Her Brave Wolf

“You fucking lay a finger on my mate and I will bite your Berserker head off,” Nick threatened. He felt his wolf in his teeth and in his eyes, but he refused to shift. He was driving, damn it.
“Seriously,” Max protested weakly. “I-I have no idea what’s going on or why I let two strangers put me in their truck almost completely naked. Am I getting shanghaied?”
“Shhh,” Gwen hushed him sweetly. “We’re only helping. If you were in that restaurant with your girlfriend and you suddenly shifted into a wolf, you don’t think that’d go over well, do you?”
“I can’t be a wolf!” he said hysterically. “I was passing out. I drank too much or something. I don’t know!”
His hysteria was enough to call back the Berserker nature of his wolf. Nick kept glancing at him in his rearview mirror.
“Gwen,” Nick warned.
“Just drive,” she said calmly. She placed her hand on Max’s back as he was fighting the shift. “Call your girlfriend. Tell her you had a family emergency and that you’ll be away for a few days, okay?”
Somehow, she got him to chill out again. She was good at appealing to his human side. She gently handed him his cell phone. He shook as he tapped the phone’s screen, and he continued to shake as he brought it up to his ear.
Nick tuned out most of the conversation. He got that Max bailed for the “bathroom” before the mess he caused at someone else’s table. He also got that his girlfriend bought the family emergency story. That was all he needed to know. What he needed to spend his time thinking on now was how to solve this problem. Yeah, he and his pack would do their best to help this wild wolf out, but just how much work that entailed, he had no idea. From what Willow said on the phone, plenty more wolves like Max would be joining them soon enough. He hoped he was up for this. His mate seemed to be. Maybe that would be enough.
“Nick.”
He looked in his rearview mirror where Gwen caught his eye.
“Everything is going to work out, and I’m going to be right there by your side.”
That was all he could ask for. And he knew it was enough.
