  CHAPTER 1. NUMB

Blessed Oaks Grove ~ Amazon Rainforest, Brazil.

  BRINA.

  “Don’t call me that!”

One by one the villagers came.

Men, women and even children gathered outside Cyn’s hut, got down on one knee, and placed their right hands over their hearts. Their heads bowed while they offered their respect to the High Priestess. My heart constricted in response. They had done this every day since I arrived. They spent hours outside the hut. Some stayed all day, or until Cyn walked out and offered them a blessing. They came with the hope of catching a glimpse of me, of getting to know the first woman ever to be born of a blessed family.

The first High Priestess to ever exist.

Every time, I stayed inside the hut and watched them from the window. I remained hidden, just out of reach. I couldn’t bring myself to face them. It was too much. I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t sure if I would ever be.

It had been almost three months since Grandpa had been murd… since he had left. The thought only increased the pain I felt inside me, pulsing and filling every single cell in my body with anguish, and rage. The Romans had done this. They had taken Grandpa away from me.

  “They killed my parents.”

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, my hand tightened its grip on the windowsill, and I prayed. I prayed to a Goddess I didn’t know. In a village that wasn’t my home, surrounded by people who weren’t my family. But I still prayed. I prayed that this anger would disappear. That I could find a way to forgive the Romans like Cyn wanted me to, and that the pain that consumed me would ease its ruthless attempt to incinerate my heart. All I could feel was this insatiable need for justice. They would pay for what they did.

I took a settling breath as the rage arose inside me.

  I didn’t know who I was anymore.

I willed myself to calm down, and my eyes settled on the villagers once more. I wasn’t sure what they wanted from me, but I wasn’t their High Priestess. I wasn’t Brina or even Briana. Something had happened to me that day. I wasn’t quite sure what it was but the way I had reacted… Tornadoes had erupted out of thin air, guided by my grief.

I mean, what the hell was that?

I still remembered the screams as the Romans and Warriors hit the trees, and skipped over the ground. The Warriors that had gone there to help me. To save me. They had gotten hurt because I had lost control of a power I didn't even know I had.

  “I hurt Eisha.”

I had barely seen her since that day. I knew she was okay because Cyn and Art had reassured me, but I hadn’t spoken to her. She had gone to Winter Solstice ceremony, but through the short time I was there she never approached me. When I went looking for her, she turned around and left. I felt terrible about what I had done. The worst part was I hadn’t had a chance to apologize. I couldn’t blame her for not wanting to see me, though. I would even understand if she hated me.

She has every right to hate me.

My eyes absentmindedly followed Cyn’s progress as he stood in front of the people gathered outside. He smiled at them and placed his hands on the heads of the two closest to him. His lips moved while he spoke the blessing. His hands briefly glowed, and the light passed on to the villagers. They stood, and the woman kissed his hand, then they walked away. He smiled at the next two and continued the blessings. Slowly, the people left. Not without throwing a last glance my way, with the hope to still see me. They would be back tomorrow. A woman and her three daughters stood after Cyn blessed them and looked straight at me. I wasn’t sure if she could see me through the wood shutters that covered the window, but she seemed to stare right at me. A mix of pain, and disapproval shadowed her face. Even without knowing me, she was already disappointed in me.

  “So am I.”

This wasn’t me. I didn’t hide from things. I wasn’t a coward, but the truth was I wasn’t sure how to be brave right now.

I lowered my gaze from hers, wrapping my fingers around the clan medallions that hung from my neck. The mighty Bear, and Queen Bee. They carried a heavier weight than they had been created to, and I felt it with every breath.

“How can I ever become what Grandpa wanted me to be?”

I whispered not knowing the answer. How could I even come close to what I was supposed to be destined for? How would I ever do this without him? My heart tore at the thought. I missed Grandpa so much. A tear ran down my cheek, and warm lips brushed it away. My glistening eyes met Cyn’s as he sat next to me on the bed. I hadn’t noticed him come in. His gaze was tender, as usual. He'd been so patient with me. A sharp breath left me as his eyes looked straight into my soul.

“They shall understand, my Goddess. You need not blame yourself or feel inadequate. There is still a great deal for you to comprehend.” His fingers caressed my cheek, and my eyes closed. I reveled in his touch. “Much you have yet to learn about our people. Our customs. Our way of life.” I opened my eyes and gazed into his. They were filled with so much love that it hurt. “There is but one thing you must accept. You need not become who you already are. The greatness you fear you might not achieve, it is inside you. You need only let it be,” he said, knowing exactly what I was thinking… feeling. His fingers reached for the bear medallion, and he smiled at me. "You were born with it."

I rested my forehead on his, wishing I could have his conviction. See what he saw in me, yet all I could feel was my pain. Our connection stirred inside me, pulling us closer and letting us feel one another on a deeper level.

“Take me away from here. Please,” I whispered, feeling the walls close in on me.

A fleeting look of sadness entered his eyes. It disappeared instantly. He nodded, remaining silent. Knowing I had hurt him, only added to the pain. He wished I could see this place as my home, but it wasn't. It was a reminder of what they wanted me to be. Of what they expected from me, something I wasn't even sure I could give. A reminder of what I had lost.

Cyn’s arms wrapped around me and he lifted me from the bed. Before he took his first step, the portal opened. The stones instinctively responded to the magic inside him. His abilities still amazed me, and I was certain there was so much more to see.

The rich tones of the sunset mixed with the pink hues of the cherry blossoms clearing on the other side of the stones. This place had become my sanctuary. We sat on the fallen flowers that adorned the grass. His back rested against a tree trunk while he held me in his arms overlooking the lake. I held him close, wishing things were different. I didn’t want this pain. I didn’t want this future. I just wanted him. I needed him more than ever. His arms, his lips, and the peace that flowed through him and into me every time we touched. It was the only thing helping me keep myself together, if that was what I was doing. A tear rolled down my cheek, and his fingers lifted my chin.

“I am sorry, my Goddess. I am sorry you must go through these trials. I am here for you, and I shall always be.”

Cyn’s lips closed over mine softly. He kissed me in a way that almost made my heart whole again… almost. I held him close while he cupped my neck and our lip
s moved together. The waves of peace rolled through us, gently easing my pain. He placed a soft kiss on my forehead, and I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, hiding my face in his neck.

“I love you, my Goddess. Eternally.” Cyn whispered in my ear.

His hands wound around my waist and pulled me closer to him, while he laid our bodies on the flower-covered ground. I clung to him. Not wanting to let him and the brief relief he gave me, go. Nothing else mattered when I was in his arms. Nothing could hurt me. I was his, and he was mine, and in those precious minutes, it was all I needed to be able to breathe. His hands gently caressed the length of my back, while I looked into his eyes. The currents of energy coursed through us, in an endless intoxicating exchange. I laid still against his body, feeling him, and allowed him to engulf me in the addicting haze that only he could create. His fingers caressed my cheek slowly, and his lips claimed mine again.

“I need you,” I whispered on his lips and let go of everything else. I only needed him.

“You have me, my Goddess. You claimed my heart. For as long as my essence shall exist, I will belong to you… no one else.”

His arms wrapped around me and turned our bodies, and he laid my back on the ground. His lips began to create a trail down my neck, while his hands caressed my skin.
