The Wolf With The Silver Smile (The Silver Series) Page 14

by Samantha Bates

Mitch lay back down and tried desperately to go back to sleep, but it wasn't happening in part due the headache that was starting to kick in. Twenty minutes later when the phone rang, he answered on the first ring.

  "Hello."

"Mitch, why the hell did I wake up to find a message in lipstick on my mirror?" Well at least Bastian had been woken up in a better way than he had.

  "What does it say?"

"You won't believe me but what the hell, this is it verbatim 'dear boss man, Mitch can't come in to play for a few days, he is on special business for the strongest Goddess, lots of love War' and get this there's a PS, you need more women in your team.' Is someone taking the piss?"

"You better hope she isn't listening." There was a serious not to his words, Mitch knew War would not be impressed by Bastian's attitude.

"Er I think she is listening there's a new message appearing it says 'I can hear you, I knew you would be strong and virile, we should play sometime' who can hear me Mitch?" Mitch was laughing; you had to admit Athena was amusing.

"You won't like it Bastian, Athena the Goddess of War is listening and turns out she's a feminist and maybe a little horny, and you oh strong and virile one, can have her."

"Shit, I don't want to play with War, please don't tell me there's going to be a war." The implication had dawned on Bastians.

"She is not planning on one, but I have to go stay with the wolves."

Mitch was already getting dressed there was no time like the present to head over to the wolves. "Do you need any help Mitch?"

With a hefty sigh, Mitch picked up some clothes. "I have no idea, I will let you know."

He left his apartment heading to the underground car park to fetch his motorcycle, he loved the feeling of zipping down the highway, the wind in his wings, well… if he had his wings on earth it would be.

Pulling his cell out of his pocket he dialed Lucky's number. Before she married Ben and had the triplets they had worked together as part of the Paranormal Task Force. Lucky had been recruited following a recommendation from her then Police Lieutenant, while Mitch had been sent to be part of the task force by the Gods for some unknown reason that involved Lucky.

When Lucky had met Ben, she was being stalked and the PTF was involved in stopping a black magic witch from running a fighting club. Unfortunately, what they didn't know until too late was that the same witch was also kidnapping and selling humans as well as dating Lucky's ex-husband. The Goddess of Destiny had given him a vial to give to Lucky; this vial brought her ex-husband back from the dead when he was killed in the fight, however he was then called to the Goddess of Destiny for some higher purpose that no-one knew about.

Apparently Lucky had some sort of involvement in the order of the world, and Mitch was of course on Earth to do the God's and Goddesses bidding and keep this higher purpose from being screwed over.

"Hey Mitch this is early for you, or are you just getting in?" Why Lucky sounded cheerful at this ungodly morning hour was beyond him.

"Why do you sound chirpy at six am?" Lucky was a great woman and fun to be around.

"The boys have been up for the past thirty minutes and I am always happy, you should know that."

"Is Ben still in bed or not?" Mitch wasn't sure how Silver's Alpha would respond to him coming to stay.

"He is in the shower why?" Luckys tone was questioning which did not surprise.

"I am heading out to speak to you and Ben; I am on a mission for them up top and would rather not get eaten by the wolves when I arrive."

Laughing Lucky was always happy to hear from Mitch. "You know full well that they don't eat people when they arrive, just when they won't leave. Don't worry they will let you in, it's always good to know the Gods and Goddesses are watching. And of course it's always lovely to have you visit just don't encourage my girls to leer at you, that warrior magnetism works every time."

"You know me Princess, I always thought of you as a MILF."

Mitch heard a noise in the background before Ben interrupted. "You may be a warrior for the God's but I will still rip your throat out if you flirt with my wife, a dangerous thing to do when you are about to come visit, don't you think?"

Mitch didn't get the chance to respond to Ben, who had obviously picked up the phone extension but Lucky just laughed. "Ignore the caveman Mitch, we will see you soon." She was still laughing as she hung up.

  Chapter 15

Although Ben was so easy to rile up, Mitch genuinely liked him and had stood with his pack fighting the enemy once before, it seemed he would stand with them again. Mitch had no problem getting through Silver's guards; though he noticed the additional guards on the gate and saw a few wolves prowling around a little more than normal. He knew that had he not been permitted entry, nothing short of a bomb would get him through.

Pulling the bike up outside Ben and Lucky's house, Mitch was not surprised to see Theo and Connor waiting for him; both were Ben's next in command. Connor managed the security within the pack's many businesses, while Theo managed the physical training of the pups as well as the packs security. Both were mighty men, but it was Theo who scared him and Mitch did not scare easily. Theo was just menacing, he had at some point suffered quite serious burns to one side of his face although you couldn’t see the scars as the majority of them were overshadowed by the tattoo's covering that side of his face. He shook hands with both men.

"No lightening following you around this morning Mitch, you must have been a good boy." Mitch knew Connor was curious about him and clearly remembered the last time they met, he knew the Gods and Goddesses watched and listened to him and so every time he said something derogatory about them a bolt of lightning shot from the sky, always landing way too close to him for comfort.

"Not so far but it's early yet."

Lucky came out to greet him, he swallowed her in a hug and knew without looking that Ben was close by when growling hit his ears. The boys also came out and were as usual very boisterous and excitable. He could never tell Ethan and Oliver apart, but Logan always stood in front of him staring before putting his arms out to be picked up. He had done so from being small and this was the only way he could tell Logan from his brother's.

Mitch had always wondered what Logan saw but the child was too small to tell him, or had been. Mitch watched him come over to stand about two feet in front of him, but instead of lifting his arms out he looked towards Ben.

"Pretty light, Logan want wings Daddy, please." Lucky stopped talking to Theo and all eyes turned towards Logan who had now put his arms out to Mitch. "What does he mean Mitch?"

Ruffling Logan's dark hair, no one on Earth knew that when he was in the heavens he had wings, large glorious wings the exact colors of his hair. Due to his coloring this made him stand out even in the heavens where most had wings of one color.

"It seems this little man can see me as I am when I return home, can't you Logan?"

Ben came to stand near Mitch and his son. "What does that mean Mitch, why can he see you?"

"I have no idea and I am not sure they would tell me even if I asked. Apparently everything seems to be a need to know basis, and I rarely need to know what's going on, why would I?"

And with that, the lightning hit right in front of his feet, Ben clearly had no issue with angering the Gods as Mitch watched him look up to the sky bellowing in anger.

"Watch where you are aiming that lightening, I don't give a damn who you are or what you can do, if that touches one of my kids, I will find a way to get up there and give you a dose of your own medicine."

Mitch knew that if he had ever threatened the Gods or Goddesses like that he would be in a whole heap of pain knowing that the lightening would most certainly hit him.

"Ben, they would never have hurt Logan." Mitch thought he would attempt to appease the Goddesses and Gods, but no sooner had he said the words than a flock of doves flew around them landing on the shoulders of all of the boys and Ben. God damn, he got lightning and Ben got dove
s, this was a screwy world.

"Apology accepted. Let's go inside." Ben started shepherding the other boy's inside the house while Mitch carried Logan.

"I called Nicky and Morgan, they are about to arrive." He loved the wolves' superior hearing, he also liked their attempt particularly when Ben continued cooking breakfast and Mitch was pleased to see coffee waiting. Mitch took a seat at the huge table, with this large a family it needed to be a huge table and this one seated fifteen people.

"Is your house always this busy at this time in the morning?" Ben laughed; he and Mitch had put all of the food on the table and sat down to get first helpings.

"Only when there are sales on in the mall or there is some threat to the pack."

Mitch joined his laughter. "Well I would be mighty pissed to be sent to help with clothes shopping, so I assume we are talking of a threat to the pack." Ben didn’t get a chance to fill him in as people started to arrive, Lucky was the first to join them entering and kissing the top of Ben's head.

"Your mom's picked up the boys and is taking them to help with the horses."

Mitch looked over at Nicky who was leading a young female in, she was quite petite and the word cute suited her. He was surprised to see Nicky put a protective arm around her as he saw Mitch. Inside Mitch laughed, he and Nicky had been out together on occasions and both were a hit with the females, obviously Nicky didn't want Mitch sniffing around this one. How interesting were his thoughts as he watched Nicky protecting an unknown female.

"I was surprised when Ben said you were coming over, what do you know?" Nicky was always direct but never this direct, nor had he ever been interested in pack business.

"Let the man eat son." This came from Leyland, Ben and Nickys father. Zachariah was with him and he watched him go over and kiss the girl with Nicky on the cheek.

"I heard from Leyland what happened yesterday, you are as brave as I originally thought." Mitch watched her cheeks flush at Zachariah's words.

Another face joined them; one that Mitch knew would result in fireworks from Theo.

"Why are you here Imogen?" The tall and thin female was staring at Theo defiantly, with her dark brown almost black eyes, she had hair that flowed down her back you couldn't say the exact color of her hair, it was some many different shades of brown with little hints of red.

"I am here to help." Imogen was now staring at Theo across the room, her eyes challenging and hostile.

"No you're not, go home please." She continued to look at him waiting for a fight.

"No I'm staying." Theo sighed at her words.

"Let's go outside and talk about this Imogen."

"No." At her response he looked straight at her. "Theo I am not leaving, you said that this was a home for me and Celia for as long as we wanted, we have been here for nearly four years. These people may be your family, but they are my friends. I have been training hard for years; I want to be involved in this, so I stay."

Theo moved towards Imogen, suddenly Mitch watched him stop though clearly he wasn't happy and Mitch suspected Ben had spoken to him telepathically.

"Imogen you are always welcome to join us." When the Alpha spoke, Imogen looked gingerly at Theo and offered him a weak smile; Mitch was surprised when Theo smiled back at her.

He was then glancing to Morgan and then Nicky taking a guess at the situation. "I take it that you're the one being protected from some dude who calls himself Lucifer."

Morgan's eyes widened as she grabbed Nicky's hand under the table. He squeezed back gently.

"Don't worry Pixie, Mitch is a warrior for the Gods, he's one of the good guys."

"I've never heard of God warriors." Her eyes were wide at the disclosure.

"Not many people have Pixie; I am truly one of a kind here on Earth, a very sensual one of a kind I might add." He winked at her and then Nicky who was frowning.

"Don't start Mitch, I don't give a shit who you work for, her name is Morgan and that is all you will call her. You don't need to wink, smile, or stand any closer to her than six feet." Nicky's jealousy was a shock for everyone in the room, as no-one had seen this side of Nicky before.

"Whoa there wolf, no offence intended I just wanted to see how reliable you are going to be." He watched Morgan frown.

  "I don't understand."

Ben cleared his throat. "Gentlemen, can we leave the pissing contest behind. Morgan, Mitch needed to see how strongly Nicky feel's for you as this will help him judge how deep into this Nicky will go."

As Morgan looked between this Mitch and Nicky, she was surprised at how confident and relaxed she now felt in front of these people, feelings that continued to be a strange emotion for her.

"Well, I would rather Nicky wasn't involved at all. In fact I would rather everyone I cared about had no involvement in this, although I don't think that is going to happen."

Mitch started to speak. "I think you are right Morgan, anyhow, Ben apparently I am going to be staying with you for a few days if that is alright." Before anyone could say anything he carried on. "This Lucifer has really upset the Goddess of War, she really doesn't like him and therefore she has decided that she will help you deal with him."

"Is there a reason she doesn't like him? I would have thought she would have appreciated a good fight." Ben was peering at Mitch, his question demonstrating his curiosity.

"I wished you hadn't asked." Mitch looked at Lucky, Imogen and then Morgan before he continued.

"It appears that the Goddess of War is a feminist and she does not like how this Lucifer treats women."

Lucky started laughing, Imogen had a smug smile on her face, Morgan sat a little straighter as she listened intently, and Ben's two female wolf warriors were nudging each other. Mitch knew Lucky would like the notion and make the most of it.

"I have to say I do like these Goddesses, I think I might set up a shrine to worship her, what about in the bedroom Ben?"

"Mitch unlike my wife, I am not sure I like these Goddesses of yours." Ben was however smiling, and as Lucky went to walk past his chair he grabbed her, pulled her onto his lap and kissed her hard.

"Just you remember that men have more than one use and are more than the stronger sex." As Lucky made to protest he kissed her again, "of course I am only kidding."

Imogen looked to Theo before looking at Lucky." I think I would like to meet this Goddess." At Imogen's words Theo was tsking under his breath when Mitch responded.

"I think you might just get that opportunity, she seems to find Theo amusing." As Theo looked up sharply, Mitch just shrugged. "Don't ask me."

"Can we keep to the subject at hand please?" Nicky was agitated; he needed to progress and come up with a plan, thankfully his words immediately focused on Mitch.

"Sorry I digress, anyway she has decided that as much as she likes a war she wants to make sure the right team wins, and maybe teach this Lucifer a lesson."

Having a goddess on side had to be a good thing; well Nicky hoped it was. "What are you meant to do while you are here Mitch?"

Nicky actually liked Mitch, which he would continue to do as long as Mitch stayed away from Morgan. For some reason the women loved Mitch, as soon as Beth and Claire woke up they would go all glassy eyed and try not to stare at him. He personally couldn't see the attraction though what did he know.

"Apparently I just get to wait for further instructions, but in the mean time I am more than happy to pull my weight, if everyone is happy for me to stay."

Zachariah looked at Ben, Ben looked at Mitch.

"You stay." Ben made the decision before turning to Zachariah.

"Zachariah I wonder if you have ever heard of a telepathic link occurring between two people prior to mating."

"I have not heard of any confirmed occurrences, but there are stories from old that mention the possibility of this sort of thing happening."

He looked straight at Morgan and smiled with a gentle look on his face. "I believe that if it did happen it would be a gift not to be ignored." />
"But what does it mean, now is not the time to be cryptic, we need as much information as possible." Morgan could see that Ben was trying to balance his role of Alpha, with the responsibility of protecting the pack against his friendship, and respect for Zachariah.

She knew Nicky would not speak out unless she did, he would not tell her story without her permission yet these people were willing to put their lives on the line for her.

"My dad is a part of an Order, it is called 'True Believers' the group practices the worshiping of Lucifer, and considers him to be the light against God's darkness."

Morgan went onto explain how the group practiced, as well as their beliefs and the role of women in the group (this caused some uproar even from the men). Even though she didn't talk about her own circumstances, Nicky seemed to know when she was finding it hard and took over for a while. As she finished she explained that Lucifer planned to marry her, and that was what finally prompted her brother to get her away.
