  Chapter 1

  Lance

I wasn't sure how to answer her question. Of course I was expecting someone different. For years that little piece of shit irritated me. He'd fuck with me when I was deep into trying to make my future happen. I couldn't stand him. Not for one second did I ever think that he could be a she. That was messed up, I knew it was. A girl could do anything just as good as a guy. I wasn't an asshole. I'd seen my sister play ball better than most men. If she could have been on the Pirates, she would have been, and she would have kicked half their asses. For a split second, I felt bad for judging Lauren, that was what he'd said her name was. Each time I'd pictured the person on the other side of that computer, it had been a little punk that was trying to prove something. That moment of feeling bad ended the moment the woman in front of me, the one I'd had the best damn sex with, opened her mouth again.

“Don't tell me you're afraid of a little competition,” she said, her words dripping with challenge.

The growl came from deep in my chest before I could stop it. What I wanted to do was walk around that table, lift her up, slam her into the wall behind her, and fuck her harder than I had just hours before. That woman definitely wasn't spanked enough as a child, and it shocked me thinking about just how badly I wanted to be the one to spank her. It wouldn't have been so bad filling her cocky mouth with my dick either. Stop it, I scolded myself in my mind. That wasn't like me. Never once had I thought like that before. She was still fucking with me, just in a different way. I was not going to let her win. I'd had a bit of fun, but it was time to get down to business. She was the competition. She was the one standing between me and my dreams.

“Are you afraid to get beat by a girl?” she asked in a normal tone as if she was asking about the weather.

“Do not sit there and act all sweet and innocent. Not one little bit of me is afraid of being beat by you. I'm damn good at what I do,” I answered with confidence. There was no way she needed to know she was affecting me.

“Are you sure about that?” she asked. “From what I've seen, you're just okay.”

“Okay,” I snapped, thinking about what exactly she was trying to say. “I'm more than okay. If you'd like, I can take you.”

“Okay,” the man that was still standing by the door interrupted before walking over and taking his seat. “I understand that the two of you are passionate about what you do. I also need you to remember where you are. This needs to be kept professional, while you're here anyway. There are so many people that would like to be sitting where the two of you are right now. What you do with this opportunity is up to you.”

  “Yes,” I said. “I'm sorry.”

  “I am too,” she said.

The man jumped right into talking about what he and his team expected of us. He was in the middle of talking when the guy next to me leaned over.

“That was some funny shit,” he whispered with a laugh. “If I didn't know better, I'd think you two.”

“Do you have something to say?” the man asked, interrupting the guy next to me.

“No,” was the response he got.

“You will both have identical files and papers in the envelopes I hand you before leaving,” the man continued. “We want to see if you can get through, how fast, and what you think we should do to fix it so you can't get through again. We want your input on making it stronger. We're going to look at what each of you come up with and compare the two. Maybe we'll even combine your ideas. We think it will help having two views instead of one. We are rolling this out one year from now and want it unbreakable. I want you to take the time you need to test every possible option. We will meet back here in three months to check on your progress. You should definitely have some kind of information by then.”

The man stood up and looked down the table at Lauren and then across at me.

“I'm looking forward to what you come up with. You two are the best at what you do,” he said with a smile on his face.

The entire time he'd been talking, I couldn't take my mind off of her, and it was driving me crazy. It was so damn distracting. If she felt the same way, I couldn't tell. She didn't seem shaken or uneasy in the slightest. Maybe we hadn't had the connection I'd thought, I told myself. It didn't matter anyway. We were enemies as far as I was concerned. I was pretty sure she felt the same way too.

“There is a car waiting to take the two of you to the airport,” the man spoke again.

He walked around the table toward the door. We both stood and walked to him. Then he handed each of us an envelope.

“I'll be here if you need anything,” he said. “All of my contact information is inside there.”

The other guys stood up and came over. They each shook our hand as they left the room. I noticed one guy grab Lauren's hand in both of his and linger for an extra moment. When she quickly pulled away like her hand was on fire, I felt a tiny bit of relief wash over me. I needed to get out of there and away from her as fast as possible, I thought to myself. The moment I got on the plane, I knew she'd be a thing of the past.

The man walked ahead of us to the elevator. We both stepped inside, and he reached in and pushed the button for the lobby just as he had before.

“Have a safe flight,” he said. “Don't hesitate to call or email if you need anything. I want this job done right.”

The doors closed and I felt like every bit of air had been sucked out that elevator. When I looked across the small space to see her bottom lip between her teeth as she moved from one foot to the other, my emotions were a mess. Part of me wanted to step forward and cover her mouth with mine, and another part of me wanted to tell her off for her shitty behavior in the meeting and for the last so many years. When a small smile spread slowly across her face, I was done.

  Chapter 2

  Lauren

It took all I had not to walk around the man in front of me to kick Locksmith's ass when he said “a woman” loud enough for me to hear him. Who did that little weasel think he was, I wondered? I'd been messing with his ass for years. It was fun. He made it easy. The punk would get so pissed off. It took me away from normal life for a minute, and I loved it. I'd actually thought he was a good guy, and I admired his skills, until that comment anyway.

I knew I should have held my tongue, but I couldn't do it. There was one thing I could not stand, and that was being judged. So many people had already judged me in my life. Even the stranger from the bar I'd fallen into bed with the night before had done it. I didn't need some punk hacker doing it too. Before you start judging me, know that I don't sleep around. Those days were over. I'd had my share of fun before, but I had responsibilities. Men weren't a part
of my present, and I didn't plan for them to be part of my future for a very long time.

There was something about that guy in the bar. He was gorgeous. I couldn't believe we were both wearing jeans and t-shirts in a room filled with suits and fancy dresses. His hair was dark and messy. It was as if he'd just run his hands through it, and I couldn't help but want mine there as well. His eyes were dark and so damn inviting. I felt like he could see right into my soul. He smelled amazing as well. I couldn't tell what it was he was wearing, but I couldn't get enough of it. It had been a very long time since I'd been with a man, years actually. I was under so much stress about the meeting that was coming, and he'd taken my mind off of it for a short time. When I touched him, I instantly felt something strong shoot through me, something I'd honestly never felt before. I had no idea what got into me. It was as if whatever was between us was stronger than I was. I needed to be with him. The last time I'd had a one-night stand had changed my life. I couldn't believe that I'd let it happen again, but he was so different than anyone I'd ever been with. The man knew what he wanted, and he took it. I happily gave it to him. When I closed my eyes, I felt more relaxed and happier than I had ever felt. When I opened them again, he was gone, and I was late.

“You're going down,” he snapped, pulling me back to the present.

My reply sounded like that of a small child, but I couldn't think of anything else quick enough.

When the man in front of me stepped aside, I couldn't believe it. The guy at the table was the very same guy that had his face buried between my legs the night before. The piece-of-shit that had just made such a judgmental comment was the sweet guy turned sexy fucker from the night before. His hair still had that messy, just ran his hands through it look. His eyes were so damn dark. I felt the weight of his stare on me and shivered. He was the reason I was such a mess. I couldn't stop thinking about him. He was also the reason I was late. Fuck that, I thought to myself. He was not getting me.

“Maybe you already did,” I said.

Then the punk said my hacker name. There was no way I was going to hear him judge that too. His name was ridiculous, Locksmith, really? We weren't breaking into houses. I could hear how mad he was when he spoke. I was getting to him. He always made it so easy. Something in me took over, and I could not stop my mouth from moving. I'd even questioned his skills, and by his response, he knew I was talking about how he used his cock. Believe me, there was nothing wrong with how he used it. He had great skills, but he didn't need to know I thought so.

The moment our little spat was interrupted, we were both reminded what exactly we were about to screw up and closed our mouths.

We made it through the rest of the meeting without another outburst. The moment the elevator doors closed and we were alone, that was over.

  Chapter 3

  Lance

“What the fuck was that?” I growled out.

“What?” she asked, as if she had no clue what I was talking about. That pissed me off even more.

“Don't give me what,” I said roughly with my finger pointed at her. “That little show you put on in there?”

“Show,” she said sternly, as she took a step toward me. “You're not the only one good at what you do, Locksmith. How was I supposed to react? You hadn't even talked to me. You knew nothing about me. The moment you heard my voice, you had to mention that I was a woman. Should I have bowed to you or something? I don't think so.”

“It wasn't like that,” I said.

“It was to me and every man in that room,” she replied.

“I was just shocked,” I said.

“Why?” she asked. “You don't think a girl can be as good as you?”

  “I didn't say that,” I snapped.

“You might as well have,” she answered. “I thought you were different, but I'm not so sure anymore.”

I don't know why her words had any affect on me, but they did. I felt like I'd just been kicked in the gut. She was the enemy. I shouldn't have cared, and that shit needed to stop.

The doors opened and she walked out ahead of me, but I quickly caught up with her.

“What is that supposed to mean?” I asked.

“Nothing,” she said. “It doesn't matter.”

She swung the door open and walked toward the waiting car. The driver opened the door, and Lauren got in. Before she had time to say or do anything, I got in next to her and pushed her ass across the seat. She let out a huff, and it took all I had not to laugh.

“This job is important to me,” I said, getting her off that subject as quickly as I could.

“And it's not to me?” she asked. “This job is going to make a huge difference in my life.”

“And it's not going to in mine?” I asked. “This job has been my dream since I was ten. I want a job in that building that I can walk into every single day. That is my end goal here.”

“Like you need it,” she said with a laugh.

“What the fuck does that mean?” I snapped, as my hand went up and ran through my hair.

It was taking all I had to keep my shit together. If she was talking about my dad, I wouldn't be able to hold it together any longer.

“Come on,” she said. “Like you need this job.”

“Who are you to tell me what I need?” I asked roughly.

“Don't think I don't pay attention,” she said. “I know damn well you sold to the military.”

“How the hell do you know that?” I asked.

“I'm good at what I do,” she said sarcastically. “Don't think all I do is fuck with you all day. I do other things too.”

“How do you possibly have the time,” I replied. “What's that about anyway?”

“Why are you so judgmental?” she asked without answering my question.

“I'm going to win this,” I said. “I get that you think you're skilled and all, but you don't have a chance. This is my life. It's what I do every waking moment.”

Her body tensed. I could see it. For a small moment, she'd let her guard down, but it didn't last long.

“I have a life, but I can still kick your ass in my spare time,” she said before looking out the window.

“Bring it on, Eagle. Show me what you've really got. I sure haven't seen it yet.”

  Chapter 4

  Lauren

The second the car stopped, I swung my door open and got out. That asshole made me so mad. When the driver got out, he shook his head, and I didn't miss the smirk playing on his face. He thought that shit was funny, and I did not. It was my life. I'd been dreaming about it for so long, and there was no way Locksmith or Lance, whatever his name was, was going to stand in my way. The punk grabbed his bag from the trunk before the driver was able to hand me mine, and he was gone.

When I walked through the airport doors, I couldn't wait to get home. My everything would be waiting for me, and I missed his face so much. He was the reason I was working my ass off. He deserved a better life. It was my fault that he didn't have it, and I knew I was going to do whatever it took to give it to him.

I checked in for my flight and made my way over to security to end up in line right behind Lance. He had his phone out and was typing away. His dark hair was hanging over his eyes, and I wanted so badly to push it back for him. The moment I thought about it, my body shivered. Bullshit, I thought to myself. That was never happening, and I needed to get those thoughts right out of my head.

“All that hurrying didn't get you very far, did it?” I asked from behind him.

  “Oh great,” he said.

“Don't worry,” I said. “You'll have three months away from me.”

“Somehow I doubt that,” he said with a laugh.

Neither of us said another word as we waited, not so patiently to get away from each other. I was so nervous. It was going to be my second flight, and I wasn't looking forward to it.

“Lance Smith,” I heard the security guy say when Lance handed him his ticket.

I couldn't hold back the huge
smile spreading across my face. When I let out a laugh, Lance looked back at me with the dirtiest look I'd seen him give me yet. My hand moved fast to cover my mouth, and he shook his head and walked away. I hurried to get through with my ticket. There was no way I wasn't going to say something. He was kicking his shoes off when I grabbed a bucket and walked up behind him.

“Your mom must really love baseball,” I said, trying my best to hold back my laughter.

I put the bucket on the belt thingy, threw my chucks in, and put my jacket over them. Then I threw my bag with my laptop next to it. He'd thrown his shoes in a bucket next to mine and put his bag on the other side.

“Not as much as you'd think,” he said.

The look on his face had me bursting into laughter. I couldn't explain it if I had to.

“Seriously,” I said with a smirk I couldn't get to go away. “She named you after a damn Pirate. That is so hilarious. I bet you got so much shit in school over that. I wish I could have seen it.”

“Screw you,” he snapped, as he stepped forward through the security machine.

I hurried through behind him still smiling.

“Come on,” I said. “You have to admit that's pretty funny. He's an old, retired guy now. She really didn't think that through. I guess he was still something when you were born, so I'll give her that.”

Lance grabbed his stuff, shoved his feet into his shoes, and walked away. I quickly grabbed my jacket, bag, and chucks, and ran in my socks behind him.

“Will you leave me the fuck alone?” he snapped, as she stopped and turned to face me. “You've made my life hell for years.”

“What?” I asked, my smile instantly left my face.

“Nothing,” he said. “I have to go.”

He turned back and kept walking. I felt bad when he made that comment. What did he mean made his life hell, I wondered? I began walking behind him. He stopped and turned back toward me again.
