by McGregor, Tim

“There's something I need you to know. The wolf is gone, the nightmare is over. And Amy is safe.

“I know I shouldn't have brought her but she saved my life. She ended this whole awful mess that you and I walked into. She's a strong kid, John. Smart, too. And she's going to be just fine. You don't need to worry about her anymore. She's tough. Like her old man.”

A breeze floated in, ruffling her hair into her eyes. Again she waited for a sign that her words had been heard and again there was nothing. Was the breeze a signal from him? The call of an owl in the trees? There was no way to know but in the years to come when she thought back to this night, she would tell herself that he had been there and had heard every word. And that it had brought him some peace.

She looked up at the crescent moon above and then Lara Mendes rose and strode back though the cemetery towards the little houses of the village below. Tomorrow she would figure what to do with the rest of her life.
