The Need for Fear Page 7

by Oisin McGann

His hands were still shaking as he shrugged the strap of the case onto his shoulder. He was finished with this stupid business. The first chance he’d had to do something real and he’d folded because he didn’t have the balls to stand up for his principles, and had been manipulated like some innocent rather than the savvy operator he thought he was. No, he knew when he was beaten.

Looking for a street sign, he tried to figure out where he was and how to get to the nearest Tube station. He wanted to go home and watch a movie, order a pizza, and maybe get drunk. Tomorrow, he was going to go looking for a proper job. As he pulled his phone out of his pocket to check the time, it started ringing, making him jump. Jesus, his nerves were in tatters. For a moment he was afraid it might be Robert, or even the taxi driver, but instead, it was a friend of his, a fellow Truth-seeker named Nexus.

“Nex, hey … hey man. Good to hear from you. What’s happening? What? No, no, I’m good, just fine. I was just running to catch a bus. Missed it anyway. What’s that? Eh … look, I dunno man, I’m not really doing that kind of thing anymore. I’ve decided to … Yeah? Really?”

Tucking his phone between cheek and shoulder, Chi took out his notebook and pen and scrawled down the words “UFO spotted over Hainault Forest.” He gazed at them for a second, chewing his lip. Then, taking his phone in hand again, he perched on a concrete post and held the pen poised over the paper.

“Okay,” he said. “Tell me more.”
