our town,” Andy said. “I’ll contact the sheriff to watch for a woman traveling alone. We’ll stop her before she ruins our way of life.”

“What will you do, Dad?” Sunn asked.

He grinned. “I’ll introduce her to some of our new cowboys in town. Maybe she’ll fall in love, see how good our way of life is, and forget about her article.”

“I hope you are right, Andy,” Chandler said. “But most newswomen are impervious to romance when they’re after a hot story.”

  Chapter Seven

When Sunn stood, her knees were weak from relief about her dad, Jeb’s prognosis. Her mother reacted by turning into Andy’s arms and crying.

Chandler hugged Sunn. “Go back to my condo with me. We’ll have a drink and order food in.”

“I need to stay with my mother.”

“No.” Her mother wiped her eyes with Andy’s handkerchief. “I was upset earlier. I’m sorry I got angry with you. I love you, and I know you love your fathers. Go with Chandler and relax. I’ll call you when Jeb gets to a room. You can come see him then.”

“I’m sorry, Mom.” Sunn hugged her mother. They stood with their arms around each other while healing tears ran down both their faces.

“That’s enough.” Andy pulled Sunn’s mother back and Chandler took Sunn’s hand.

“Let’s go celebrate your father getting well and not having to deal with a more serious illness.” Chandler waved to Andy and Sunn’s Mom as he led Sunn out.

They rode down the elevator to the underground garage and the reserved spaces for physicians. Chandler opened the door to a silver Lexus. Sunn sank into soft, leather seats.

He was a good driver. Sunn relaxed and gazed out at the city. A few blocks away, he turned at a side street and into the entrance to an underground garage. He slid a card in to open the gate. His space was right next to the elevator on the left.

Chandler helped her out, and then used his key to unlock the elevator door. It opened and with his hand at her elbow they stepped in.

  “You have your personal elevator?”

“I share it with three others. The top two floors have a total of four penthouses. I’m one of the top ones.”

“With this location it must have cost you a bundle.”

“It’s worth it. I’m close to the hospital and up high enough to have a great view. When I want to go out, I can grab a cab if I don’t want to drive.”

She stepped into a foyer done in dark blue and cream colors. He locked the elevator door, and then opened double cherry-wood doors. Sunn walked into a large living room with an equally big dining room off to the left.

“Wow, the apartment I had here in Houston would fit in these two rooms.”

“I wish I’d known you were working here. But I was so busy I seldom visited Saddlespurs to hear the news.”

  “Has business slowed down?”

“No, but I’ve taken in a partner. He’ll see the new patients. Most of the ones who insist on seeing me will fly to my office in Saddlespurs. I expect I’ll have to see a few patients in the city.”

“You’re taking a gamble. I might decide I don’t want to marry you and Todd. If he still wants to get married.”

“Did Todd tell you about his youth?”

“Some, but I’m sure not all. I said words that hurt him. My mouth sometimes gets ahead of my brain.”

“He’ll get over it. He’s worried about whether he’s capable of loving you like you deserve and any children we may have. I’m sure he can, but he doesn’t have that confidence yet.”

Chandler walked her into his study and went to the side bar. “What do you want to drink?”

“A rose wine, if you have it.”

“I do.” He pulled a bottle out of the fridge. “I was hoping to get you to come home with me. I put in red, rose, and white wine.” He handed her a crystal glass with the chilled wine. Then he brought a tray of hors d’oeuvres and sat them on the table beside her. “My housekeeper fixed these for me. I told her I might have a guest.”

“They look delicious.” Sunn chose a shrimp wrapped in bacon. She was hungrier than she’d thought and soon had eaten three or four of each variety of canapés.

“Leave room for dinner. Since you’re going back to see your father, we can eat in or go to a restaurant.”

“Can you get pizza delivery in such a swanky place?”

“A woman after my own heart, and yes, the doorman will bring it up.”

“Then I’d like a vegetable pizza.”

“I’ll order you a small one and a medium with everything on it for me. There’ll be some left for a snack.”

Sunn gazed at his tall, muscled, but lean body. “You must work out.”

“I exercise at least every other day. I enjoy it. It gives me time to think and keeps me in shape.”

“I like to walk at home. There’s a run-walk path near my apartment. I get up early and hike a few miles.”

“When we get back, I’ll join you.”

She didn’t comment. Chandler sat close beside her. He put down his bourbon glass and openly studied her, while she twisted in her seat.

“Why do I make you nervous?”

  “You don’t.”

One eyebrow raised a fraction. “You act like I do.” Reaching out he ran a fingertip along the side of her face then across her slightly pointed chin. “I get a kick out of seeing you raise your chin defiantly. You aren’t a pushover.”

“I’m definitely not, and you and Todd better not forget it.”

“We want our wife to stand up for herself. It gives spice to a relationship.” His expression stilled. “I’m sure Todd has told you what fools we were when we walked off and returned to Houston.

“I didn’t trust my instincts after the divorce I’d gone through. It was too soon for me. And yet, although I dated a number of women afterward, none of them were you. I seldom dated them more than once or at the most twice. Finally, I gave up and concentrated on work.”

  Sunn put he
r hand on his cheek where his five o’clock shadow made him look sexier. “I’ve done the same.”

“When we saw you at the wedding, we both knew you were the one we wanted, and we’d better hurry or we’d lose you.”

“Todd said the same thing, but he hasn’t had a bad divorce as an excuse.”

“He has a better excuse. His mother left him, and he was moved frequently between foster homes. I’m sure he acted out, but with love and a steady hand one of them might have made a difference in his life.”

“He did mention moving amongst foster homes. I’m going to call the hospital. Why don’t you order our pizza, and while we eat you can tell me about your family.”

“It’s a deal.” Chandler took out his phone and Sunn took hers and stood at the window. The city lights had come on.

  “Mom, how is Dad?”

“The surgeon was just here. He took us into the recovery room. Jeb is drunk on drugs, but he grinned at us. The doctor said he should be okay if he stops smoking.”

“When will he go to a room?”

“In about thirty minutes. He’ll be in Room 805.”

“We’re going to eat, and then Chandler will drive me to the hospital.”

“Don’t rush. We’ll see you when you get here.”

“The pizza will arrive in about thirty minutes. So we have a spare half hour,” Chandler spoke as he entered the room.

“What do you suggest?” Sunn asked.

His brilliant blue eyes were fixed on her. “I’d like to show you my master suite.”

  “Is it nice?”

“Spectacular.” He took slow steps toward her.

Her heart raced as he got closer. His musky scent aroused her desire and heat flashed in her abdomen.

Chandler picked her up in his arms. “You can tell me to stop any time, but honey, I want you bad.” He strode down a hallway to the end and kicked open the door.

Sunn looked around. They entered a portion of the room that had chairs and a table set in front of large windows. On the opposite side of the bedroom, a large television hung on the wall. And to the right of the door where they entered was a fireplace.

Then Chandler took a step down and walked to the king-size bed. He let her body slide along his until her feet touched the plush gray carpet. Light-blue walls gave an ambiance of restfulness. Chandler whipped the blue-and-gray comforter back and out of a drawer in the bedside table, he got a condom and placed the package on the tabletop.

“All I need to do is take your clothes off.”

  “How about yours?”

“I’m leaving them for you.” Chandler unbuttoned her blouse and unsnapped her bra. He stepped back to admire her breasts. Then he reached for the scarf and band holding her hair back and watched as it fell around her shoulders and her back.

  “My golden goddess.”

Laughing, Sunn undid Chandler’s shirt and pushed it off. His broad, tanned chest had dark hair across it and a line of hair disappeared under his waistband. She unfastened his thin, black belt and unbuttoned his pants. He took over and kicked his shoes off before removing his pants and underwear. Then he held out the condom to Sunn.

His tall, lean body made her mouth water. He had a wide chest, a tight six-pack, and long, muscular legs. She took the condom from him. When she started to roll it on his cock, she heard the hitch in his breath. She glanced at his face and his blue eyes flashed with an inner fire.

As soon as she’d finished, he helped her remove the rest of her clothes. “Now I get to look at you. Compared to me, honey, you’re tiny.” He cupped her face and kissed her gently. Gradually the kiss deepened and his tongue slipped inside to tangle with hers. He pulled her body tight against his. His hard cock jerked when it came in contact with her stomach.

“He’s hungry for you,” Chandler whispered in her ear.

Sunn put her arms around his neck and nibbled at his earlobe. “I want to feel him deep inside me.”

“Not before we have some fun.” He lifted her and threw her to the middle of the bed, and then he followed her down. His body lay over hers. “I have you at my mercy.”

She bucked suddenly and threw herself against him. Chandler rolled and she was on top. He grinned. “I like this, too.” Being stronger he soon had regained his position.

He moved down and kissed her peaked nipples, and then he ran his tongue around each one. His hands cupped her breasts. “They’re soft, tasty, and you smell delicious.”

Chandler kissed her midriff, her abdomen, and his nose brushed across her mound before he parted her lower lips. He caressed her clit with his tongue. Her body arched closer to him. Her pussy throbbed with hunger and her juices flowed out.

“You taste wonderful and smell like raspberry.” Without stopping, he continued his exploration of her body. His lips kissed the inside of each thigh and a sensitive spot behind her knee. He rubbed his hands over her lower legs and feet.

Her heart fluttered in her chest as he stoked the growing fire in her core. She squirmed under his intent gaze.

“I can’t get enough of you.” He worked his way back to her lower lips, and while his tongue worked magic against her clit and along her labia, his fingers rubbed across her nipples.

A zing of pleasurable delight went up her spine. Her legs parted further when all her muscles lost the tension she’d been carrying all day. She wanted to touch him. She reached out and ran her fingers through his thick, black hair.

Chandler raised his head and his eyes smoldered with satisfaction. Her breath quickened when he put his cock at her pussy opening. He rose over her like a warrior of old taking control of his conquest. His dark-blue eyes shimmered in the light from the bedside lamp.

“I want you and need you.” His voice sounded husky to her ears.

Then he thrust into her pussy, stretching the walls to their fullest. Her pussy pulsed against his throbbing cock. A salacious shiver sparked a need deep inside her. She took him in further, and her pussy walls tightened around his dick.

“Ah, baby, that sent a shot of euphoria straight to my brain.”

Chandler took hold of her hips and pulled them up. He plunged in and out of her pussy until she made a keening sound. He thrust once more against her womb and held tight as her pussy rippled around him. She screamed his name and after a few more thrusts his cock made spasmodic movements taking her up on a wave of bliss and over.

He kissed her mouth before rolling to the side. Chandler had hardly caught his breath when the phone rang. “Good, just leave it at my front door. I’ll leave the money out.”

Sunn watched as he grabbed his pants, took out money and raced off. She got up and walked to a closed door that she hoped was a bathroom. It was. A huge shower took up one end, and then there was the Jacuzzi-type tub, and two sinks, with the toilet in a small room off the rest of the bath. The colors were a deep maroon and white.

“I see you found the bathroom.” Chandler walked behind her and circled his arms around her waist. “I’d love to play in the shower, but the pizza has arrived. I’ll grab my robe out of the closet for you.”

“I have to take a shower and dress. If we don’t go to the hospital soon, I’ll miss seeing my mom and dads.”

He glanced at his watch. “I’m afraid you’re right. We’ll leave the shower play for later. I’ll get our dinner on plates and pour our tea while you shower. Then I’ll get a quick one while you clean up the kitchen.”

She grinned. “You mean throw away our pizza box?”

“That and our paper plates and cups.”

He left and she showered quickly and redressed. She glanced at the bed on her way out. The feelings he and Todd brought out in her when they made love were different, more intense than any she’d felt before. In spite of trying to go slow, her heart was jumping right in and opening itself to possible hurt. But it was like a roller coaster. Once it started, you had to ride it to the end.

  Chapter Eight

Todd arrived at the ranch after dark. He open
ed the door and someone spoke.

“Halt.” Lann rose with a rifle in his hands and snapped on his flashlight. “Damn, what are you doing here? I might have shot you or one of the other men could have.”

  “I want to help.”

Lann gave him a close look, but didn’t comment. He clicked off his light. They sat on the floor and looked out the window. “We haven’t seen or heard anything yet. Your arrival may make them draw back.”

“My truck is parked off the road about a mile away. I walked and came to the house from the back.”

“You didn’t see or hear anyone?”

  “Nope.”

“They may…” Lann’s phone buzzed. “Yeah, you’re sure? I’m coming your way and Todd Carrigan will be with me. That’s right.”

Lann stood. “We’re going to walk a roundabout way to the east side. My men have surrounded a group of thugs sitting at a campfire.”

“They may not be the ones.”

“We’ll see.” Lann led the way and walked fast. Todd kept up with him easily. Todd had always had good night vision and easily spotted where they were headed. When they joined Lann’s men, Ladd gave him a funny glance, but he didn’t comment.

Sheriff Devon and his men had joined the group. He walked over to Lann. “We’ll step in first with your group as back-up.”

  “No problem,” Lann said.

As quietly as possible they all moved forward. When they got closer, Todd heard their voices.

“You two take the house and barn on this property,” a man’s voice said. “And you three go to the other ranch. Burn everything,” the man snapped.

“I’d reconsider those orders,” Sheriff Devon stepped forward with his deputies and surrounded the group. “Drop your guns.”

One of the men swung around and took a quick shot at the ones surrounding them. Then the others joined in. Bullets flew around the circle. But almost immediately the men were disarmed. Several were shot in the hand and two were more seriously wounded.

Lann and his men came forward and gathered the dropped pistols and rifles. “You and your men did good work, Sheriff.”
