Curse of Cain (Immortal Mercenary Book 2) Page 16

by Conner Kressley

I stood as Ralphie began the process of imprisoning the sisters once more. Huffing loudly, I considered turning back to Andy and letting him know just how wrong the sisters had been. Before I could do that though, I heard Garreth muttering on the ground. The words were sinister in nature; Latin death chants. Was he—was he killing himself?

“What are you doing?” I asked. “A spell won’t work in here. Not even a death spell.”

“I won’t need one,” he said and bit down on something hard in his mouth. Suddenly, his mouth filled with a white foam.

“Cyanide,” I muttered, dropping to my knees beside him. “Why the hell would you do that?”

“Because this is part of it, Father,” he said, still using the name I told him not to. “Because I can’t survive this, not if she’s going to get what she needs.”

“What does that mean?” I asked, looking at him.

“You know what it means, Father,” he said, his voice low, his body shutting down. “You understand the way of curses.”

“Oh God,” I shouted, standing over the now corpse of Garreth. “Amber,” I said, looking back at Andy with huge eyes. “He’s transmitting the Wisdom to Amber!”

Andy, Aria, and I rushed to the safe house, my foot pressed heavy against the accelerator.

Aria perhaps wasn’t too keen on this turn of events. Though she had been convinced to help me, she very likely would still rather be somewhere else.

I didn’t have the time to bring her home though, not when the most dangerous child in the world had perhaps just gotten infinitely more so.

“Maybe he was lying,” Andy said, as I pulled into the parking lot of the abandoned building I’d bought back in ’79 and outfitted with security features a few years ago for an occasion just like this.

“Maybe,” I said, though I didn’t really believe it.

I threw the car in park and kicked open the door. Andy was out right along with me, running toward the safe house. Aria was decidedly less swift.

I slammed against the door, typing in the code to unlock. I didn’t need to though. My heart thudding into my stomach, I realized the door was already unlocked. Someone had gotten in, or someone had gotten out.

“Goddamn it,” I growled, pushing through the door and running down the hall toward the main area.

“Merry!” I yelled, wondering what had happened. If the Wisdom had gone to Amber and she now knew what she was and what she was capable of, anything was possible. I could only hope I was fast enough to deal with it.

“Merry!” I repeated when it was clear I would get no answer the first time.

I flew into the main area, with Andy at my back.

With a start, I looked around the room. None of the people I’d expected were there. In fact, the only body I saw was that of Eric Woodman. He was as dead as disco, his eyes open and his throat slashed. Blood had spilled out onto the concrete floor, and his face was twisted into a mask of terror that would now be permanent.

“My God,” I said, running toward him. “Who did this?”

“I did,” a voice, so familiar that it sliced through me like the blade I had been carrying for days now, echoed from the other side of the room.

“Who the fuck are you?” Andy said, turning his gun onto the man.

I stood, turning slowly. My eyes watered instantly as I turned, sure I had misidentified the voice. But, as I took him in, I realized I hadn’t. it shouldn’t have come as a surprise. I would know that voice anywhere. But how? How was this man here, and how could—after keeping his appearances to myself for so long—could Andy see him now?

There, standing like something out of so many of my dreams, was my brother Abel.

“Abe?” I gasped, the breath catching in my throat as my head spun so quickly and furiously that I couldn’t believe I didn’t pass out.”

“Hello Brother,” he said. “I think we have a lot of catching up to do.”
