She held the crumpled piece of paper wadded tightly between her fingers. It was partially wet from the tears she kept wiping from her cheeks and the writing was blurred in areas from where her tears mixed with the ink. She unraveled the paper for what must have been the twentieth time and started to read it again.
Bree,
I’m sorry to do this. Today of all days and no, I didn’t plan it this way. It’s just the way it is. I can’t just hang around and wait for you to decide that you want to live life a little. We’re young, things are supposed to be fun. I want to have some fun. I want to be a little wild. I want to live for today, not keep planning and saying tomorrow or next week.
I hope you don’t hate me. I just can’t wait around anymore. I waited for your finals to be over. I waited until you graduated. Then you asked me to wait while you finished grad school. Well Bree, I can’t wait any longer. I need to go and find out what it’s like to live like a twenty five year old and not like some boring old married man.
I hope you understand. I know you think I’m a jerk, but I’m just being honest. We’ve both been thinking about whether or not this would work for a while now. Maybe we should have called it quits a few months ago, I don’t know. After almost three years, I can’t do it anymore. I can’t wait for you to decide that I’m important. I want to live now, today. So, I’m moving out.
I packed some clothes and stuff for now. I’ll return when it’s convenient for you to pick up the rest of my things sometime next weekend.
Mark
Bree started to cry harder. Dierks was singing, ‘Even if you don’t say you do.’ She reached up and wiped the tears with the letter. She looked at the semi-tear filled paper in her hand, shook her head back and forth as if to clear her thoughts, and then blew her nose in it and tossed it in the waste can.
She was done reading that letter. She was done with Mark; she should have said goodbye six months ago when he called her ‘boring in life and dull in bed.’ At the time, she passed it off as a combination of alcohol and the heat of the moment, they had been arguing a lot at that time. She knew things had never felt right since then. If she was lucky, she thought to herself, she was done with men in general. All they did was complicate things. Then she laughed to herself. Well, at least she was done with the first two; both the letter and Mark were gone now.
Bree started to have a conversation with what she called her ‘Inner Bree.’
Well, fuck him if he can’t wait. It’s not like I’m just sitting around doing nothing. God, I’m going to Duke. I’m enrolled in one of the best schools for environmental sciences and I’m in the top of my class. I’m getting straight A’s in one of the most difficult Marine Biology programs there is and he wants to have fun. Fuck him. Doesn’t he think I want to have fun too? It’s not like I’m boring, no matter what he said.
She caught herself thinking about that last line. She repeated it to herself. Then she thought, when was the last time I had fun? When was the last time I went out and did something spontaneous and silly? Shit! I am boring. I can’t even remember the last time I had fun. Well fuck it I’m going to do something wild, something silly and spontaneous. Something I’ve told myself I’d do and never did……Now what?
As she stood in the middle of her kitchen floor, listening to her favorite country radio channel, Alan Jackson’s ‘Good Time’ came on and she started to sing to the lyrics or at least most of the lyrics. ‘I’m tired of working all week….la da da da,…counting conditions to be right, it’s Friday night…..la da da…I need a good time. I wanna have fun…it’s time for a good time.’
Bree decided that was it. It was time for her to have fun. She was going to let loose and enjoy herself for once. She wasn’t going to worry about the ‘what if’s.’ She was going to go with whatever felt good. Something she almost never did. Bree wasn’t a ‘go with what feels good’ kind of girl. Aubree Leigh Bradley was a planner, a thinker, a good girl, and a young woman who always did the right thing, but not today.
It was Friday and she had taken the day off to celebrate her birthday. A few of her closest girlfriends from grad school had planned a day of surprises for her and she was going to enjoy it. She wasn’t going to let Mark’s leaving ruin her day any more than it already had. She was determined to put on a good front and enjoy her birthday.
She planned on having fun with whatever adventures the girls had planned for her. She was going to do something she had never done before, but talked about often. That’s what they promised. In fact, they swore to her that the entire day would be full of surprises, fun, and firsts. She was up for all of it. Truth be told, she couldn’t wait to see what the day held. Whatever it was, it had to be better than how it had started off.
She thought to herself… Anything had to be better than that. The shit didn’t even have the balls to talk to me. He broke up with me, after three years together, in a fucking note. What a shit!
She just had to put her mind to it and make the decision that she was going to have fun with her friends. The rest, she would deal with later, tomorrow, maybe. Besides, there was nothing she could do about things now. Mark had made his decision and she wasn’t so sure it was a wrong one, so why waste time trying to figure it out.
“Alan Jackson was right. ‘I wanna have fun and it’s damn time for a good time.’ Hell, its past time,” she said out loud even though she was alone in the apartment.
Bree didn’t usually use what her Momma referred to as ‘swear words.’ She was a good Southern girl, brought up right. She went to church on Sundays, occasionally taught Sunday school, and volunteered at the local Animal Rescue Clinic. She never had what her Momma called a ‘potty mouth,’ but when Bree was mad, her language skills took a nose dive and her thesaurus became filled with four letter expletives.
She looked at her watch; it was almost eleven o’clock in the morning. The girls would be coming over to pick her up shortly. She had to get ready. Just as she decided it was time to get started, her cell phone rang and she jumped.
“Hey Bree, Happy Birthday!” Diana yelled as she answered. Diana was her best friend since high school and the one person she knew would make sure today was special for her.
“Hey Di, thanks. What’s on the agenda for today?” She tried to sound upbeat.
“Oh no birthday girl; today is one big surprise. You don’t get to know anything about our plans until it’s absolutely necessary. Besides, I’m not giving you a chance to think about anything I have planned or to say ‘no’ to anything. Today is all about you and the unexpected.”
“Di, you have no idea how right you are. My day has started out with the unexpected, so I might as well go all in.” She laughed nervously, not wanting to give too much away and ruin her friend’s enthusiastic mood and surprise.
“Bree, is everything ok?”
“Yeah, everything is fine. I’m just excited about everything. Are you sure you don’t want to give me a hint about what the plans are for today?”
“Absolutely not!”
“Not even a little hint?” she pretended to plead.
“Nothing girl, you’re not getting even the tiniest of hints.” Diana laughed as Bree made a whining sound. “Cut it out. Get ready and we’ll be over by noon to pick you up. We have a few surprises planned for you.”
“Then you better let me go. I still need to shower and change. I’ll see you when you get here.”
“Ok. Get a move on it. We have a lot to do and we can’t be late girl!”
“Di,” she said, almost wanting to tell her best friend what was going on with her.
“What is it Bree? Are you sure everything is ok? You sound upset.” She could hear the concern in her friend’s voice. She knew Diana would have spent some time making special plans for her. She decided not to say anything that would put a kink in things.
“Yeah, everything is fine. I just wanted to say thanks for making the plans for today. I know I’m going to have a great time.”
“You are Bree.
I promise you are. Now, get a move on and be ready by noon. And dress casual, nothing fancy. You know jeans and a t-shirt.”
“Done.”
“Ok. See you then, bye.”
Bree wiped the last of the tears from her eyes and made a promise to herself. “No more tears today. I will not cry about him anymore. He will not ruin my fun or my birthday.”
Now, she had to take a shower and put some Visine in her burning red eyes. As she went into the bedroom, she saw the picture that she posted on her mirror months ago. It was a cut out from the local paper about the new shop that opened, called the “Tattoo Gallery.” The reported said it had two of the best tattoo artists on the east coast as co-owners. That’s what she really wanted to do. She’d put it off for far too long. She wanted to get a tattoo for as long as she could remember and for over a year now she kept pushing it off and never made the time to do it. Well, she would take care of this today. If not today, definitely tonight; tonight was the night. Tonight she would be spontaneous and check this one off her list of things she wanted to do in life. Then she had an ‘ah ha moment.’
Where is that list? I had it not too long ago. Talking to herself, she pulled open her desk drawer and shuffled through a bunch of papers before she saw the pink sheet folded in half. Pulling it out, she smiled to herself. Maybe, I could check off more than one thing.
She started to read through the list that she had made on her seventeenth birthday. She rarely looked at it, usually only on her birthday to review it. So far, she hadn’t made a dent in it. Now it was eight years later and still, she really hadn’t achieved much. “This is my year. This year I check off as much of this list as possible.”

Ok, well my options are limited, but let’s see how the night goes, she laughed to herself. She walked over to her desk area, pulled a pen from the drawer and crossed out two items. Well, at least I took that trip cross country before starting grad school. Then she crossed out University and Grad School. She wrote the word ‘Tonight!’ next to number six and ‘We’ll see!’ next to number seven. Lastly, she added the words ‘Forever love!’ in parentheses next to number ten on her list. She tossed the pen and the pink note paper on her bedside table. The pen made the table; the pink paper billowed to the floor next to her bed as she went into the bathroom.
Bree turned on the shower and quickly undressed. Tossing her clothes in the hamper, she looked at herself in the full length mirror on the back of the bathroom door. “Not bad,” she said as she examined herself.
Bree was a healthy, outgoing, twenty-five year old. She kept herself in good shape. Petite, measuring barely five foot five, she weighed about a hundred and thirty pounds, had curvy hips and a round butt. She was fairly tight and muscular, but she was aware most of her weight was carried in her hips and ass. As she turned sideways to look at said ass, she slapped it hard. It’s no Jennifer Lopez, but it works for me.
Her hair was ebony black and had a shiny luster to it. She had eggplant highlights and it was very attractive as it cupped around her heart shaped face in the front. She wore it shoulder length, but often pulled it up into a simple ponytail.
She looked at her reflection and examined her face. High cheek bones and a cupid like nose perfectly placed, reflected back at her as seen by her deep emerald green eyes. She got those from her father’s DNA. She smiled as she thought of her Dad’s eyes and how they always looked so kind and loving. God, she thought, if I could only meet someone as great as my Dad. She smiled and her full lips puckered as she kiddingly blew a kiss at her reflection.
Bree jumped into the shower and within minutes was shaved, showered, and had covered herself in coconut body butter. She took a deep breath of the coconut scent and laughed, thinking, good enough to eat.
It didn’t take her long to decide what to wear. She pulled her favorite pair of worn out jeans from her drawer and tossed them onto her Grandma’s four poster bed that took up most of the room. The jeans she chose had tears across her knees and a tear completely across her right lower butt cheek. She didn’t care, they were her favorites and she was going to wear them. Besides, it was not like she was out to impress anyone. Hell, it was her birthday and she didn’t even have a date. If it weren’t for her girlfriends, she’d be spending the day alone.
“Thanks Mark, you ass.” Talking to herself once again.
She went to her underwear drawer and decided to treat herself to something special for the occasion. She pulled out a pair of lacy red undies. Not quite a thong, but not much more. The kind that has just enough material to cover your ass crack, but not enough to leave panty lines or actually cover your ass cheeks very much. Then she pulled the tags off of the new half cup bra she bought to match the red panties.
Looking in the dresser mirror, even she was impressed by how hot she looked. “Damn girl, you look like a wrapped gift yourself. Now, if you only had someone to give yourself to, to unwrap you, your twenty-fifth birthday wouldn’t feel like a complete fuck up.”
She opened another drawer and pulled out a simple white long sleeved, V-necked T-shirt. Pulling it over her head, she liked the idea that you could see the sexy red Victoria Secret bra through the white cotton shirt. It didn’t hurt any that the half shelf bra also pushed her C cup breasts front and center and gave her a cleavage that would draw at least a few eyes in her direction.
Almost ready to go, she ran a brush through her hair and put on a little blush and lip gloss. Never liking the idea of wearing makeup, Bree looked better in her natural state than most women who wore full cover up. She grabbed her black leather shoe boots, put them on, and pulled up the side zipper. The two inch heels helped a little, but she was still petite looking.
Happy with the overall look, Bree took the picture she left on her dresser and put it in her leather sac purse. She was ready. Just as she looked at her watch to check the time, she heard banging on her apartment door.
“Happy Birthday Bree! Now open the damn door and let us in.” She heard them laughing.
“Ok, ok, don’t break the door down.” She barely opened it before three very loud, laughing, talking, and all around excited young women came bursting in to her apartment.
All at once, they started to sing ‘Happy Birthday to you…’ simultaneously hugging and kissing her between verses. She couldn’t help but laugh at them. Not one of them could carry a tune, but then neither could she. She did love them for trying though.
When all was said and done, they left her apartment and made it down to Front Street in time for their lunch reservation. Beaufort, North Carolina was not known for its cuisine but there was one placed Bree loved to eat and Diana knew it well. In fact, she worked there part time. Diana had made lunch reservations at Clawson’s Restaurant. It was a bar and grill with some of the best seafood in the area and the absolute best seafood bisque.
The girls went in and were greeted by a handsome young man. Brian, a friend of Diana’s, took them to their table, all the while being teased by each one of them. “So Brian, it’s Bree’s birthday. Don’t you think she deserves a birthday kiss?” teased Diana.
“Happy Birthday Bree,” he said as they reached the table. Then he took her in his arms, bent her back and gave her a kiss. Not your average birthday kiss, but an honest to goodness tongue down the throat wet kiss. To Bree’s surprise, she enjoyed it. It had been a long time since anyone other than Mark had his tongue in her mouth and Bree wasn’t going to pass up any opportunity for fun today.
She smiled at him as he ended the kiss and brought her back to an upright position. “Thanks Brian.” She wi
nked at him as he returned her smile.
“It’s my pleasure. I’ll get you ladies some menus and take your drink order when I get back.” He winked back at Bree as he turned away.
“Wow. That looked like a great kiss,” Gretchen, Bree’s lab partner and friend said as she watched Brian walk away from the table. “God, he has a great ass. Doesn’t he?”
“Yes he does!” The girls answered in unison and laughed at each other.
It wasn’t long before they ordered and were served. They chatted all through lunch and talked about everything other than what the plans for the day included. It wasn’t until they were walking down the street that Diana told Bree what was next on their agenda.
“Ok Bree, you are always saying you want to do something new and unexpected, so that’s what I planned. Since you also say, ‘I wish I knew what tomorrow holds,’ this next experience will take care of both things at once. We’re taking you to see a Tarot Card Reader.”
“Really Di? Oh, you know I’ve always wanted to have my cards read, but I’ve been too afraid to do it. I can’t wait. Thanks you guys.” She was truly excited and a little nervous.
The girls walked up Front Street for several blocks before turning down a narrow side street. Walking two by two, arm in arm, they looked like they could be on a school trip. Midway up the block, they arrived at a small shop called the “White Candle.” When they entered, a soft melody of sound was heard as the door swung open and the wind chime announced their arrival. A subtle fragrance of jasmine and some type of heavier spice, similar to clove, scented the room. In general, it was a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Within a minute or two, a beautiful dark haired woman with cobalt blue eyes came out from the back room. She was tall, with long dark hair, perfect olive skin tone, and a soft and comforting voice. Her smile was welcoming. When she spoke, there was calmness about her; you were put at ease immediately.
