Losing my wife f@cked me up - my daughter was my only light.
Until Riley came into my life to care for her.
So sweet and innocent, she brightens my world.
Am I crazy to want more?
I couldn’t care for my little girl alone. My work and my grief made it too hard.
A live-in nanny made perfect sense.
I wasn’t looking for benefits – I could find women to ease my pain.
But I’m tired of sh*t-stirring gold-diggers, and oh man, Riley is so hot.
So lovely too – my daughter adores her.
She makes my house a home… makes us a family?
I knew I should stay the fuck away.
To mix sex and home is a bad idea – I don’t want my daughter hurt.
Then came the day I kissed Riley.
Brushed her soft lips, honey sweet.
Saw the passion of innocence in eyes so artless, filled with secret desire.
It’s a dangerous game.
I’ll be her first, but it could break my family.
But for this lust, this love, I’ll take a risk…
Prologue
Nathan
I watched as the statuesque blonde rode my cock, whimpering with every movement of her hips. She was hot and felt good, but my world wasn’t shaking right now. This was just a fuck in a hotel room before I got back to normal life. “Oh, Nathan. You feel so good,” she moaned as she started to rock back and forth over my body. I gripped her hips and thrust my hips up as she screamed my name, coming hard as I kept thrusting. I needed to do it hard to come because these women that I picked up at the bar weren’t doing it for me anymore.
I jerked up one last time before I filled the condom, dropping to the mattress as she smiled down at me. I just wanted her to leave so I could go home and get some sleep before the workday tomorrow. I thought about my sister, Carli, that was staying with me for a week to take care of my daughter. It was a busy week at the graphic design company that I owned, and I needed a little help.
“You need a nanny that will work for you for longer than a week.” I could hear her annoyed voice in my head as the woman sighed dramatically, scooting off my body.
“I guess that’s it?” Her voice sounded hurt, and I blinked and watched as she pulled on her clothes.
“I didn’t promise you any more than this,” I reminded her as she slipped her silk shirt over the black lacy bra, watching her scowl. I didn’t have one-night-stands a lot for this reason. The women always wanted more. I just needed to scratch the itch since my wife had died a year ago, leaving me alone with our two-year-old daughter, Ella. It had been hard on me to handle everything on my own, using unreliable babysitters recommended by the few friends I knew that had kids. I couldn’t trust these young girls to watch my princess and I sat up on the bed, stretching as I felt her eyes on me. I slipped off the condom, tying it off to take it to the bathroom and toss it into the trash.
The room was empty when I walked back in to get dressed, slipping my pants on, and buttoning my shirt loosely before I draped the tie over my neck. I draped my suit jacket over my arm as I walked out of the door, heading down to the lobby to check out.
It was warm here in San Diego as I walked out to get my car from the guys at the valet. I handed them my ticket and watched with a bored expression as the kid ran into the garage to get my brand-new SUV. When he pulled out and turned to pull up in front of me, I stared him down as he hopped out. “Here you go, Mr. Jameson.”
“Thanks,” I replied dryly as I handed him a random bill from my wallet. It must have been a good one with the wide grin on his face, but I didn’t care. I walked around the car to get in, inhaling the scent of the leather seats. I pressed down on the gas before shifting into gear and pulling onto the main street to head ho
me to my beach house.
The drive was quick given the time of night that it was. Carli had grudgingly agreed to watch the baby while I went out with friends after work. She knew that could include women, encouraging me to date but not a fan of my trysts. I turned down the street that led to the entrance of my gated neighborhood, waving at the security guard as I drove through. I took the three streets to my house and pulled into the long driveway, opening the garage and parking next to Carli’s red convertible.
I heard the television in the living room as I walked into the kitchen to drop my keys into the bowl on the counter. Listening closely, I assumed that Ella was sleeping as I sauntered in to see Carli settled back on the cushions of the couch, her dark hair in a messy bun. “How did it go?”
She stretched, turning towards me to frown in my direction. “It went like every other night that I’ve been here. She was amazing. How was your night?”
I dropped into one of the large recliners and considered my answer. “Fine. The usual.”
“It wasn’t a love connection?” Her voice was soft, and I looked at Carli, taking in our similarities.
“Nowhere near.” I dropped my head back and yawned. “It wasn’t worth staying up so late when I have an early meeting.”
“You’re a big boy, Than. I think you can make responsible choices.” She smirked as she turned back to the TV, paying attention to the chick flick that was playing. “You need a damn nanny, you know that?”
“Fine. I’ll place an ad and do some interviews before you leave.” She smiled at me as I closed my eyes. “Fuck, I’m tired.”
“Get some sleep.” I felt Carli’s hand on my arm and nodded weakly. We discussed what she was going to do with Ella the next day, making me smile as she said they would come have lunch with me. With that, I headed up to bed and peeked in on Ella before going into my room and slipping on some shorts to sleep in. The windows were open, and I listened to the waves crashing against the sand as my eyes dropped closed.
I showered and headed to the office before the girls were up, leading the meeting smoothly before I went to get a second cup of coffee. I turned my computer on and pulled up the website that I was going to post the ad on. It was strictly for childcare and came highly recommended by parents in the building. I wrote out the ad, looking it over to make sure that I was clear about what I nodded before posting it to the page.
Chapter 1: Riley
I came in after my last class, exhausted from my long day. I worked all day on the project that I had coming up due, knowing that it would barely get me by. I did that as well as working at a bookstore to save up for online school down the line. It was the only form of retail that I could stand and keep my sanity and the writing was fun, just not well-paying.
“Let’s look for a job,” I murmured as I warmed up the computer. I reached for a chocolate from my emergency bowl, slipping the chunk of sweet goodness into my mouth as I waited. My computer was old, and I was also saving money for a new laptop. I had a few sites that I checked regularly and selected the child care postings first. My sister had two small kids, and I adored them when I made it to Carlsbad to visit. I had spent a lot of time sitting as a teenager and had experience with kids. Why not take a look? I loved every child that I ever met, from infants to the late ages of the single digits. That would be a perfect job to take classes at night if it paid well enough and I wouldn’t work nearly entire days any longer. I clicked on the most recent posts and scanned down the page as I bit into another piece of chocolate.
WANTED: Live in nanny to care for my daughter full-time. I want someone professional and long-term for mostly days as well as some nights. The person that I hire will be compensated very well and have a large living space to assure them privacy. Call me at 210-989-5545 if you’re interested in the position and we’ll have an informal interview before moving on to the next step. Serious inquiries only.
Huh. That sounded like a strict environment, but it included a living space. It paid well from what the person suggested and could work out very well for me. I glanced at the clock and decided to call in the morning since it was after ten o'clock at night now. I read some other ads but kept coming back to the first one and once I started yawning, I put the computer to sleep and locked up my tiny apartment. Walking back into my cozy bedroom, I turned on the TV and dressed in my oversized shirt for bed. I snuggled under the sheet and watched a late-night talk show as long as I could before I passed out for the night.
My alarm went off at seven, so I could start on the project before I worked at the bookstore again tonight. First came coffee, and I brewed a strong cup before walking back to wash my face and use the bathroom. I slipped on some leggings under the shirt and tugged my caramel curls into a messy bun. I decided to call about the nanny position at nine, so the mother or father would be awake for the day. I had no idea how old the little girl was and frowned as I took the first sip from my cup. I started on the data entry, singing along to the streaming radio station that played in the background. I kept looking at the clock in my kitchen, getting nervous about the call as the clock approached the time I decided to call. I made some oatmeal a few minutes before and slowly ate it as I considered what to say. I took a big drink of coffee before reaching for my cell phone and checking the number on my monitor again. Dialing it, I took a deep breath and leaned back in the seat.
“Nathan Jameson,” a clipped voice came through the receiver as I widened my eyes.
“Good morning, Mr. Jameson. I was calling about the nanny position. Is it still available?” My voice was shaky, and I wondered how a man’s voice could affect me this much. I didn’t even think about guys with my schedule.
“Yes, it is. Who am I speaking to?” He seemed to relax a bit as I smiled.
“My name is Riley Corning.”
“What experience do you have with children, Miss Corning?” I heard the serious tone in his voice and sipped my coffee again.
“I used to watch the kids of neighbors and members of my mama’s church beginning in my early teens until I moved here two years ago. Since then, I have helped my sister with her two daughters. Jada and Ally are five and three and handfuls, but I adore them.” I smiled at the thought of the kids, jumping when he spoke again, asking how old I was. “I am twenty-three, Mr. Jameson.”
“Well, you could keep up with my daughter. She is incredibly active,” he said with warmth in his voice as I smiled.
“How old is she?” I asked softly, walking over to my couch to get more comfortable.
“Ella is two. Her birthday was two months ago,” he told me as I leaned back and closed my eyes. “Would you be comfortable with that age, Miss Corning?”
“Very much so. I spend a lot of time with my nieces. They only live over in Carlsbad,” I offered as I waited for his answer.
“What is it that you do now?”
“I work at The Corner Book Nook and do some freelance work on the side. I am hoping to save up enough money to take some online classes. I moved here when my mom died from cancer to be with my sister since she’s all I have now.” My voice lowered as I thought about Mama for a moment. I missed her so much.
“I am sorry for your loss” I thanked him and waited for him to continue, not wanting to talk about Mama anymore. “You sound busy. Are those jobs that you’re willing to give up?”
“Of course. Your ad sounded wonderful to me.” I knew that I was gushing and bit my lip as I fought back a laugh.
“You sound like you have your head on your shoulders unlike most of the sitter’s I’ve used before, as well as some potential nannies that I have spoken to. Could you come for an interview, Miss Corning?” My mouth dropped open, and I pressed my hand to my chest as I took a deep breath.
“Yes, I’d love to.”
“What is your schedule like today?” He pressed as I raised a fist into the air.
“I don’t work at the store until six o'clock. I am free any time before that.” I waited quietly, ready to go over there as so
on as he was ready.
“I can be at my home for lunch where we could sit down and talk. You could get a feel of things that way. How does one work for you?” I wanted to scream, but I merely told him that I’d be there. Mr. Jameson gave me an address that I jotted down before ending the call and dancing around my living room. I hurried back to take a shower, so my hair would have time to dry in loose curls while I finished getting ready.
I called my sister and talked to her on the speaker as I chose my outfit and make up for the day. Emery was happy for me, agreeing that I’d be perfect for the job. I was one of the few people that she and her husband trusted with the girls. We chatted about them once I told her as much as I could about the job until Emery let out a low whistle. “You said that Nathan Jameson is his name?” She asked as I told her that it was.
“If this is the same guy, he owns one of the most successful graphic design companies in the world. That and he’s gorgeous,” she added as I laughed.
“I am sure that he’s married, Em. They probably work.” That was so common these days.
“Maybe he is but maybe he isn’t. You have to call me when you get home.” I promised her that I would before ending the call and slipping into the dark purple sheath dress that I’d decided to wear. I paired it with black hose and cute, chunky heels before I looked in the mirror. My hair was crazy around my shoulders and I reached for a tie to pull it into a low ponytail, allowing a few strands to frame my face. My makeup was neutral today with just a hint of purple on my eyes and some light pink gloss on my lips. I grabbed my purse and keys, running out to my old Camry to go find his house. If my sister was right, it must be a mansion. I punched the address into my phone and headed to the freeway where I drove towards the beach in La Jolla. I didn’t get the chance to come here too often and glanced around at the light with a smile.
