“Well, how did you do it?” Mengele asked in frustration.
“The first time was an accident, a wormhole just kind of appeared and I went through it.”
“So from which time did you come from?”
“The early 21st century.”
Mengele smiled. “Incredible, and you arrived here?”
“No, I travelled to the day that Abraham Lincoln died, and I lived in America until 1969. I was then sent here.”
“I have a way for you to save your life, and the lives of your cell mates.” Mengele stated.
“What would that be?”
“I want you to build me a machine that will allow me to travel through time.”
“Why?”
“To help win the war.”
Bobby considered Mengele’s proposal. If he was honest, he would much rather die than do anything to help the Nazi cause. But he wouldn’t actually be doing anything to help them and he might just be able to save Will and Emmerich.
“I would need my cane back and I would need some sort of decent living accommodation.”
“Of course, you would no longer be a prisoner, more of a contractor, but you would not be allowed to leave until the machine has been built. What will you need?” Mengele asked.
Bobby had no idea how to respond to that question. “I will need my clothes back.”
“I meant in the way of materials?” Mengele asked.
“I want my cane back.” Bobby stated.
Mengele chuckled. “I can’t promise that. The tip is solid gold, incredibly valuable.”
“Yes, I know. It’s mine.” Bobby snapped.
Mengele just stared. “Very well. What materials will you need?”
“Okay, well quite a lot of things really.” Bobby replied vaguely.
“Such as?”
“Metal.”
Mengele removed a piece of paper and a pen from his pocket, before scribbling down Bobby’s requests.
“A clock. Some wood, coal.” He paused, having no clue what to say.
“Some tools, a hammer, knife that sort of thing.”
“A knife?” Mengele repeated.
“Yes, and saws.”
Mengele nodded. “Anything else.”
“Have you a car we can use, we will need an engine.” Bobby asked hopefully.
“I can get you an engine.” Mengele replied suspiciously.
“Well, I was going to turn the car into a time machine.”
“How would you do that?”
Bobby thought back to any story he had read or seen as a child and Back to the Future came to his mind. “I will need to build a Flux Capacitor.”
“A Flux Capacitor?” Mengele asked, almost sounding impressed.
“Indeed.” Bobby replied feeling a little more confident now. “Yes the Flux Capacitor is what makes time travel possible, it allows us to access the fourth dimension.”
“Incredible.”
“Yes, it will not be an overnight job you understand.” Bobby replied.
“How long will it take?”
“Perhaps a year.”
“A year!” Mengele yelled. “That is far too long!”
“Well, what I can do, is build it and then bring it back to today.”
“Well then wouldn’t it be here?” Mengele asked.
“No because this is the first time this has happened.”
“Well, if you do that, then how will I get the time machine?”
“Well, I could build it and then you can bring it back.” Bobby suggested.
Mengele nodded. “You have six months.”
Bobby nodded. “I will need help.”
“I am a little busy.”
“I was referring to my cell mates. They could help me, I want the same conditions for them, better clothing, food and accommodation.”
Mengele stared at Bobby, clearly irritated. “Fine.”
“What about Emmerich’s wife and child?” Bobby asked.
“Who is Emmerich?” Mengele asked.
“The German man in my cell.” Bobby replied.
“Oh yes. His wife and child were killed upon arrival.” Mengele spoke without the slightest hint of care.
Bobby sighed, he had been expecting that. “So we have a deal?”
“Yes.”
“And you guarantee that neither Will nor Emmerich will come to any harm?”
“You have my word.”
Chapter 21
They appeared in an empty living room, it was huge. A swastika hung on one wall and a portrait of Adolf Hitler was on another. The furniture looked incredibly expensive, the room was painted green. There was a large mahogany desk in the right-hand corner of the room beside a large window, which looked out on a well-kept garden.
Directly across from the wall with the windows, was a wall that was taken up with a large fireplace. The floors were wooden and the couch matched the green walls. As everyone arrived in the room, it suddenly didn’t look as big as it once had. Clyde put down the two suitcases with the guns inside them.
“Wernher, you lived like a king.” Sarah said in amazement.
Wernher looked incredibly embarrassed by the room.
“I thought you were just a scientist Wernher. The swastika and the portrait of Hitler show that you may not have been as innocent as you claimed.” Jacob chuckled at his own statement.
“I had to look like I supported him.” Wernher snapped.
“Even in your living room?” Chase asked.
“I would often have to host prominent party members.” Wernher spoke defensively.
“Who is the guy in the frame?” Bonnie asked.
“Adolf Hitler, the most evil man in history.” Chase replied.
Bonnie nodded, not quite understanding.
“It’s a beautiful place.” Clyde interjected. “I’ve never been anywhere like this before.”
“You should be thankful of that.” Jacob chuckled.
“Remember I am doing you a favour.” Wernher snapped.
Jacob stared at Wernher. “You are doing this in order to keep your life.”
“Wernher, when will your younger self be here?” Edward asked, glancing at his watch anxiously.
“It was different every day.” Wernher replied.
“Well today is May 28th, 1943, any ideas?”
“No.”
“It is 17:00, will you be much later?” Chase asked.
“I don’t know!” Wernher snapped.
Jacob glowered at him.
“What?” Wernher snapped again.
“You should watch how you speak to me Wernher.”
“You need my help, what are you going to do?”
“I could kill you when I’m done with you.”
Wernher blushed.
“We are a team! You don’t turn on your team!” Clyde barked.
“Let’s get one thing straight. I am in charge Clyde, this isn’t the Barrow Gang. I could kill anyone of you, so watch who you talk to like that. All of you!” Jacob snarled.
Chase could see the fear on both of the scientist's faces, Bonnie and Clyde didn’t look as though anything could scare them.
Clyde hobbled towards Jacob and stood inches from him. “You may scare the rest of them, but you sure as shit don’t scare me.”
“You would probably crumble if I stamped on your foot.” Jacob laughed into Clyde’s face, Clyde threw a punch that to Chase’s surprise connected with Jacob’s cheek, causing some blood to fly from his mouth. Jacob grabbed Clyde but before he could do anything, Bonnie hit him with a vase that had been sat on the desk. Jacob managed to stay on his feet, but Clyde punched him again knocking him to the ground.
Clyde’s eyes were like a demons but before he could continue the assault, the door of the living room was opened and a young Wernher Von Braun, dressed in full Nazi uniform entered the room.
He stared in amazement at the crowd of people in his living room before shouting something in German.
The older Wernher Von Br
aun walked towards him and also spoke in German. The younger Wernher looked confused at his older self. Nobody else could make out what was being said.
“Do you speak English?” Chase asked.
“Yes.” The young Wernher replied.
“We are from the future and we need your help.” Chase stated.
“This man claims to be me?” The young Wernher replied gesturing to his future self.
“That’s right.”
Jacob began to struggle to his feet, he stared at the young Wernher in surprise, before staring at Clyde.
“Why are you here?” Wernher asked.
“We need your help, could we have some privacy?” The older Wernher asked the room as a whole.
“You can speak in front of us.” Jacob demanded.
“We can give him some time to explain things.” Sarah suggested.
“Where should we go?” Chase asked.
“If you go through to the next room, there is a dining table.” The older Wernher replied.
As the others left the room Jacob did not move initially.
“Remember Wernher, your life depends on this.”
Chapter 22
Guy sat in the bar with Scarlett and took a sip from his beer. She seemed a little uncomfortable around him, but when another man appeared from the steps that Faraday had walked up, she was a little more at ease.
“What’s going on?” The man asked.
“Clint this is Guy Fawkes, he just arrived with my father.” Scarlett replied.
Clint was a young man, perhaps in his late twenties, he had brownish red hair and thick stubble. His eyes were the same piercing blue as his father’s Billy Beane and his son’s Bobby Stinson. He was wearing grey trousers, a black shirt and a long black jacket.
“Hello Guy, my name is Clint Stinson.” He announced with a smile, shaking Guy’s hand.
“Are you a relation of Bobby Stinson?” Guy asked.
“I’m his father, or I will be one day. Do you know him?”
“The men who saved my life were planning to save him, I believe they are trying just now, or they did try. I’m a little unsure as to how this time travel works.”
“It is a bit confusing.” Clint agreed. He walked behind the bar and took a bottle of whisky and a glass for himself. He also grabbed an ashtray. As he took his seat, he lit a cigarette and poured himself a drink.
“So, we are here to stop a man named Abaddon Wolf.” Guy stated, not knowing what else to say.
“Yes. Did you bring guns?” Clint asked.
“We brought four.” Guy confirmed.
“Well, that’s something.” Clint nodded in approval, before taking a draw from his cigarette.
“So what is the plan for the assassination?” Guy asked.
“Well, we have a location in mind, it is the only part of the tour that Alex Salmond will not be participating in. Abaddon Wolf and George Bush Junior will be visiting the Wallace Monument in Stirlingshire. We believe it is the best chance we have, but we don’t know how to gain access.” Scarlett stated.
“I am not familiar with the Wallace Monument.” Guy replied.
Clint got up from his seat and again went behind the bar, before carrying a laptop over to the table. When he placed it down, Guy stared at it in amazement.
“Is this a small television?”
“No, it is a laptop.” Clint replied. He Googled the Wallace Monument and turned the laptop so that Guy could see the picture.
“It is a Monument built to honour William Wallace.” Scarlett began.
“That scumbag!” Guy replied in astonishment.
“He’s a Scottish hero, just where are you from Guy?” Scarlett asked in annoyance.
“I was brought here from 1604, I’m from England.”
“I see.” Clint replied with a look of concern on his face.
“Why are you here?” Scarlett asked.
“Your father saved my life. I am here to repay my debt to him.”
“And how do you intend to do that? You don’t even know what the Wallace Monument is.”
Guy was a little taken aback. “I am a highly trained soldier. I believe my knowledge in this area is far greater than yours.”
Scarlett blushed.
“I don’t think there is a need for anyone to bicker. We are on the same side.” Clint advised.
“I concur, I am here to help you in order to repay my debt to your father.”
“You owe me no debt.” Faraday replied as he and Jane came down the steps hand in hand. Faraday grabbed a chair and pulled it to the top of the table, while Jane took a seat beside Guy Fawkes.
“Guy this is my wife, Jane Faraday.” He said gesturing towards Jane.
“It is a pleasure to meet you.” Guy said extending a hand to shake Jane’s.
“Likewise, you were a legend when I was growing up.”
“I was?”
“Yes, you were a symbol.”
“Incredible. A symbol of what?” Guy said in amazement.
“Well, you were a symbolizer of different things to different people. I suppose for me it would be standing up against a corrupt government.”
“That is very nice to hear.” Guy smiled.
“I’ve never heard of him.” Scarlett interjected.
“You seem to have damaged my reputation Mr Faraday.” Guy said, looking disappointed.
“You are alive Guy, count it as a blessing.” Faraday replied.
“But a symbol never dies.” Guy argued.
“Anyway, James and I have been speaking, and we have decided that we will not take action against Abaddon.” Jane interrupted.
“You can’t be serious Mum!” Scarlett snapped.
“I am deadly serious. Your father and I have been through this too many times, it isn’t worth us losing each other again. We are finally together, we don’t need to do anything.”
“How can you say that?” Scarlett almost shouted.
“Because Scarlett, since we started meddling with past events, it has caused nothing but disaster.” Jane explained.
“Well then it is your duty to help us fix things.” Scarlett argued.
“You cannot change the past Scarlett, well not for the better anyway.” Faraday interjected.
“Mum why have you changed your mind?”
“I don’t want to lose you or your father. We are a family and we are back together again, I will not risk that. And neither will you.”
“Yes I will!”
“We have a good life here, what difference does it make who rules over us?”
“But this is your fault!” Scarlett snapped.
“I have made my decision.” Jane said firmly.
“It isn’t your decision to make Mum! I am an adult, I can do what I like. So can Clint and so can Guy! Maybe when you two were younger you fucked things up, but that doesn’t mean we will. We promised Jacob that we would help him!”
“Jacob is a scumbag!” Faraday yelled.
“He’s been like a father to us.” Clint interjected.
“Which is more than can be said for you.” Scarlett added.
Faraday could hardly believe his own daughter considered Jacob to be a father figure.
“This isn’t a discussion, we are not doing anything.” Jane interrupted.
“If I may, I intend to help kill this man.” Guy stated.
“Why?” Faraday asked in disbelief.
“We gave our word. That is why we are not helping this other friend of yours, so we could come here and help kill Abaddon. He sounds like a swine and I am happy to do this.”
“I thought you were here because you owed me a debt.” Faraday asked.
“I am indeed. I know you want him dead.” Guy advised. “This goes back to what we were discussing last night.”
Faraday was baffled. “Which part?”
“Thinking things through and being short sighted. Yes you say that you do not want to lose your family but think of that family we met yesterday.”
&nb
sp; “This isn’t like what happened to David.” Faraday advised.
“It is actually Mr Faraday. He went to this man for help, and this man killed him. This man is a warmonger and if you honestly believe that after everything you have been through with this man, that he will just allow you to live a quiet life with your family, then once again you are being short sighted. But at least on this occasion I understand your decision, you have your wife back. I will kill this man for you.” Guy smiled.
“Well, you will be doing it alone!” Jane snapped. “I won’t hear another word about it, I will not lose my family, not again!”
Chapter 23
As they entered their new living quarters, the three men were amazed. They were not luxurious by any definition of the word, but compared to the cell they had been in they were heaven. It was a wooden hut, consisting of three single beds, a shower, a toilet and a sink. They each took a shower and changed into clean clothes.
They then sat down on their beds and ate chicken and rice, it was the first solid food they had had in a long time, they then washed it down with coffee. Bobby looked at his cane in amazement, his hip was excruciatingly painful and he was glad to have it back. Throughout the afternoon, the items Bobby had asked for were delivered to the hut. To Bobby’s surprise they had even been given the car he had asked for, it was a black Volkswagen KDF.
It was the first time Bobby had managed to look at Will and Emmerich. They were both incredibly thin, particularly Will, and their faces looked drawn and gaunt, they too had shaved heads. When Bobby looked at himself in the mirror, he was stunned by how ill he looked. His blue eyes were glazed over and he had big black bags beneath them, he was perhaps as thin as Will and his black shaved head made him look like a skeleton.
“So I need to tell you both why we are here.” Bobby began, both men looked slightly scared as Bobby started to speak. “I have been asked to build a time machine for the Nazis.”
“If you can do that then we can use it to break out.” Will replied.
Bobby nodded. “Well, the thing is, I can’t actually do it, but that’s not what I told them.”
“So what are we going to do?” Emmerich asked.
“Well, I have managed to get us a car, we could try to escape.” Bobby suggested.
“They have tanks surrounding the place, we would never make it.” Emmerich replied, looking slightly downtrodden.
