“That’s right!” Missy’s face lights up. In truth, she hasn’t stopped glowing for the last nine months. “Noel has a brand new baby sister.” She curls her finger over the baby’s precious chin. “You know, we have to give her a name.”
A dull moan comes from me. Missy and I have hit a dead end each time we’ve tried to come up with something. “Now that she’s here, I’m sure we’ll figure it out pretty quickly. I mean, she looks like she could be a—” I pause because I have no clue where I’m going with this. Her cute button nose and sleepy eyes have already wrapped themselves around my heart. And that shock of dark hair made Missy coo with delight as soon as she saw it.
Missy takes a deep breath. “She was born on Christmas. How about something holiday related?” She looks up at me.
“Holiday Holiday.” We both shake our heads, shooting down my idea at once. “I don’t know. What about days of the week or months or birthstones?”
“Well, it’s Tuesday. That’s cute, but it just doesn’t fit. It is December?” She shrugs up at me, and both our eyes light up at once. “December,” she coos down at the sleeping angel in her arms. “We can call her Ember for short. I love that so much, do you?” Tears swell in her eyes as she looks to me, and I nod.
“December it is.”
“And we know the middle name.” Missy reaches over and pulls my arm around her and the baby. Missy and I decided firmly that whatever gender our child would be, we would give him or her our parents’ first names as their middle name. Her mother’s if it was a girl, and my father’s if it was a boy. And with our next child, we’ll do the same. Missy and I plan on having quite the brood, at least three, but Missy insists it’s more like four. “December Joy Holiday.”
“That sounds just perfect. I love you, Missy. And I love you, sweet December.”
A gentle knock comes over the door as Holly peeks her head in, and soon the room is filled with our loved ones all gathered around to marvel at our tiny bundle of December joy. One by one, they congratulate us, and the love brimming in this room makes it feel like Christmas.
Missy and I hold our baby tight long into the night.
Missy looks to me with sleepy eyes as the sun breaks free on this Christmas morning. “How are we ever going to top this next year?”
I give a light chuckle. “I guess we’ll have to have twins.”
Missy’s mouth falls open. “You do realize that the first wish you make on Christmas morning will inevitably come true.”
“So, you’re saying I should have asked for triplets?”
She looks as if she’d like to swat me, but she’s too exhausted to execute the idea.
“I guess that means we’ll be growing our brood faster than we thought.” She bites down on a smile.
“I couldn’t think of a better person to do just that with.”
“Me either. Merry Christmas, Graham.”
“Merry Christmas, Missy.”
And just like that, we arrive at our happily ever after with no end to the joy in sight. Just the way we like it.
I knew something was missing in my life right up until I set foot back in Gingerbread.
It turns out, all I needed was a little Mistletoe.
