“What?” Hazel was now worried her mother would go back on it.
“Bee was there and heard it all. We have to go now for the bus, but I’ll call you tomorrow and we’ll start making arrangements for the wedding. I want to marry you as soon as possible.” The words had slipped out of his mouth and they almost shocked him. Now he wasn’t afraid, or unprepared for marriage. He wanted to be married, but only to Hazel. No longer did he want to enjoy his own company for an extended period of time. He wanted to be with the woman he loved.
“I can scarcely believe it.”
“Am I moving too quickly?”
“Nee, not at all. This is wunderbaar. What did my mother say?”
“I’ll tell you on the way to the bus station. Bee is waiting in the buggy and we have to find Luke.”
When Hazel got home after they’d taken Isaac to the bus station, she was prepared for her mother to say she had second thoughts about her marrying. She found her mother lying in bed.
“How are you feeling, Mamm?” She sat on the edge of her bed.
“Excited for you and Isaac.”
“Really?”
“I like him a lot.”
Hazel heaved a sigh of relief.
“He told me how he feels about you.”
“Will you come to live with us?”
“I think that would make sense, if you don’t mind having me there. I don’t want to be under your feet when you’re newly married. Perhaps I’ll stay here for a time and then live with you and Isaac?”
Hazel could scarcely believe it. Tears came to her eyes. “He said we could have a cat, or even two. I never was allowed to have one.”
“Ah, a cat. There’s nothing like animals to make a house into a home, and of course, kinner.”
“I hope we’ll have plenty of them.”
“Gott has blessed you with a gut mann. There’s no reason you won’t have many kinner.”
The next morning, Hazel stayed by the phone in the barn and waited for Isaac’s call. It felt as though she was living someone else’s life. It had been so long since anything good had come her way. When the phone rang, she picked it up after one ring. “Hello?”
“It’s me.”
“Hi.”
“How’s your mudder today?”
“Still going along with the plan.”
“And you?”
“I’m fine.”
“And are you still on-board with the plan?”
She giggled. “Of course I am.”
“Good. I’ve already spoken to the bishop and we can have our wedding in six weeks here in Lancaster. You and your mudder can stay at my parents’ haus, a day, a week, or however long you need to before the wedding.”
“That soon?”
“Jah. I told you I want to marry you as soon as I can. I love you, Hazel.”
Those were the words she’d longed to hear. “And I love you.”
“Gott brought us together.”
“I know.”
“I’m going to build onto my haus so your mudder can have a separate space.”
“For real?”
“Jah. It’ll be done by the time we’re married.”
“That’s wunderbaar. She’ll be so happy.”
Isaac loved to hear Hazel’s voice and couldn’t wait to see her again. He’d have to organize another visit before their wedding. “Now I’ll have to tell my folks about us getting married. They’ll be excited. So will my brothers.”
“I hope so.”
“They will. My mudder really likes you. So does Dat, and you know Benjamin does.”
Hazel giggled and it filled Isaac’s heart with joy as he imagined her laughter ringing through their home and bringing peace and comfort. “I know your life hasn’t been easy, Hazel, but that stops today. I’ll do everything I can, and with Gott’s help, you’ll have a good life with me.”
“I know it, Isaac, I just know it.”
At the same time, Isaac and Hazel sent up silent prayers of thanks to God for finding them each their perfect partner.
