So she waited, holding her breath, so that once he finally did speak, the air rushed out of her lungs in a relieved whoosh.
“Always,” he told her, locking her in place with his eyes. “Always, Delaney.”
“What’s your plan, Lissa?” Sanzie said, reminding them both of her presence.
With her overwhelming fear for Trystan, she hadn’t had much time to think of what to do next, but now a thought formed and she latched on to it. It wasn’t like they had many options, or many allies, even with those loyal to the Zane.
“We wait for Trystan to wake up,” she told them, “and once he does, we go pay the Basilissa a visit.”
She risked a glance at Ruckus, wanting his approval, his support. He knew more about all this than she did, and if they were going to succeed, they needed to be together. She turned back to Trystan. All of them.
“I’m sure she’d want to hear her about her daughter’s death,” Ruckus agreed in his smooth voice. “And about who is ultimately responsible.”
“And then?” Sanzie asked.
Delaney thought about everything that had happened the past month, and everything that had taken place prior. She pictured Magnus Ond and Pettus, and even Olena. Stared at Trystan. The Rex was the reason for all this, and he wasn’t done.
“Then”—she met their gazes head-on, hand tightening on Trystan’s arm—“we do whatever it takes.”
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
BOOK TWO! I can’t believe it. So many people had a hand in making this book what it is, and I’m incredibly grateful and indebted to every single one of them.
I want to start by thanking Holly, my editor, who has had so much faith in me and these characters throughout this whole process. I don’t know what I did in a past life to deserve you! You always know exactly what needs to be altered, expanded, etc., and your love for Trystan always makes me really excited to write more of him. You’re also an amazingly sweet human being, and I’m glad I got to finally meet you in person. Thanks again for the Funko Pop! That pretty much makes you a (much nicer) Basilissa in my mind!
Thanks to Lauren, Emily, Teresa, and all the other fantastic Swoon Reads staff members I was able to meet. I’m sorry I can’t list you all! I feel so honored to have met you, and to be able to call myself a Swoon Reads author. I know many of you also had a hand in shaping this book, and I appreciate all the notes and corrections you took the time to make.
I also want to thank Liz D. for another amazing cover. I mean, seriously. I stare at it sometimes like a weirdo.
Thanks to my aunts, Grace and Irene, for supporting me by buying copies and taking the time to read the book. It means a lot that you did! And thank you to the rest of my family for standing in my corner, even on those days where I’m editing and a serious monster to be around (sorry, Daniel).
Thanks to my mom and dad especially, for still being okay with my career choice, and taking the time to read my books. Mom, I still can’t believe you read the first draft of this book seven times … that’s … really strange. I don’t think I’ve even read it seven times. I don’t think I ever will read it seven times. Despite the fact that I got sick of talking about it with you, I’m really glad you loved it that much. Your opinion means the world to me.
Jon and Josie, you guys are the best. I honestly couldn’t ask for better best friends. Thanks to Whitney, for letting me come visit in Vermont with my laptop in the middle of a deadline, and for not caring when I spent a good chunk of my time on it. Thanks, Vicky, Kat, Genevieve, Sarah, Tracy, and all my other friends who bought the first book and sent me photos.
Thanks to some awesome people who read the first book and reached out to me, like Marissa from Burning Bright Library (I still can’t get over those candles!), and Mary Ellen (that mug, though). Also, thanks to Kayleigh, who didn’t help with this book, but has helped with some other projects of mine! I can always count on you to be honest!
Mary Ellen, I am so happy to have met you! Thanks for always responding to my messages about how stressed I am, or how much I like or dislike a book!
Like with everything, thanks to Matt and Lisa.
Finally, thanks to everyone who picked up a copy of this book—or one of my past books. I definitely couldn’t have done any of this without readers actually wanting to get more of the story. If you’ve ever left a review, commented, followed me on Instagram, etc., thank you so much. You have no idea how much hearing from you all means to me.
