On the other hand, and maybe because there are only a few black-and-white photos of me as a kid, remembering the past events in this memoir often took on a magical quality. I’m sure I remember occurrences I couldn’t possibly have known about because I was simply too young. I was positive parties happened in one apartment only to discover, after chatting with relatives, that the gathering had happened in another, and remembering family situations with my siblings was cause for both sadness and hilarity as we recollected the same events differently.
So if I’ve learned anything from writing this memoir, it is mostly this: Though lives are made up of real events as sure as a television taping or a black-and-white photo, lives are more often shaped and colored by how we remember those events and the series of feelings that went along with them.
