I gasped. “There wasn’t that much money in the bag we found.”

“Probably not. Wilber hid most of it where nobody will ever find it.”

  “Which is where?”

“With me. He gave it to me to hold on to. I should have known something was going on when he started getting paranoid. He believed someone was stealing from him. I didn’t think much of it because Wilber had been known to get like that sometimes.”

“Except he wasn’t wrong this time,” I said. “Did you give the money to Angelo and Callie yet?”

“What, and stop them from digging up the crawl space to find it? Not on your life.” She cackled. “Teach them to treat me like they have. I’ll give them the money eventually.”

“So how is it going with your children now?”

“They’re trying, and so am I, but I don’t harbor any false expectations.”

“It takes time. How are you feeling?”

“Much better. And I’m back at home. Elsie didn’t much care that my cats camped out over her place.”

I smiled because the visual was too good.

I was sad that Wilber was gone and that Bernice would never know what might have been. It made me all the more thankful that I had my Andrew, who I hugged extra close after my ordeal.

“One thing I’m thankful for is that Wilber wasn’t a serial killer,” Bernice said. “It was hard thinking about him that way.”

“I believe the residents of Tawas think that way too. We don’t want to be remembered as the town where a serial killer once lived.”

I sipped my coffee and watched Rosa Lee’s warm face as she sat between her sons’ beds. She hadn’t left the hospital since they’d arrived and there was no amount of talking that would ever change that. I still had to smile when I thought about anyone considering them millionaires, but then there was always that moment when I thought ... well, what if?

  About the Author

USA Today Bestseller Madison Johns is most known for her Agnes Barton Senior sleuths mystery series featuring lively and zany senior citizen sleuths — Agnes Barton and Eleanor Mason. Her time working at a nursing home was all the inspiration she needed to portray realistic characters that readers have gone on to love. Her first book Armed and Outrageous has solidified her in the publishing world and her series has been well received.

Madison’s aim was simple; she wanted to change how the world viewed senior citizens. Why you could take a stroll through her neighborhood in Mid-Michigan where some of the liveliest seniors live to know she wasn’t that far off the mark.

She knew if she used what she had learned while caring for senior citizens to good use, it would result in something quite unique.

She now works full time as a writer from home where she continues to write cozy mysteries.
