Esera had found the feather in the place where she was now sitting, the day before her daughter had been born. At that time she'd had no idea where it had come from. Now, thanks to her latest dream, she knew it had been a present, meant for them both. And she knew who had sent them the gift.
They came just before dusk, hovering over the water some way out into the lake, as if they weren't sure whether to venture any closer. There had been a time, not so long ago, when Esera would have been terrified, but that time was gone now. Standing up carefully, she beckoned for them to come nearer. As the amorphous shapes drew in, making the evening even darker around her, Esera looked down at her baby, who was still contentedly preoccupied with the feather.
'There's someone here who wants to meet you, little one,' she murmured softly, then looked up to face the darkness, unafraid.
The otherworld beings waited patiently for their introduction, radiating a quiet sense of pleasure, and Esera felt honoured to share her happiness with them.
'This is Terrella,' she said.
By then the boy who was often in Esera's thoughts was far away, approaching the northern borderlands of
Macul. But he was no longer alone. Alyssa, in the form of a humble sparrow, was riding on his shoulder. The unknown road was about to turn again.
