I, Richard Plantagenet: Book One: Tante le Desiree Page 37

by J. P. Reedman

“God protect you, Ned,” I whispered quietly, informally to my brother, the King of England, and I kissed his hand with an almost frightened fierceness.

Then I donned my cloak and bonnet, and made hasty exit, and soon the grey, grim walls of London were behind me, and the cold, wintry but open fields of England lay ahead, and I breathed the February air in great gasps, chilling to the lungs yet so clean after London’s stench.

Weather permitting, I would reach York in the next week or so, and then I would strike out for Middleham, where I desired to be…at least until duty called me.

END OF PART ONE: I, RICHARD PLANTAGENET—TANT LE DESIREE
