“If it’s too personal or you don’t want to talk to me about it yet, I understand. No big deal, I just thought I’d ask. I don’t want to be moving in on another guy’s girl or anything,” he teased.
“Well, twenty-four hours ago, that might have been the case, but even then, not really. Do you want the truth of the story?” She looked across to the driver’s side and saw Matt nodding his head in the affirmative.
“Yeah, I do. I’d like the truth about whatever we discuss. I would really hate to be lied to. I’ve had enough lies. I’d like to think we can be truthful with each other; even if that means saying, ‘I don’t want to talk about it yet.’ Is that agreeable with you?”
Bree nodded. “That’s not only agreeable; it’s preferable. I don’t like lies either or cheats for that matter.”
“Good. Then we are two of a kind there. Honesty is the best policy, all the way around, no matter what. Agreed?”
“Agreed and with that in mind, I have a question for you. Is this what you would call moving in on a girl?”
“It’s a start in that direction. Is it too soon for you or are you ok with that?”
“No. It’s not too soon. Mark may have walked out this morning, but we’ve been over for a while. It took a little longer than the norm for us to realize it. A wise woman pointed out to me earlier today, something I didn’t recognize before. She said I wasn’t grieving for what I lost. I was grieving for what I never had. It was so true that I couldn’t deny it anymore, even to myself. So, surprisingly, yes I am ok with that.” She felt comforted, and more importantly understood, as Matt reached over and held her hand as they continued to drive.
They arrived at the restaurant about twenty minutes later. It was a ‘road house’ type of place with the smell of grilled steak wafting out into the parking lot. Bree hadn’t eaten since lunch, and even then she only had the seafood chowder, some hush puppies, and a side salad. She was starving and the smell made her stomach growl. She looked at Matt in embarrassment.
“Don’t worry about it Bree. I like a woman who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to ask for it,” he laughed, “even if it is by her stomach growling to say she’s hungry.”
“Thanks for pointing that out, you’re a real gentleman!” She hit his arm as they walked.
“Bree, make no mistake, there are times when I’m the epitome of a Southern gentleman, then there are those times when I truly am not a gentleman at all.”
“That should work, because there are times when I’m truly not a lady.”
“I like you more and more Ms. Bradley.” He draped his arm over her shoulder as they went in.
Matt looked around the seating area and then nodded to the waitress in a knowing fashion. She waved back and gave him a nod and smile. Placing his hand at the small of Bree’s back he guided her to the corner booth. It was a little darker and no one was sitting in the booth next to them so they would be able to continue to talk freely. The waitress was a friend of Matt’s. She welcomed them and took their order.
“Hi Jenny.” Without hesitation, Matt ordered for both of them. “We’ll have two draughts on tap and two house specials. The sixteen ounce steaks, medium rare, baked potato on one, fries on the other, and side salads one with Italian dressing, one with Ranch. Hold the onion on both please.” He looked at Bree for a second and she just smiled and gave a slight nod.
“Do you always order without asking your date what she wants?”
“Actually, it is kind of a thing with me. Do you not like what I ordered?”
“No, it’s fine. Now I’m wondering what else there is that’s a ‘thing’ with you?” She looked at him and smiled.
“Well, if dinner goes as well as I hope it will, you’ll find out more about that later.” He gave her a crooked smile and took hold of her hand across the table. “So, finish telling me about this guy thing you started.”
“Let’s say, I was in a long term relationship and we didn’t fit as well as either of us thought we would. It recently ended, very recently actually, as recently as this morning.” Matt whistled, but Bree continued. “Now I want to move on. I’ve been told, I have already spent too many tears on him and I agree. We should have ended it about six months ago, like I hinted earlier. Whatever the reason we didn’t. Now, it’s your turn. What’s your story?”
Matt blew out a deep breath. “Mine ended recently too. I was in a long term relationship for two years, up until about eight months ago. She wasn’t who I thought she was either. So we have that in common. Long story short, she cheated on me, I caught her, and I don’t put up with cheating or lies. I called it quits and said goodbye.”
“And since then?” She took a sip of the beer the waitress had just placed in front of them.
“There is no since then,” he stated.
“Matt, no women since you broke up eight months ago?” She almost choked on her beer.
“Nope, not a one.” He looked across at her. “Believe it or not, I’m kind of old-fashioned in that respect. I’m not a sleep around guy. Never was, never will be. Although I will admit, I know immediately if I like someone and if we’re both interested, we make it work. But, all of my relationships have been fairly long term and all monogamous, at least as far as I’m aware.”
“All of them?” Bree raised her brow in disbelief. “Really? I find that hard to, let’s say, understand. You’re a good looking guy, intelligent, educated, a former Marine with a pretty killer body, who just happens to jump out of planes for a living. If that’s not sexy enough, you have that ‘do me’ smile of yours. I’m not saying you’re lying, but I have to admit, I’m finding it hard to believe.”
“We did say we’d be truthful, didn’t we? I’m telling you the truth Bree. I have no reason to lie to you. With the exception of my first year as a Marine when I did some experimenting. I’ll admit I played around for a short time and found certain things to my liking. The answer still remains yes; all of my other relationships have been monogamous and fairly long term. I want you to know that, to believe that, it’s important to me. And I’ve never heard the term ‘do me smile’ before. I like that.”
“Experimenting?” Bree really didn’t hear anything Matt said after the word experimenting. She missed the significance of his next statements. But as Bree asked, Jenny brought over their steaks and broke the flow of the conversation.
“Anything else you two need?” she asked. She placed the steaks in front of them and the salads and sides in the middle of the table. They both said no. “Ok, then enjoy, wave me down if you need anything.”
“Back to the experimenting, care to explain further?” she quizzed.
“I’ll say this for now. My tastes differ from the main-stream. Here’s an example, I like vanilla ice cream. I love it and prefer it with caramel and hot chocolate drizzled all over it, some nuts, and whipped cream on top. Then, instead of serving it in a cone or cup, I like it sitting on a walnut brownie and served spread out in a bowl. On occasion, I’ll change it up with some fresh fruit over the top and serve it on a banana, but always with whipped cream.”
Matt’s smile was a little devious, but what Bree focused on was how his voice changed as he described everything. She knew immediately he was talking about a lot more than the way he liked ice cream. Her first thought was ‘Wow!’ Her second was, ‘Two can play this game.’
“Well, who wouldn’t like their vanilla served that way. It’s like an orgasm in a bowl!” She smirked at his surprised expression.
“Oh Bree, you are more and more unexpected to me with each moment we share and you have no idea how right you are. How about we eat now while our steaks are hot and later I’ll share more information with you and you with me.”
“If I wasn’t so hungry, I might say no.” She eyed him over her steak and then cut into it; taking a deep breath as the smell of fresh grilled prime grade meat hit her senses. “Since I’m starved, you’re safe for now.” Her inner Bree was asking… Yeah Bree, but how safe are we? He is mighty te
mpting and you’re pushing your comfort zone big time here…We’re supposed to get out of our comfort zone, isn’t that what today was all about? Work with me here, this could be fun.
Matt laughed, “Well, since I’m starved too, you’re safe for now also. However, I can’t guarantee how long that will last.” He looked at her exposed cleavage without any attempt to hide his gaze. “I may have more of an appetite than I realized.” He licked his lips; then he placed a chunk of steak in his mouth and actually groaned in pleasure.
Bree wasn’t sure if he made that sound due to the taste of the steak or the sight of her ample breasts. She wondered, just what appetite was he referring to? Her thought process was broken by the ring of her phone. She pulled it from her purse and held the picture on the screen toward Matt. He smiled at her with a slight gleam in his eye. Bree pressed the talk button and they both said, “Hello Di,” in unison.
“You two are very funny. Ha, ha!” Diana answered back, then continued, “So I guess everything is ok and I don’t have to notify the State Police.”
“Everything is fine Di. We’re having a good time and he hasn’t tried any funny business.” She laughed as Matt yelled into the phone, “Yet.”
“Good. I’m glad to hear it. Keep your phone on just in case I decide to call you again later. Call me when you get home, so I know you arrived safe.”
“Di really?”
“Yes Bree, really?”
Matt interrupted the conversation and put his hand out to Bree for the phone. She looked at him questioningly, but when he raised his brow and put his hand closer to her, she gave him the phone and waited to hear what he had planned.
“Diana, you’re a good friend and I admire that more than you could know. However, if you want to call Bree later that’s great, but you should know that I’ll be with her no matter what time you call tonight. So, if she doesn’t answer her phone, she’s tied up.” He smiled as Bree gasped. “You can call mine, you have the number.”
Bree gave him a look of surprise, bordering on shock. He handed the phone back to her and took another bite of his steak. She laughed, “good night Di.” She disconnected the call after she heard Diana’s response, “Well, ok then, good night you two.”
The meal was excellent and they enjoyed over an hour of discussion after dinner. Time moved quickly and they were comfortable with each other. The conversation flowed easily, even though all Bree could think of was what Matt had told Diana. It didn’t impact their conversation, but it was having a considerable impact on her. She hadn’t been able to sit still since he said it.
Neither of them hesitated to answer each other’s questions, some rather intimate in nature. By the end of the night, they knew more about each other than they expected to. Matt drove back to Bree’s and walked her to the door.
“Well Bree, it’s up to you.” He stepped closer to her and stroked his hand down her arm and held her hand. “Do I come up or do you make a liar out of me?”
Bree hesitated for a few moments. “Matt, am I reading too much between the lines or have you been hinting at something all night? I get the feeling that there is more here than meets the eye, as they say.”
He kissed the side of her neck and brushed back her hair with the tips of his fingers, as he whispered in her ear, “Invite me up and find out.”
Angele’s words were playing in her mind as if she were whispering them into her other ear. ‘You’re caught up in the details, the minutia of the day to day, you’re debating yourself. You want new things, to meet strangers, to take chances.’ Then most loudly, the words, ‘Be the flow Bree, you can have what you want.’
Bree unlocked her door and tightened her hold on Matt’s hand as she walked into her apartment. “I’d like you to come in Matt. I’d like it very much, but I’m not sure about anything else right now.”
“That’s ok. We have time. I’m all yours ‘til ten tomorrow. Hell, even then I’m yours since I’m your jump partner,” he said as he followed her up the stairs to her apartment. Not once did he take his eyes off her bottom, specifically the exposed skin from the tear in her jeans.
“Oh really, you’re mine until ten? That’s good to know, because I believe you promised me a few answers and some fill in the blank statements.”
“Please, make yourself comfortable. Would you like something to drink? Wine, beer, anything?” Bree moved to the kitchen area.
“Something non-alcoholic is good. Water would be perfect actually.” Matt looked around the apartment, he noted only one door off to the side of the sitting room. “Um, Bree…the bathroom?”
“Water it is.” Looking over her shoulder she pointed to the door. “Oh, the bathroom is through my bedroom and on the right.”
She grabbed two bottles of water from the refrigerator and went into the sitting area. Country music started to play quietly in the background as she hit a few buttons on the remote.
Matt looked around her room as he walked through to the bathroom. ‘I’ll give it to her, she is neat and clean. She even makes her bed with matching linen and little pillows. It’s a nice big four poster bed too.’
As he left the bathroom, he saw the pink paper on the floor. Curiosity got the better of him and he picked it up and started to read it. A smile consumed his features as he read down the list that was titled, ‘Bree’s Wish list.’ He was most intrigued by the last few items. He thought about how to approach this, he felt reassured that she would be open to his initial topic of discussion they started at the road house, especially now that he saw her unspoken desires.
He was playing out the next few minutes with her and how he would approach things as his thoughts about her played in his mind. This girl gets more and more interesting, attractive, surprising, and intriguing to me by the minute. This conversation is going to go easier than I originally thought it would. If this is her wish list, I may be able to grant a few wishes for my birthday girl.

“Um Bree, I think we need to talk darlin’.” He smiled at her as he held up the pink folded paper in his hand. “Honey, I think we may have some interests in common and let me clarify by stating I could care less about Rome, Paris, or the Cousteau Group, but everything else is right up my alley. With the exception of number six.”
“Oh God! Matt how did you get that? And why did you read it? Oh God, I’m so embarrassed! Give me that!”
She tried to grab it from his hand, but he was a foot taller than her and she had absolutely no chance in hell of reaching it. He teased with her for a minute as they danced around the floor space and she continued to attempt to get the paper from him.
“It would make more sense if we sat down and discussed this. I mean, I have already read it and find it most interesting. I find it very thought-provoking and a nice little lead in to the discussion we started at dinner earlier. Sit here with me.” He sat on the couch and tapped the seat area beside him. Bree sat next to him; her face was completely red with embarrassment.
“What do you want to discuss?” She could barely look at him.
Matt cupped her chin in his hand and gently turned her to face him, “First, you know I wasn’t talking about ice cream earlier tonight, right?”
“Of course, I do. I did mention ‘orgasm in a bowl’ didn’t I?”
“Yes, yes you did. I thought that was rather witty of you,” he smiled and tilted his head in and lightly kissed her lips. “I like a girl with a sense of humor. Humor is important, but so is intelligence. You have a great deal of both.”
“Thank you. You’re not so
bad yourself. I’ve noticed your humor too, plus two degrees from UNC, your own business, a background in the Marines. Not too shabby mister.” Bree looked at his lips and licked her own. Matt smiled and took a second kiss. He lingered a little longer this time around.
“Thanks, what else do you want to know about me?” He whispered his words across her lips before he took a nip of her lower lip. He was serious all of a sudden, more so than he’d been all night.
“What else should I know?” Bree held his gaze. “What else do you think I need to know?”
“I think you would need to know, that I’m not playing here. I told you I know when I’m interested in someone, I know right off. I’m interested in you Bree and if you’re interested in me, then we should see if we could make things work.” Matt returned her stare. “I’m serious about a few things though Bree, very serious. I would need a complete agreement from you on certain things if you want to work on a relationship. Maybe even develop it into a partnership with me.”
“Ok. You have my attention. What are they?” She focused on him as he spoke, trying to keep her attention on his words and not his sexy mouth.
“First honesty, honesty in all things. No lies, no omissions, no falsehoods. Second, no cheating. It’s one on one from here forward or until we decide together that it will be otherwise. Third, we need to trust each other. I want you to know that I will never hurt you. I will never do anything that you don’t want to do or have done to you.”
“Oh God.” It was said before she even knew the words came out.
“Oh God what?” he asked, a little confused by her response.
“Oh God, I don’t know what to say. You want honest, well here it is big time. Matt, I’m new to all of this. I’ve told you I’ve never even been spanked, let alone anything more than that. Other than Mark, I’ve only been with one other guy and he was my high school boyfriend. I realized that the things I thought about when it came to sex weren’t the ‘normal’ things girls think about. Now, you’re standing here telling me I can have all of that, all the chocolate, caramel, nuts, and toppings I want on my ice cream and I’m scared. What if I suck at it?”
