“Okay.” His mother sighed, but Colin could tell she was pleased.

The four of them were standing by the security desk in the departures lounge at Heathrow.

“You sure you’re all right?” Colin asked his mother, still not one-hundred percent sure he should leave her.

“I’m fine.” She touched his cheek. “Sad that you’re going, but I know you’re making the right decision for you.”

  “But what about you?”

“Stop it. You heard what the doctor said.”

Colin nodded. The surgeon had been reassuring, telling them all that Avril’s operation had gone to plan and he didn’t foresee any complications.

“But if anything happens, you give us a ring and we’ll be on the next flight back.”

“Stop it,” she repeated. “Everything will be fine,” she soothed.

Colin nodded and let out a breath. He was overreacting. All the signs were positive that his mother would make a full recovery. They even let her out of hospital earlier than expected because she was doing so well.

“You should probably go through,” Harry said, nodding at the security barrier. He pulled Martin into a tight hug. “Thank you for making my son so happy.”

“Thank you for making Colin into the wonderful man that he is,” Martin said, returning Harry’s hug.

Colin cleared his throat, embarrassed at the praise being heaped on him.

“Come here, you.” Harry pulled Colin into a huge bear hug. “Don’t tell you enough, but I’m so proud of you.”

Colin blinked away tears. “Love you, Dad.”

  “Love you, too.”

Then Harry did something completely unexpected, he kissed Colin on the lips.

It hadn’t escaped Colin’s notice that there was no one from Martin’s family to see him off. Matt, Bruce, and Nance would be Martin’s new family.

“Just be happy. That’s all I ask,” Avril said, finally breaking down and allowing her tears to flow.

“We will,” both Colin and Martin said.

She held onto Colin and didn’t seem to want to let go.

Eventually Harry put a hand on his wife’s back and she let her son loose.

  “Well,” Colin sighed.

  “Yes.” Avril nodded.

“Come on, mate,” Colin said, hitching his carry-on bag onto his shoulder, grasping Martin’s hand, and leading his husband away to begin their new life.
