The Family Plan Page 21

by Susan Gable

“Did you want to announce our news?” she asked.

“Not today. This is the boys’ day. Let’s save it for next Sunday’s family dinner.” He turned her around to face him. “You’re sure about it, right? Because once we tell my mom that you intend to make an honest man out of me, and that you want the whole nine yards—the big church wedding with the whole family present—there’s no going back. You’ll be stuck on that course for good. My mother and sisters will flay you alive if you try to back out.”

She leaned into him, kissed him. “I’m sure. I’m ready.”

Hours later, when the extended family had cleared out, while Amelia was putting the kids to bed—as much as anyone actually “put” a teenager to bed—and the dining room had been restored for the next day, Finn climbed the back staircase.

He paused between the landings, where a series of photos hung on the wall. Chip’s hospital picture. A photo of Jordan, wearing a mask, holding Chip in the apartment the day she’d been released from the BMTU and reunited with her little brother, her hero.

Finn and Amelia, the night she’d announced they would call Erie home. That one had been a huge, but very welcome, surprise.

All four of them on the front porch steps, shot by Hayden, the day they’d arrived.

A photo of Finn, wearing his Kiss the Cook apron, sleeping on the sofa in the master bedroom, Chip snuggled on his chest.

Soon enough they would add a wedding picture to the family gallery.

They might have gotten the order wrong. But they’d gotten the family right.
