Mac’s head jerked around. “No, they were the best.… No.”
“That’s the way it was with me. When your father left, I hurt so bad I thought I might die, but if that was the price I had to pay for knowing him, I was blessed with a bargain. Is that the way it is with you, Mac?”
Mac nodded, his attention pulled away by the clatter of wagon wheels on the sandstone road leading to their home. “Looks like Sparks is coming out again to check on his shirt.”
Mary blushed. “Ah, Mac.”
“Ah, Ma.”
Mac took his mother’s hand and led her down from the rock, and into Sparks Pierson’s smile.
