“Mom,” I moan. “We’re not going very far and I’m going to be with Mercedes and Timber and Grove. What could happen?”
“Well, you have to watch out for Briar,” she says. “This is all new for her.”
“I know,” I tell her, trying not to roll my eyes.
She sighs and puts her hands on my shoulders. “I’m proud of you, Zephyr,” she says.
“For what?” I ask, totally confused now.
“For coming here, to Brooklyn, and trying new things and making friends and showing me that we can have a life outside of Alverland.”
“Wow, Mom,” I say. “Thanks. That was actually really cool of you to say.”
She pulls me into a hug. “You have nice friends, Zephyr,” she tells me and I smile up at her. She lets go. “So have fun.”
I wave and turn to join my friends out on our walk. “I will!”
“And remember.” Then she grabs my arm and pulls me back to her quickly. “No matter what else happens . . . no magic in Brooklyn!”
