‘Truly. Trust me on that, Cleo.’

‘Trust you, my love? Always and forever.’

  Historical Note

The military and political events in Egypt described here are as accurate as I can make them—and Napoleon really did promise his beleaguered Army of the East a shipload of entertainers to raise morale! Officers of the rank of general and above are real historical characters, everyone else is my invention.

I have used the place names that Europeans of the time would have used, taking an early nineteenth-century map as my guide. Their modern equivalents are given below in the order in which they are encountered in the story.

  Koum Ombo—Kom Ombo

  Shek Amer—Darau

  Kene—Qena

  Coseir—Kosir or Quseir

  Benisouef—Beni Suef

  Dashur—Dashur

  Sakhara—Sakkara

  Tora—now part of southern Cairo

  Elkatta—El Khatatba
