“I know of one,” I answered before Geoffrey's computer voice could reply, and I tugged Raevu toward our bedroom.

  Eva

Brother Estijen had his hands full. I didn’t feel the least bit sorry for him. He’d volunteered for this duty. I rubbed my hands over the ripples of my distended belly and spoke softly, “Quiet, Eavon, you’ll be out here with your sisters soon enough.”

The little guy wasn’t even born yet, but he already took after his father. He was strong, had really big feet, and didn’t know when to quit his fussing. “Ugh! Eavon, stop kicking my bladder!” His frequent kicks and nights of no sleep were definitely some of the hazards of having a house full of kids.

Raevu was ridiculously happy about having a son given how common they were on Juhl. He loved his beautiful daughters, but he had wanted a boy. Now, we just had to wait for the little guy to arrive any day now.

I smoothed my hands over my belly. The fabric of the deep blue dress—an exact copy of the dress that Ivy had found for me to wear that day I vied for entry into the Peace Opportunity Program—felt silky. The garment was a sweet reminder of Earth and how different my life was now. I smiled, remembering when I’d told Raevu about the dress and how much I missed it. He’d immediately contacted the Peace Program officials, demanding that they find the garment. When they couldn’t locate it, he’d done the next best thing. With Ivy’s design help, he found someone on Earth to make an exact replica—with alterations to accommodate my pregnant belly—of the dress. Tears came to my eyes just remembering the night he’d surprised me with the dress as a gift. The gesture was sweet and unexpected…just like my alien life mate.

My thoughts snapped back to the present. Brother Estijen was trying to teach our four-year-old twins, Flora and Willow, and five-year-old Hope how to plant a Sopu seedling in the pocket the Tovari tree had created for it. They sometimes giggled and got distracted, but he quickly redirected their attention back to the task at hand.

I wasn’t startled when I felt Raevu drape his arm around my shoulder, letting his hand rest on the sigil that marked me as his life mate. A thrill, as always, ran through me when he made that casual motion. “Hello, love. So, how many trees does this make?”

I tilted my head back to look at him. “In the palace community, or in general?”

  “Both.” He kissed my forehead.

I laughed. “I don’t know the count for ‘in general,’ and you know it. Once Geoffrey, Linnea, and I figured out it was the Tree Blight that had killed so many Sopu trees, which, in turn, affected your female birth rates, it became easy to convince people to plant the seedlings. After all, even if we were wrong, they’re beautiful trees and give off a wonderful fragrance.” I leaned into his side. “But this makes number thirty-seven in the palace community.”

Raevu’s eyes glowed yellow for a moment, shooting sparks of desire through me. “You weren’t wrong. At last count, in the areas where Sopu trees are planted and flourishing, female births are increasing. Between bringing human women here to give us a boost and planting our trees, you saved us, my queen. You saved me.” He leaned down and kissed me.

His lips lingered on mine before our daughters spotted him. “Daddy! Daddy! Come help us plant trees.”

He gave them a mock frown. “Don’t you see me kissing Mommy?”

“You’re always kissing her,” Willow said, then giggled.

He kissed my nose. “To be continued, my Eva,” he promised before walking over to his precious, beautiful daughters.

I watched his big frame crouching down as Willow jumped onto his back, and he laughed.

I smiled, filled with love for my family.

It had taken a lot of work and many leaps of faith to get here. But now, I knew for certain that it had all been worth it…for love, hope, and my alien life mate, Raevu.
