Game of Vampires: A Reverse Harem Serial (Part Four) Page 5

by Rosette Bolter

Before she had much time to catch her breath or reflect on what she was going to say to Moldark when she finally saw him, the horses were crashing through New Haven Plantation’s front gates and sailing along the grounds at rapid speed. They quickly moved past the main building and then by the dome shaped enclosure, all the way out to the furthest stretches of the land.

As the horses came to a stop Theresa sprang off to the ground, the barbarian rider lashing out at her. Moldark glanced over as she raced along towards him, signaling to the men not to follow her. He then turned around again and Theresa saw where he was facing. The edge of a great chasm was only meters away from where he stood, its drop ever reaching and its rivers sparkling and perilous.

As she approached Moldark, Theresa looked up to the sky and saw the moon was out and full, its never-ending light showering them.

“So,” Moldark said in a gravelly voice. “You’ve come.”

  “I had to,” Theresa said.

“You make so many assumptions, don’t you Theresa,” he said without looking at her. “Assumptions about who I am and what I might feel for you.”

Theresa looked down, ashamed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“We could have had everything, you and I,” Moldark said. “I had found your sacred flower. The peace between vampires and humans could have continued without suffering. Instead, our two kinds will always be at war.”

“Moldark,” Theresa gasped in the wind. “Look at me. I’m one of you. It has consumed me.”

Moldark turned his head slightly. Then his eye caught hers and he whirled around.

“What is this I’m looking at?” he demanded. “Have you not given yourself completely over to the evil twins in exchange for lust?”

Theresa shook her head. “You’re wrong. You don’t know how wrong you are! You’re the one making assumptions about me.”

He studied her. “Do they know you’re here?”

Theresa shook her head. “We set the Necromancer free. She turned them into birds.”

  “And what of this Necromancer?”

“They’re not as bad as what’s been said. I think they’ve both been awfully fair.”

“You have a lot of explaining to do,” he scolded.

Theresa shook her head. She walked over to him. Took his hands. “I don’t. You know, I don’t. Because if you love me, then you’ll know I love you and have not betrayed you. What you saw wasn’t me. I was bewitched by them. And their evil powers have deceived you.”

Moldark looked down at her hands.

He was silent for a while.

“Nothing has to change,” Theresa said. “We can be together. Lord Fane is dead. The Princess is alive and we will deal with her. We will stop her from enslaving us common folk and you will go and find more bloodflowers to bring peace across the lands.”

  “I don’t know if I,” Moldark began.

“It’s okay,” Theresa said. “We will work it out. Together.”

They looked into each other’s eyes.

Then Moldark reached out to the back of her head and pulled her lips towards his. His strong hands moved across her body feeling her all over as they kissed. His mouth searing. Her body aching. Each of them starving for each other’s love…

And perhaps it was here that things could close.

  That the night could end.

With nothing but a perfect forecast for the two vampire lovers.

But then as their lips parted, something troublesome lurked in Moldark’s expression…

  “What is it?” Theresa asked.

He stepped away from her. Edged further.

“Someone’s here,” he whispered. “You’ve been followed.”

He took a few more steps, Theresa turning, trying to see where his eyes were going.

  Then she saw it.

  A solider.

A creature covered head to toe with body armor and weaponry. He was advancing towards them.

Moldark’s men approached them cautiously from their horses.

  “Who goes there?” they demanded.

The soldier stood there, motionless, as the horses moved back and forth.

“Identify yourself at once, or prepare to die.”

  Again, he remained still.

Moldark’s men drew their axes at the same time. But before either of them could even lift the weapons above their heads, arrows from the dark were unleased, killing them where they stood.

Twenty, fifty, seventy – a crazy number of arrows.

One minute they were both upright and fine.

The next moment both men and their horses were on the ground dead.

The soldier remained where he was.

Moldark drew his sword out and advanced across the grass towards him. But as Theresa marched along with him she began to see all the glowing eyes begin to light up. Not just a few. Hundreds.

  They were completely surrounded.

Moldark whirled around to face Theresa. “WHAT DID YOU DO?” he shouted at her.

  “Me?” she protested.

There was a look of fear in his eyes.

He grabbed her and wrestled her to the ground just as the arrows came sailing down on them. Moldark screamed as his body was showered with them.

  “No!” Theresa squealed. “Stop it!”

Moldark’s mouth opened, black blood seeping from it. He tried to speak but couldn’t.

And then he was ripped away from her.

The soldier had Moldark by his arm, forcing him across the grass.

His turquoise cape flapping about in the breeze.

“ENOUGH!” Theresa screamed. “YOU’RE KILLING HIM!”

The soldier pushed Moldark along until there was nowhere else to push him.

Moldark collapsed to his knees, gasping for air.

A hollow, apathetic laugh echoed from within the suit of armor.

Theresa raged at the soldier, pulling at his cape but he quickly caught her wrist and ran his blade across it.

Theresa caught her hand falling down beside Moldark, nursing her wound.

The soldier took his helmet off and let it fall to the ground between them.

“I tried to warn you,” Lafayette said to Theresa. “True evil is not so obvious.”

He lifted Moldark up and then pushed him off the cliff.

  “Until he shows his face.”
