In Memoriam to Lexi Brooks
Lexi lived her life fully. With some of us she shared her all; with all of us she shared some of her. She will be remembered for her strength, wisdom, courage, and so much more.
Lexi's appreciation for reading, writing, and editing was matched only by her love of the written word, a strong character, and a well-written story. Lexi knew how to give criticism or feedback in the kindest of ways. She was a gifted editor and always willingly, thoughtfully, and lovingly shared her talents with us. She will be greatly missed, happily remembered, and always loved. We will miss her friendship most of all.

The Penitents by Sophie Kisker
Twenty years ago, Leina's people attacked Samiel's planet out of desperation, and though they lost, they left behind a terrible legacy. Now the two species find themselves needing each other to survive, but forgiveness is difficult, and Leina's people are finding that the aliens have no intention of making it easy for them to atone for their sins.
Note: Please be aware that this book includes stories of miscarriage – if losing a baby has touched your life you should proceed cautiously.
This story also includes scenes of corporal punishment. It does not include condoms, safe sex practices, or STDs – because this is a fantasy world and those things can be just ignored if we want to!

Otherwise their problems will become much, much larger than either of them could dream.

Of Fog and Fire by Jennifer Bene
Phee isn’t what anyone would call normal. She grew up dreaming of faeries, forest queens, and kings of fire – all while living a dismal life in the thick fog south of downtown. Working in a café beneath the glittering glass towers of uptown, Phee is able to see glimpses of the sky and let her imagination run wild, and that’s exactly what happens when she lays eyes on Bryant Holbrook.
Bryant is gorgeous, playful, and has a wicked side that Phee wants to get to know on an intimate level. It’s just that downtowners aren’t supposed to be with girls from the fog, and Phee really needs to keep her head out of the clouds and her hands off of him. But with one flash of his turquoise eyes Phee knows she can’t back down from the challenge he offers.
As their worlds collide, Bryant and Phee will discover that they have more in common than they could have ever known. When push comes to shove will Phee give up on her fantasies and finally be a normal girl, or will she be the queen of fire her mother always told her she could be?

Penitent – One who is deeply sorry for sins committed and seeks to atone for them.
Part 1 – The Journey
Chapter 1 – A Dying Planet
As I stood in line, waiting for my turn to be punished for the sins of my people, I remembered that the older folks at home always told us that there is no great gain without great pain.
I’m not sure this is what they had in mind.
Perhaps I'd better back up a little.
Or a lot.
The scientists had warned us for decades. If we don't change our ways, our planet is going to die. And despite the signs that appeared one by one as predicted, we blithely lived our lives as though nothing would never change. The seas rose, the air got dirtier, and the animals began to disappear, but by the time we really understood what we’d done, it was too late. Fortunately the smart people had rolled up their sleeves, and, along with hefty and secret government grants, started to find a way off our already-doomed planet.
We were flabbergasted fifty years ago when the government revealed that not only had they found a habitable planet only two year's journey away, but that they had managed to build a ship that could get there. We sent the ship to the planet, only to find out to our shock that it wasn't uninhabited. Suddenly there was a newfound swell of belief in a universal Creator, for these aliens looked almost exactly like us. They were taller, broader, and often darker in skin, and the males had a lot more hair, everywhere, but their hands each had five fingers and all their "equipment" was generally the same, if you get my meaning.
Once that amazement passed, there was a new problem. They were not as fond of the idea of us moving in as we were. They'd gone through the same ecological nightmare centuries before; unlike us they had figured a way out, and part of it was by careful population control. Having several million people descend upon the planet – people who had some really bad habits – was not their idea of a smart move. They said no.
We were desperate, so we attacked them. It was clumsy and stupid, because they were much more advanced, but like I said, we were desperate. We fought back and forth for decades, our efforts in their eyes seemingly no more than those of annoying insects to be slapped with. Eventually we committed one particularly heinous act, and they’d had enough, and eighteen years ago they’d pushed us back. Way back. All the way home. And there they kept us, destroying our space program and trapping us on the planet in our own filth. And we deserved it.
