  Chapter 1

“Sage, Syn, Mitchell, Shane, Tucker! Let’s go!” Evan yelled up the stairs.

“Need me to round them up, Evan?” Josh asked.

“No. They’ll come. What are you doing here?” Evan asked as he headed for the kitchen.

“Last time I checked, I still lived here, unless that changed since I went to work this morning,” Josh teased as he followed Evan.

“That’s not what I meant. Of course you still live here. I just didn’t expect to you see here. I figured you would head straight over to the pack house from work so you wouldn’t be late for the party.”

“Milo was covered in oil and didn’t want to go smelling like diesel. So we came home to shower and change.”

“The shop’s just about ready for its grand opening, right?” Evan asked as he grabbed a pie and placed it in a box.

“New Year’s. Well, the next day.” Josh laughed.

“January second,” Milo announced, walking into the kitchen, “and I expect your car to be the first one in the bay, Evan. I have been telling you for weeks now to bring it around so I could check that oil. Your transmission is starting to sound like it’s slipping, too.” Milo kissed Josh on the cheek and went to the coffeepot to pour himself a cup.

“I can check that out,” Tucker offered as he came running into the kitchen.

“I want Evan’s car completely winterized, so I’ll go over it first. You can help me out, and I’ll teach you what I mean,” Milo started to explain to Tucker.

“Hello. I am in the room, you know, and it’s my car we’re talking about,” Evan said in exasperation.

“Evan, I know we say, ‘Evan’s car,’ but that thing is an old, run-down mini school bus and it’s on its last leg. Why don’t you take Micah up on his offer and let him buy you a new car for the house? That Navigator he was talking about sounds sweet,” Tucker said.

“The alpha is already doing too much for us. He’s having the new extension put on the house so all of us can have our own space, plus completely separate living quarters for Maddy, Josh, and Milo. I can’t have him buying me a car, too. It’s not right. When I get enough saved, I’ll find something. Until then, I’ll let Milo have a look at it, but you will charge me. I pay my bills. You hear me?”

“Yes, Evan, but if I don’t see the Lost Boy Bus in my garage first thing in the morning on opening day, then I’ll know the truth,” Milo said and turned away. Josh shot him a confused look and Milo winked.

“The truth about what?” Evan asked.

“The truth that you don’t really trust me to fix the bus properly. You’ve just been trying to let me off easy by saying you forgot, but―”

“No, Milo,” Evan said, jumping out of his chair. “Of course I trust you to fix the bus. It’s just work and everything has been crazy. I promise old Bessy will be the first one there on opening day.”

“Good,” Milo said with a bright smile. “Now that we have that settled, how about we head ov
er to the pack house and celebrate Christmas?”

“I was just yelling for the other boys. I’ll go yell again.” Evan walked out of the room.

Josh and Tucker looked at Milo with shit-eating grins on their faces.

“You played him really good, babe.” Josh laughed.

Milo chuckled, then finished his coffee, and placed the empty cup in the sink. He turned and walked over to Josh and placed his hands on Josh’s hips. “Thanks. Wait till he finds out that I’m not charging anyone for any service on opening day.” Milo laughed.

“You’re not? Then how the hell are you supposed to make money and pay me?” Tucker asked.

Maddy walked in the door behind Tucker and smacked him in the back of the head. “Ow, you fuck.”

“Don’t get pissy with my mate, especially seeing as he was nice enough to give your sorry ass a job. What do you care if he charges people or not, as long as you get your paycheck?” Maddy admonished as he walked over to his mates and gave them each a kiss.

“Besides, with everything Evan has done for my mates, there is no way I was going to charge him anyway, and, as per the alpha’s orders, no one is to be charged opening day,” Milo informed him.

“You ready to go, baby? Or do you need to change?” Josh asked Maddy as he pulled him in for a kiss.

“I showered at the facility. I figured you two would need the one here. I just need to change my clothes.”

“Smells like Evan made pies,” Sage announced as he walked into the room.

“I did,” Evan answered as he joined them. “Jesse loves my apple and my cherry, so I figured it would be a nice gesture. Is everyone ready to go?”

“I just need to run up and change my clothes,” Maddy yelled out as he took off out of the room.

“Where’s Syn and Mitchell?” Sage asked, grabbing a pie.

“Syn’s on his way down, and Mitchell is out taking a walk,” Evan answered.

  “By himself?” Milo asked.

“You should know him by now, Milo. He’s quiet, and he likes to be alone,” Tucker chimed in.

  “Does he?” Milo inquired.

  “Does he what?”

“Does he actually like to be alone? Has he told you that? Maybe he really doesn’t like to be alone.”

“Mitchell has always kept to himself. I think he would like it if he could be around the others more. I know he’s loved the times he’s been a part of things that the boys have done, but Mitchell isn’t a leader or a joiner. He’s very shy and has a hard time even tailing along,” Evan explained.

“I’m gonna head out into the yard. I’ll wait outside for everyone.” Milo grabbed the two pies and headed outside.

“He’s a good man,” Evan noted.

“Who’s wasting his time,” Tucker added.

“He is not wasting his time. If he wants to go out and see if he can engage Mitchell in some conversation, then what’s the problem?” Josh argued.

“There’s no problem. I just think he’s wasting his time. You know how Mitchell is. He doesn’t really open up to anyone. It’s like he’s off in his own world most of the time.”

“Well, maybe Milo will have a little more success. He has a lot of patience with people, so he won’t give up on Mitchell so easily,” Josh said in praise.

Maddy ran into the room, tucking the back of his shirt into his slacks. “Ready. So, Tucker, why are you being a fucker?” Maddy smirked at him.

  “Suck me, asswipe.”

“Never. Plus, my mates would probably rip it off first.” Maddy laughed as Josh growled, walked over to him, wrapped his arms around Maddy, and pulled him close. “See.”

“Come on, everyone. Let’s go. We’re running late already. I heard that Shelby is back in town, and I’m hoping he’s at the party,” Sage said.

“Of course. You need to learn how to get your strip on―or off, as it may be.” Syn laughed.

“Shut your piehole and let’s go. Could you just imagine Taylor and Shelby in one room? And then there’s Raffy and cute little Noah. I can’t wait to get there,” Sage said with excitement.

They all headed out to the bus and stopped when they found Mitchell sitting behind the wheel, ready to drive. “Hey, guys. It’s about time you all got out here. Mitch and I were ready to leave you all here and head into the city for some fun. That new Star Wars movie is out, and I’m dying to see it,” Milo said in greeting as he gave them all a pointed look.

“Ooh, can we go tomorrow? I want to see that, too, but I don’t want to miss the alpha’s party.” Sage played along as he got on the bus and took a seat. Everyone followed.

“Tomorrow is Christmas, Sage. We can’t go on Christmas Day, but maybe the next day?” Evan said.

“Well, I didn’t hear Milo and Mitch invite any of us to go along, so whenever they go, it’s up to them,” Maddy added, “but all I’ll say is you better keep those hands off my mate, Mitch. I don’t want to have to slap you silly if you get fresh with Milo.”

Maddy laughed and made a face at Mitchell in the mirror. Mitchell’s worried face changed to a smiling face, and he blushed as he looked down at his lap.

“So, Mitch, start this baby up and let’s go. I heard Uncle Jesse made a chocolate fountain. Mmm. We can dip fruit in it, or maybe just open our mouths, stick out our tongues, and say ahh.”

Mitchell chuckled as he started the bus and put it in gear. He looked at Milo over his shoulder, gave him a grateful smile, and then turned back to face the front as he pulled down the driveway.

  * * * *

“Shit. I can’t believe we’re so late. This is not good. There’s fashionably late, and then there’s rude late, and we are rude late,” Sage said as they waited at the front door for someone to answer.

“Relax, Sage. They’ll understand that we had car trouble. It’s not a big deal,” Maddy offered.

Just then the door opened, and Jesse’s smiling face was greeting them. Next to him stood Cass and Nicco. Were they guarding him? Had there been a problem?

“Welcome, everyone. Merry Christmas,” Jesse said joyfully and kissed everyone on the cheek as they stepped inside. Cass and Nicco took coats and hung them in the closet. “We were starting to get a little worried. Is everything okay?”

“Yes, everything is fine, Jesse. We just got a flat on the way here,” Evan explained.

“Shit. I wish you would take Micah up on that Navigator, Evan.”

“Thank you, Jesse, but I like to pay my own way,” Evan said shyly.

Jesse put an arm around Evan’s waist and gave him a squeeze. “I totally understand that. You would be paying, just not a bank.”

“I know. It still doesn’t seem right.” Evan shrugged.

“Well, I’m not going to force you. The offer is always there, so if you ever need it, don’t hesitate to ask. Now, are those your apple and cherry pies I smell?” Jesse asked with a smile.

“Yes, they are. I’ll go run them into the kitchen, Uncle Jesse,” Maddy said.

“Thanks, Maddy. Come on, all of you. The party’s already going strong in the great room.”

Jesse led them toward the door. They all stopped at the entrance of the great room to look around at all the decorations and festivities. A massive tree stood against the far wall. It had to stand at least fifteen feet tall. It looked brilliant only decorated with a plethora of white lights and nothing more. The fireplace was covered in pine garland and white lights, and stockings of all shapes and sizes, with all the names of the occupants of the house on them, surrounded it. A large wreath hung on the brick wall above the fireplace, and red and white candles were scattered around the room.

A large table filled with all kinds of food was across the room toward the kitchen and another table stood off to the side with bottles of spirits lined up. Evan had to laugh as he caught a glimpse of Taylor in his Christmas outfit. Damn, that boy knew how to shock people, and he loved doing it. Sometimes Evan wished he had Taylor’s bravery, his confidence, or his ability to just say, “To hell w
ith everything else. I am who I am. Accept it or not.”

Sage let out an excited squeal and made his way over to Taylor. Evan watched as he hugged Raffy and Ash, but he noticed there was no sign of Noah here.

“Is Noah okay, Jesse? I see he and his mates aren’t here.”

“Yes, Evan. Thank you for asking. Noah’s fine. He just had a small scare the other day with false labor, so Bastian and Storm want him to stay in bed. They’re afraid the party will be too much excitement for him, and we’ll end up having a baby on the buffet table.” Jesse laughed.

“Now that would be a sight to s―”

Evan froze as his gaze landed on the most handsome man he had ever seen. He had to be at least six foot eight, with deep blue eyes and dark chestnut hair. It was cut short, making his rugged features more pronounced. He could detect small stress lines and laugh lines throughout the face that told Evan this man had lived a long life and knew things. There was wisdom in his eyes and his face. His lips looked so strong yet soft, and he was built like the rest of the enforcers around here, but that wasn’t all. The man was very familiar to him, like Evan had met him before but couldn’t remember.

Suddenly, the sexy god turned his attention in Evan’s direction, and everything went blank around him. His sole focus was on the gorgeous man before him. He could see the man’s lips moving but had no idea what he was saying. Then he moved closer to Evan and Evan couldn’t move. He wanted to step closer to the man, but at the same time he wanted to turn and run. He knew who this was. He knew he was looking at the face of his mate. As the man got closer, his scent hit Evan like walking into Bailey’s bakery. It smelled warm and inviting, like home. It washed over him, consuming him, and he just wanted to rub it all over his skin and bite it.
