  pay’ta’ri – the inspection of the innerself (body, mind, soul) for any changes or damage

  rita – magic

  rite – a structured use of magic, either practical or ceremonial

  Rite of Solu – a special communion with Av, in which great stores of energy are transmitted directly from Av to the rite–caster

  Ritious City – the capital city of the wuman Realm, the seat of power and home to the High Family and High Tribe

  ritu’chi – the most private part of the conscious self

  Salaka Dign – the drums present at the feast honoring the ancestors

  san’chron – a unit of time, approximately an hour and a half; a turn has thirty san’chrons

  Shalgo Imantu Solu – the Supreme One, the Creator and the Creation

  Solu’san – the forbidden sharing of the Rite of Solu between two people, for the one with greater av’rito’ka may absorb the mind of the other; this practice was not, however, forbidden before the Omni–Demarcu

  Sor’n – the direction ninety degrees to the left of Av rising

  sparrowette – a weapon, a cross between a spear and an arrow, launched by a heavy, two–person bow

  Ssacrema’av – Cribeau rites for the dead

  Supreme One – the Creator, the universe, embodied by Av; Shalgo Imantu Solu

  T’Av’li – the Palace at the center of the Ritious City, home of the High Family

  tamarind – a tart fruit that grows in a pod

  tan’ka – travel drums

  ten’gran – ten grans, or about eleven minutes

  ten’turn – ten turns, one tenth of a Season

  thrista – a type of stinging nettle

  to’maka – a weapon with a hooked blade

  Trade’Marm – a master Trade woman

  Tru’Av’ru – the wall of force that originally divided the world of Alona seven thousand cycles ago

  tukni – mid–tone drums that are used for calling, major rite–casting and story–telling; also used to tell the passing of the eve

  tuku – bass drums, used for solemn or grave news

  tum’tyn – high, bongo–like drums used for personal rites

  Tures – the turn of rest after the Salaka

  turn – one rotation of Alona; a day, the turning of dark to light, day to night

  Turo’dan – the prophesied ending of the age of Light, when all that was sundered would be made whole and all that was whole would be undone

  Twa’zin’he – those who ride the silver crests; a Katari tribe

  Voice – the advisor and spokesperson of a Queen

  War’don’mi – a kata or fighting form of the martial arts, part of the teaching aides of the warru

  War’ri’u – the first observance of the Chajana

  warru – a warrior

  Warru First – the chief warrior of a Queen, usually well versed in strategy and tactics

  Warru Second – the second in command of a Queen’s warru

  Weste – the direction of Av setting

  Wulady – the Katari name for wumans

  wuman – human beings on the world of Alona, one of the Av’Touched races

  Yakan’tsu – a political party determined mainly by region and affiliation

  Ya’kano – Greater Goddess of Light, Rite and Rita, Daughter of Av

  yoni’do – bovine animals, used for meat, leather and other animal products

  yora – a small, spine-covered mammal

  Yo’teng – the division of the world of Alona by the Tru’Av’ru

  Zehj’Ba – a phenomenon that is draining the Av’ru and the Av’rujo of life and light energy

  zenith – the middle of the turn

  Zwin’buta’lngi – those who run with the lavender winds, a Katari Tribe
