She knew none of this but knew that she should, she definitely should. It was like she’d forgotten her own name. This mattered, like her research, like him. She turned to the first page. Something passed over her like a chill.
The words were there, written in fresh ink. They were at once unfamiliar and well known, foreign and intimate. She felt like she should be shocked to read them, scandalized. And yet, they also seemed as inevitable as time.
She ran a fingertip across them, as if to confirm they were real.
The first line of the curious book, written in her own handwriting, read:
